Does Making Homemade Cocktail Sauce Rather Than Store

I 100% believe that making shrimp cocktail sauce at home results in the most flavorful and fresh tasting sauce. There is no comparison. Store bought cocktail sauce also has more preservatives to keep on room temperature shelves for longer. Whereas the homemade version will keep in the fridge and taste fresh for a good amount of time.

    Easy Cocktail Sauce From Scratch

I have been enjoying shrimp cocktail for as long as Ive been alive it seems. It was always the first thing on the list for any family party, and my dad was usually the first one to break into the platter. While my mom would usually buy the pre-cooked shrimp at the butcher, she always used her own cocktail sauce recipe and it was always amazing.

When I asked my new husband to pick up some shrimp from the grocery store for this recipe, he came home with the 2 pounds of shrimp Id asked for, and a bottle of cocktail sauce. When I asked him what in the world he was thinking buying a bottle, he simply stated that he was excited for the shrimp cocktail I was going to make. I shook my head and said, No, no my dear. We make this stuff from scratch!

He was skeptical that there would be a difference, but I made a believer of him in a matter of minutes. The fresh pop of flavors in this homemade cocktail sauce cannot be denied, plus its so easy youll never buy bottled again!

What Type Of Shrimp Is Best

Shrimp are sold in all varieties at the grocery store . We recommend buying large, tail-on shrimp for shrimp cocktail.

When you place cocktail sauce on a large platter and surround it by shrimp, the large shrimp fill the space nicely, look beautiful, and they are easiest for your guests to grab and eat. The shell makes the shrimp particularly flavorful and easier to grab and eat. Youll notice nice restaurant serves shrimp this way.

Two Ways To Make Shrimp Cocktail

When it comes to making this appetizer, there are two methods that both work great. The traditional option is quickly poaching the shrimp in water infused with some herbs, spices, and lemon juice. The other option is roasting the shrimp, per Ina Garten’s famous recipe. My personal favorite – roasting. I find it adds some extra flavor and the shrimp always comes out perfect every time.

    • Poaching: Fill a large pot with water and add 1 halved lemon, 1/4 onion, 1-2 garlic cloves, 1-2 bay leaves, and some peppercorns. You can also add some Old Bay, parsley, or any other seasonings you like. Bring to a rapid boil and add the shrimp. Cook for 2-3 minutes until pink and opaque. Immediately remove and add to an ice bath to stop the cooking.
    • Roasting: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Toss the shrimp with olive oil, salt, pepper, and any seasonings you like. Place in a single layer on a baking sheet and roast for 8-10 minutes until pink and opaque.

    What Is Cocktail Sauce

Cocktail sauce is a condiment that is often served with seafood. It is most commonly seen served with shrimp cocktail or raw oysters on the half shell, but it serves as a common dipping sauce for other seafood, too.

The sauces creation is often credited to chef, writer, and restaurant critic Franny Cradock as well as to the British chain restaurant Berni Inns. Theres also a legend that the sauce was born as a result of a miners mix of some of the ingredients to go with his oysters during his after-work drink at a San Francisco bar.

No matter who created it, the bottom line is that its the perfect sauce to use with your seafood.

Can You freeze homemade cocktail sauce?

Yup. Freeze cocktail sauce in an airtight container like a freezer safe ziploc bag for a couple of months and write the date on it.

How long does homemade cocktail sauce last in the fridge?

1-2 weeks. Cocktail sauce is basically refrigerator condiments mixed together. It will last a couple weeks if you didn’t double dip and used a very clean container to store it in. Use your nose to smell and your eyes to look for mold after a week or two.

What can I substitute for horseradish sauce in cocktail sauce in a pinch?

Man, there’s nothing like good horseradish sauce. Having said that, I have used minced ginger, spicy mustard, and wasabi in a pinch.

What To Serve With Cocktail Sauce

Cocktail sauce is typically served as a dipping condiment for classic shrimp cocktail, as you see in the photos. I like to use extra large 26-30 count shrimp or larger, for the most succulent bites.

But I also beg you to try this sauce with my grilled shrimp cocktail and air fryer shrimp. Or serve it with other seafood, like clams, oysters, lobster, and crab. And for those who like a creamy, tangy dip, be sure to offer some delicious tartar sauce!

Im a firm believer that seafood is meant to be served with fresh lemon wedges. So I always offer fresh lemon to squeeze over the shrimp before dipping. Its fresh and bright, and really enhances the flavors in both the seafood and the sauce.

You can also mix the seafood sauce with cream cheese and enjoy it as a dip on crackers and chips, or even use it as a topping for burgers, seafood sandwiches, and more.
