This classic keto shrimp cocktail recipe can be made with shrimp or prawn, large or small. So I use the words prawn or shrimp interchangeably in this blog post to mean either. I have used frozen cooked prawns to make this one, as it makes it super quick and easy to make.

We always have some frozen cooked prawns in the freezer that we source at Aldi, and all the other ingredients we have in our pantry.

If you use frozen uncooked prawns, you will need to cook them before you use them of course. This will then take a bit longer to make.

But there are so many fun ways you can incorporate this delicious sauce in other ways as well. This cocktail sauce can be served with your favorite cooked shrimp or even with clams and lobster. It is the perfect complement to any type of cooked or grilled fish. You can also serve it as a dip for your favorite crab cakes or salmon cakes.

How To Make Shrimp Cocktail

  • Chop. Chop all pico de gallo ingredients into small cubes of uniform shape and size. I totally cheat and use a chopper to chop everything including the tomatoes. Just be sure to put the tomatoes skin side down and it will go through your onions, tomatoes, cucumber, jalapeno and yes, even the cilantro. I use this pull chopper or this push chopper and love them both!
  • Sauce. Mix all ingredients for the sauce.
  • Mix. Mix sauce with chopped vegetables and shrimp and let it sit on the counter to let the flavors marry. If longer than 30 minutes, let it sit in the refrigerator.
  • Serve. Serve and enjoy!

When buying shrimp there are many different varieties. To me its hard to beat gulf shrimp but Carolina also has some fantastic shellfish. When buying shrimp youll see different classifications of size like jumbo, large or medium. This can be very misleading, look for numbers like 21/25 or 16/20. This refers to the number of shrimp it takes to weight out to a pound. Always remember the bigger the number, the smaller the shrimp.

You may also see numbers like U-10 or U-15 on the shrimp packaging. This just means that its a specific number of shrimp per pound. I recommend 16/20 for shrimp cocktail because its not to big and not to small. If you want to really be fancy grab yourself some U-10 shrimp and your guests will be very impressed but your wallet not so much. 21/25 is as small as I would recommend for shrimp cocktail anything smaller than that I would only use for salads and stir fry.
