Myron Mixons Basic Hickory Bbq Sauce
Myron Mixon is a celebrity in the BBQ world and a 4-time BBQ champion in his own right. Hes also a real showman when it come s to ruling the airwaves with top-rated series such as BBQ Rules and BBQ Pitmasters on the Discovery channel. He recently shared his winning BBQ sauce that is reportedly excellent for pork, beef, and lamb. Its a woodsy hickory flavor BBQ sauce that has hints of sweet and strong residual flavors.
But does his recipe really measure up? Even the top champions all borrow from each other from time to time. Heres what goes into his award-winning recipe.
- 2 cups ketchup
- 2 tablespoons garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons fresh-ground black pepper
- 2 tablespoons kosher salt
Place everything into a blender and then give the mix these ingredients by pulsing a few times. After that, you transfer this mixture to a medium pot and simmer on medium heat is mixed well. It doesnt need to boil but simmering is just fine. After a couple of minutes, allow the sauce to cool and then transfer to a clean jar. It can store up to 6 months in the fridge.
How good is this sauce?
What makes this sauce a bit of a mystery is that it mentions hickory, but the recipe doesnt have hickory added. It lends its flavor more to a very fine pasta sauce. Some Pitmasters have mentioned that its missing 2 tablespoons of Apple Jelly. Perhaps if you add liquid hickory flavor, it will give this BBQ sauce more definition.

Although There Are Several Distinctly Different Regional Styles Of Bbq Sauce In The Us The Thick Red Stuff Is What Most Of Us Reach For When Our Spouse Says Pick Up Some Barbecue Sauce Willya
If you are no longer living with your parents, you really should have a house sauce made without preservatives, additives, stabilizers, and emulsifiers, so that when your guests ask what brand of sauce is that? you can plunk a hand labeled bottle on the table. When they beg you for the recipe, you can then tell them Its a secret and mumble the old saw that ends in and then Id have to kill you.
Although the original KC sauces were probably vinegary, hot, and not sweet, similar to Arthur Bryants Original Barbeque Sauce , since the 1970s, the prototype has been KC Masterpiece tomato based, and sweet. The style has spread coast to coast and nowadays, when you say barbecue sauce, although there remain many regional and creative styles, most people think of the KC style.
The best have multiple sources of sweetness multiple sources of tartness multiple sources of heat and it gets layers of flavor from all the above as well as ketchup, Worcestershire, garlic, and salt. Most Kansas City sauces are brass bands with multiple layers of flavors, sweets, and heats. Because they are thick and tomatoey, they sit on top of the meat, not penetrating very far. For this reason you dont want to use too much. Just one or two layers, max. Let the meat shine through. Dont drown it in sauce.
Thats the idea behind my recipe. Its not KC Masterpiece, but it is a KC Classic.

A Sauce Of Some Substance
Mike was driving home to LA from a business trip to Kansas City. In Arizona he sees an elderly man walking on the side of the road. He stops and asks if he would like a ride.
With a silent nod of thanks, the elder got into the car.
Driving on, Mike tries in vain to make a bit of small talk with the man. The old man just sat silently, looking intently at everything he saw, studying every little detail, until he noticed a brown bag on the seat next to Mike.
What in bag? asked the old man.
Mike looked down at the brown bag and said, Its a bottle of barbecue sauce from Arthur Bryants. I got it for my wife.
The old timer was silent for another moment or two. Then speaking with quiet wisdom, he said:

Give Yourself A Leg Up On The Competition With This Recipe For Award Winning Smoked Pork Ribs
Do you make the best smoked ribs in your neighborhood? Thinking of entering your ribs in a barbecue competition?
The raw truth is that the smoked ribs your family and neighbors love at home may not necessarily work in competition. When I started competing with team Smoke In Da Eye in 2003, I was certain that my backyard rib recipe was good enough to hold its own among the barbecue circuits seasoned veterans. Suffice to say, it did not. In fact, my ribs came within spitting distance of dead a$$ last , as did the other three categories I entered.
I walked away vowing never again to compete. But the competition bug hit me hard, and I was back at it a month later. During that brief break, I turned to online BBQ forums and fellow competitors for advice on improving my rib score. Slowly but surely, my ribs began to move up the rankings, and a few contests later I got a top ten call.

Jack Daniel’s Rib Glaze
Whiskey-based barbecue sauces have a long history in the South. Our sweet tomato-based sauce gets that great whiskey flavor, and the sugar and spices tame that bite. Make the sauce a few days in advance for it to have time for the flavors to blend and for the whiskey to mellow.
The recipe starts with simmering a cup of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey and flavoring it with ketchup, brown sugar, vinegar, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, mustard, salt, and pepper. Remember that despite the cooking process, the sauce will retain about 40% of its alcohol, so serve the sauce on the side and offer an alternative to those who don’t wish to consume alcohol.
Keeps for 1 week in the fridge.
Walter Jetton’s Barbecue Sauce
Walter Jetton was President Johnson’s favorite caterer and pitmaster. Jetton prepared his barbecue, Texas-style of course, for some of the most important people of the 1960’s. This classic style barbecue sauce starts with a stock and is perfect for brisket giving it a barbecue flavor from long ago. It is interesting to point out that Texas-style barbecue sauces evolved from something we today would call gravy.

Asian Style Bbq Sauce
This recipe for bbq sauce has been around for decades, and we often call it Edmondson Secret Sauce. This barbecue recipe creates a sweet and salty sauce that is Asian in style. The original version of this recipe rose in popularity during the 1960s as Asian style cuisine fused with Californian flavors.
The Asian flavor comes from the soy sauce, the sweetness from the brown sugar and ketchup, and the spice is from the ginger. Optionally, a fruit preserve can be added for a fruity taste with more sugar. It’s very easy to make the sauce, and as long as you have all the ingredients on hand, you can make it in about 10 minutes. For those wanting a Sweet Asian BBQ sauce, this hits the mark.
