Testing Basil Storage Methods

Chicken with Spicy Mango Sauce | Take 5 | Savory by Stop & Shop

Armed with that information, I bought a few big bunches of basil, split them up, fetched my prayer beads, and organized six tests.

The first method I tried, which no one recommends, is placing the unwashed basil in the fridge in the plastic bag or clamshell it came in. This method is also known as “the lazy gal’s method aka what my boyfriend would do if I weren’t there to scold him harshly. Theres no strategy or logic to this method, so its no surprise that this doesnt work great, especially in the long-term .

The more popular way to store fresh herbs, including basil, is by following the flower bouquet method. Trim basil and place it in a jar with a bit of water so that the bottom of the stems are just touching the water. You dont want them to be completely submerged in water, because that will actually cause them to go bad more quickly. From here, I tried four different approaches: storing basil at room temperature, uncovered storing basil at room temperature with a loose plastic bag draped over the leaves storing basil at room temperature in a sealed quart container storing basil in the fridge in a loose bag.

Finally, the renegade of basil storage: storing the fresh leaves like salad greens. I picked, washed, and dried the leaves, then wrapped them in a dry paper towel, sealed the parcel in a plastic bag, and stored in the fridge

What Does Browning Sauce Taste Like

Basically, browning sauce is better known for its deep brown color than the flavor. But if you had to attribute a flavor to it, its caramel-like and smokey, a lot like molasses.

But depending on what variations you add to the sauce, the flavor can vary slightly.

Of course, if youre adding salt, it will have that sweet-salty oyster sauce-like taste.

If youre adding other seasoning or concentrates, the sauce will have a more complex taste making it more diverse and flavourful.

When Is Homemade Browning Sauce Used

Caribbean people add this is stewed meat, gravy and even extend it to baking the infamous black cake during the festive season.

Browning is essentially charred brown sugar, more noted for it’s strong hue rather than it’s nutritionally value.

Unlike the store brought kind, my recipe is completely unadulterated and free from additives and preservatives.

Please note that the flavour of the sauce is slightly smokey from charring the sugar. The longer you allow the sugar to burn the smokier the flavour and deeper the colour.

I decided to add some himalayan pink salt once liquidised to balance out that smokiness.

Add this one to your gravy, stews or whatever you need to enrich….go on I dare you!

It is made from caramelizing brown sugar, once the sugar is caramelized to the point of being almost dark in appearance hot water is added to make the sauce which yields a smoky flavour.

The store brought browning is more concentrated than the homemade version.

    Why Does Guacamole Turn Brown

Sweet n Spicy Miso Wings Garlic-Parmesan Wings Buffalo Wings 2.0 – Savory

Avocado flesh is green, but it darkens and eventually turns brown only when it reacts with the oxygen in the air. The process of oxidation is kept at bay when the avocado is surrounded by skin, but once you cut and peel your fresh avocado, the flesh will begin to oxidize. This isnt noticeable for several hours, but beyond that, you will notice the flesh of your avocado changing color. Because avocado is the primary ingredient in guacamole, your guacamole will also turn brown as the avocado in it begins to oxidize.

The answer to this question also varies based on who you ask.

In Caribbean islands such as the West Indies, browning sauce solely refers to burnt sugar.

On the other hand, products containing a vegetable base, molasses, spices, salts, and preservatives are also sold as browning and seasoning sauces, especially in Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Its important to emphasize that browning sauce and brown sauce are sometimes used interchangeably and can sometimes mean two different things.

Its hard to draw a line between the two as sugar or molasses are the main ingredients of any browning sauce or brown sauce. The two have the same dark brown color and usually a bitter-sweet or bland flavor.

Worcestershire sauce is a fermented liquid condiment made from molasses, sugar, salt, vinegar, anchovies , garlic, tamarind extract, chili pepper extract, and some undisclosed natural ingredients. Worcestershire sauce has a strong umami flavor.

Because of molasses presence, Worcestershire sauce can be used as a browning agent. However, the taste would be different from homemade browning sauce.

The Texture And Use Of The Homemade Version

The good news is that the homemade version of browning doesn’t contain any additives or preservatives resulting in a less concentrated version.

Plus you know exactly what goes into it since you have complete control over the ingredients.

The texture of the browning is thinner and not as bitter than its store brought counterpart.

As a result, you can be a bit more heavy handed if made correctly when using this version of the sauce and not have to worry about the finishing dish becoming too bitter.

I’ve updated the post with a few progress pictures so you have an idea of what to expect.
