Where Does It Come From

Cocktail sauce was invented by famed British chef and TV personality, Fanny Cradock, and originally made to serve with a prawn cocktail. The name, therefore, was the sauce of the cocktail.

And what we know today as the famous Shrimp Cocktail, deemed the ultimate of fancy appetizers and hor dourves. I think I might go back to referring to it as a Prawn Cocktail. It sounds so much more sophisticated.

    Fresh Or Frozen Shrimp

The shrimp served with your cocktail sauce will be served cold, but thawed and with the tail-on. However, you can purchase fresh or frozen shrimp and pre-cooked or un-cooked shrimp depending on your budget, preference, and location.

If you live in an area where you can purchase fresh shrimp, obviously that would be the preferred option

For most of us, we have the choice of frozen shrimp from the freezer section or fresh shrimp from the seafood counter. The truth is, even at the seafood counter, the shrimp is not fresh. It was likely shipped to the store in frozen form and thawed for the display. So it really just depends on whether you want the convenience of thaw shrimp versus frozen shrimp.

Please note: if you buy cooked shrimp from the seafood counter, smell it before purchasing. It shouldnt have much of an odor, or may smell slightly salty. If it has a strong fishy odor it is most likely past its prime.

To thaw frozen shrimp, place the bag in the refrigerator overnight or pour the shrimp into a bowl and cover it with ice cold water for about an hour. Drain the shrimp and use paper towels to soak up the water.

Shrimp cocktail sauce is easier than you think. Once you try homemade, you wont want the store-bought sauce again! Its really just a matter of combining ingredients: ketchup, a mild chili sauce, prepared horseradish , fresh lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, and a dash of your favorite hot sauce.

Is it Spicy? Add the horseradish sauce and hot sauce to taste depending on how much of a spicy kick you like. Just keep in mind the sauce does mellow out after refrigeration so I always make it slightly spicier than I think I need.

Tips And Tricks For Making The Best Homemade Cocktail Sauce

    • If you want to cut down on sugar content, try making your own ketchup to use. Alternatively, you can look out for ketchup that doesnt contain high fructose corn syrup.
    • This sauce will keep for a week in the fridge so I often make a batch of it at once, but it all depends on how much you think youll use up.
    • If your sauce gets a little too spicy for your liking, you can add some extra ketchup to take a bit of tanginess out of the horseradish.
    • As well as serving it with shrimp cocktail, this sauce also works great as a light dip for a crudites platter!
    • Its important to let the mixture sit a while before serving to let the flavours come together. Otherwise, its just going to taste like super spicy ketchup!

Tips For Making This Cocktail Sauce Recipe:

If you want to make this recipe a little cleaner try buying a ketchup with no high fructose corn syrup. If you really want to control your sugar content, which is one of the benefits to making your own condiments, you could even try making your own ketchup.

Then, refrigerate until ready to serve. I like to make a big batch of cocktail sauce around the holidays and keep it in the fridge, just in case. It should last in the fridge for at least a week, but always use your best judgement before serving.

Customize your cocktail sauce. For our family, we always make two bowls of cocktail sauce. One spicy bowl with extra horseradish and one thats on the milder side. I like mine loaded with horseradish, but, again, do what makes your tastebuds happy.

    • If youre entertaining, you can easily make this cocktail sauce ahead of time.
    • Use a fork to stir when making your cocktail sauce. It acts similar to a whisk, but is much easier to clean.
    • If you add too much horseradish, just add a bit more ketchup to bring it back to your desired level of spiciness.

Shrimp cocktail is a party appetizer I both love and loathe. When I think of shrimp cocktail, the words that normally come to mind are tired, clich├ęd, and uninspired. Then again, whenever shrimp cocktail is served at a party, youll find me greedily hovering over the hors d’oeuvres table, repeating a motion I like to call the dunk and eat. A few minutes later, the only thing left on the plate is a pile of cleaned shrimp tails.

How Much Money Are You Saving

Prepared cocktail sauces range in price from $5 to $15 for a 12-ounce bottle. Some of those cheaper options will need a little help in the flavoring department, so you may find yourself adding an ingredient or two anyway. But how much money are you really saving by making your own cocktail sauce?

    • A cheap 24-ounce bottle of ketchup can be picked up for about $2. At that price, 1 cup costs about $.67.
    • A 6-ounce jar of decent horseradish can be found for around $3. Two tablespoons of that would cost about $.50.
    • The average lemon yields about 3 tablespoons of juice, which is a little more than what is needed. Let’s assume you found lemons at the market for $.65 each.

In this scenario, 1 cup of homemade cocktail sauce costs $1.82. There’s proof that five minutes of your time can save you at least $3 while reducing the clutter in your fridge.
