How To Make An Easy Marinade For Chicken Wings

Chicken Broccoli, & Bell Pepper, w/ Hoisin Sauce

The marinade for these chicken wings is made from hoisin sauce, soy sauce, ginger, garlic, brown sugar, rice wine and sriracha. Just a teaspoon of sriracha for some background heat, not too much to make them super spicy.

So half of the marinade is going to flavor the chicken wings before cooking and half is going to become the sauce to baste the wings with while they are in the oven.

For the best cooking results, place the chicken wings on a wire rack over a baking sheet.

When the wings are almost cooked through, they get basted with the marinade thats been heated up and thickened with cornstarch. Yep, you can use the marinade that the chicken was in, it just has to be brought to a boil for at least 5 minutes.

Making A Tasty Glaze From Meat Juices

Meat juices are unavoidable when roasting marinated meats in a baking tray. It is a actually a good thing because it keeps the meat moist and tender. Simply strain the juices and thicken it on the stove to make a tasty glaze. Then brush the glaze back onto the meat to finish the roasting for that perfect glisten and shine.

What Is Hoisin Sauce Made Of

So what is hoisin sauce anyway? Hoisin sauce tastes like an earthy, sweet-tart, savory Asian Barbecue Sauce and it is divine.

It is made with select spices, fermented soybeans, sweet potatoes, garlic, red chili peppers, susgar and vinegar. It is excellent for elevating weeknight meals and also makes a fabulous marinade.

    Delicious Chicken In Hoisin Sauce

Hoisin sauce is one of my favorite sauces in my kitchen pantry. When it comes to Chinese recipes, there are three sauces that are staples: soy sauce, oyster sauce and hoisin sauce.

While I love the savory notes of soy sauce and oyster sauce, Hoisin sauce brings a completely new flavor profile to a dish. Its savory, sweet and rich at the same time.

To sum up, a little bit of Hoisin sauce adds a lot of depth to the overall taste of any dish. I love it.

This baked hoisin chicken features the best sauce, making the chicken extremely juicy and savory while remaining tender as well. Most importantly, you have got to try it today at home!

Key Ingredients For Spicy Hoisin Chicken

It only takes a few ingredients to make this dish unforgettable. You are going to love this recipe!

Here is a bit more information about what I used.

    • Chicken: There are lots of ways that you can prepare chicken. For busy nights, just toss some shredded rotisserie chicken slices in the Hoisin sauce. Or, cut up and cook some boneless, skinless chicken breasts. You could also use chicken thighs or even pre-cooked frozen grilled chicken strips to make dinner even quicker.
    • Ginger: I added some fresh ginger to my sauce because I love how it really elevates the taste. However, this is optional. In fact, you can use dried ginger powder instead of fresh ginger in a pinch.
    • Hoisin Sauce: Use as much sauce as you need to cover the amount of chicken you prepare. You could make your own Hoisin sauce, but buying the jarred kind is such a time-saver.
    • Asian Chili Garlic Paste: Either chili garlic paste or Sriracha are fantastic to add to the sauce if you want it to have some heat. You can also completely omit this if you want to keep this dish on the sweeter side.

Where Can I Buy Hoisin Sauce

Hoisin sauce can be found in the Asian section of your local grocery stores. Please purchase only quality hoisin sauce like Lee Kum Kee or Kikkoman because not all hoisin sauce is created equal and you can taste the difference! If you think you dont like hoisin sauce, you probably di not stick with a quality brand.

How To Cook Hoisin Chicken On The Grill

To start, remove the skin from each piece of chicken and season with salt and pepper.

Grill over medium heat until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees, approximately 30-40 minutes. Youll only want to flip the chicken once.

In a small bowl, mix together hoisin sauce, barbeque sauce, garlic and ginger powder.

When you remove the chicken from the grill, brush the marinade all over and then garnish with chopped green onion.

I dont suggest adding the marinade before grilling because of the sugar content.

What Goes Into This Hoisin Sauce Baked Chicken

All you need to do is gather some everyday pantry ingredients to marinate the drumsticks. Most of the time I preheat the oven once the chicken starts to marinate, and by the time the oven reaches its desired temperature, the chicken is more than ready to be baked.

For the fresh ingredients, you will need:

    • 8-10 pieces of chicken drumsticks
    • 1 12 teaspoon lime juice

The lovely hoisin sauce is made from common pantry ingredients:

    • 4 tablespoon hoisin sauce
    • 12 – 1 tablespoon chili powder
    • 12 teaspoon ginger powder
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 14 teaspoon pepper
    • 1 tablespoon oil

If you dont have kecap manis, you can substitute with 1 tablespoon regular soy sauce + 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar.

Can You Make These Chicken Wings Ahead Of Time

Well, no one in my house is going to refuse a leftover chicken wing, I can tell you that.

But these Sticky Hoisin Chicken Wings are best when they are first made so if youre making them for company you will want to do that. What you can do though is marinate the wings and bake them, then let them cool.

Right before dinner or appetizers are needed, pop the wings back into the over to warm them back up and baste with the sauce.

We like to top these wings with sesame seeds and chopped chives or scallions and serve with any extra sauce on the side for dipping, or you can use Ranch or Blue Cheese dressing!

OR eat them straight up like I do. Just the delicious, tender, sticky chicken wings for me. No sauce on the side needed.
