How To Make Ghost Pepper Hot Sauce

Dave’s Gourmet Ghost Pepper Hot Sauce Review | Bhut Jolokia

In a nutshell, your cooking steps include: Chopping, Cooking, Simmering, Processing, Bottling. Done! Easy!

The unfortunate part of this recipe is that it is best to wait a few days or even longer to let the flavors mingle and mellow slightly in the bottle. Of course you can eat it right away, but I like the flavor that much more after waiting.

So have a little patience, will ya?

The flavor is spicy for sure, but somewhat fruity from the ghosts and savory with the tomatoes. This is one of my very favorites.

The Decade Of The Chile Pepper

Love hot sauce? You probably have the 90s to thankfor a bunch of surprising reasons.

ByJonathan Kauffman

In the early 1990s, an aspiring California chile farmer named Frank Garcia claimed to discover a mutant red pepper growing in his fields. He dubbed it the Red Savina and sent it off to a lab to see just how spicy it was. The number that came back floored him: 575,000 . Exponentially hotter than your average , it even outscored the worlds hottest pepper at the time, the habanero, which tops out at 350,000 units. The Guinness Book of World Records declared the Red Savina the world’s hottest pepper in 1994.

The Red Savina wasn’t a sui generis event. It was just one of a number of mileposts in the great Scoville escalation race of the 1990s, the decade when America went nuts for spicy foodand spicy food, in turn, got hotter and hotter. It was the heyday of Chile Pepper magazine, a time when chileheads began testing their limits at jalapeño-eating contests and boutique hot sauces were all the rage. By the 1990s, to be a chilehead wasnt just a culinary preference. It was a lifestyle. A badge of pride. Occasionally, a test of ones gustatory mettle.

Can You Die From Eating Ghost Peppers

Daves Gourmet Ghost Pepper Hot Sauce

It is possible to overdose on capsaicin, the chemical that makes chili peppers hot. However, the only way you can die from eating ghost peppers is if you eat them in sufficient quantity. A study performed in 1980 calculated that it would take consuming 3 pounds of superhot pepper powder, like ghost pepper powder, to kill a person weighing 150 pounds. It is highly unlikely anyone could consume that amount, as their body would react before reaching such a limit.

Ghost pepper hot sauce coming at you, baby! You GOTTA have some ghost pepper sauce in the fridge for times when you need that extra bit of heat. Our ghost pepper plants weren’t quite as productive as our 7-pot plants this year, but we still got plenty of pods for whipping up some hot sauce.

Hot sauces are one of my favorite foods to make. I’ve become a bit fanatical about it, really. I’ve come to need a big variety on hand for all the different types of meals I make. You can tell by the growing collection of Hot Sauce Recipes on the web site.

I’ve been moving into making flavors and combinations of all different sorts, but we’re keeping it super simple with this sauce. Sometimes simple is best.

With only 7 ingredients, you can make this sauce in about a half an hour, not including chopping time. Most of the time is spent watching the ingredients simmer to cook down a bit and let the flavors meld.

How Is Heat Determined

There are more sauces that have a heat level below 50,000 SHU for a few reasons 1) Hot peppers lower in heat level are easier and less expensive to obtain, 2) Hot sauces lower in heat can reach more consumers 3) Consuming hot sauce that is hotter than the next has become a phenomenon for many consumers and it has forced manufacturers to produce sauces that challenge even the most tolerant palate.

How To Make Ghost Pepper Wings

Tasting Dave’s Ghost Pepper Insane Level Sauce

Ghost pepper wings are very easy to make and do not require any special equipment.

First, split the chicken wings at the joint, wash, and pat dry. The dryer they are, the crispier they will be. Lightly dust on a little salt on the chicken and rub it in.

I like to fry my chicken wings, although you can bake them instead. Frying gets in some more healthy fats and makes me feel fuller quicker.

You can use a deep fryer or a regular pan. If using a regular pan, youll have to flip the chicken wings halfway to ensure it is evenly fried.

This splash guard is a lifesaver if you are using a regular pan. It really prevents splashes and burns. Fry the chicken wings until they are cooked through and crispy.

When the wings are almost ready, start preparing the sauce. In a separate pan, melt the butter on low heat and add the coconut aminos.

Add in all the spices – ghost pepper, smoked paprika, thyme, salt, black pepper, and lemon pepper and stir.

Take out the fried chicken wings and place them in a bowl. Pour in the pepper sauce and stir till the spices are well mixed in.

Let it cool for a few minutes so the sauce really sinks in. Your spicy hot wings are ready to eat!

How Long Will This Hot Sauce Keep

Dave’s Gourmet Ghost Pepper Hot Sauce Review

It should keep a few months easily in the fridge, or even longer. It’s all about the acidity. To be technical, target level ph for shelf stable foods is below 4.6 ph, but should probably be lower for home cooks, around 4.0 or so, to account for errors. I have not measured the ph of this sauce, but I won’t have it around very long anyway. If you’re concerned, add more vinegar to lower the ph.

The best ph meters that I recommend are from Thermoworks. Get yourself a ph meter from Thermoworks today. I am a happy affiliate.
