Not exactly. Hot Sauce is a vinegar base and hot pepper mix. Its pretty pure, which is why its so spicy. Buffalo Sauce mixes hot sauce with butter . So while there is hot sauce in buffalo sauce, the latter isnt as pure. Some buffalo wing sauce will still be very hot, but you can dilute your sauce to make it more mild or sweet.

Whats In Buffalo Sauce
Buffalo wing sauce can be made with a simple combination of just two ingredients: hot sauce and butter. The only hot sauce I recommend for homemade buffalo sauce is Franks RedHot Original Cayenne Hot Sauce.
Usually made with a ratio of 2 parts hot sauce to 1 part butter, some recipes are made with additional ingredients including garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, white vinegar, cayenne pepper, and paprika.
For a sweeter wing sauce, try adding a little honey or maple syrup.

Tips For The Best French Fries
The fries can really make or break this recipe. And no one likes soggy fries. Here are my tips for the best french fries:
- cut in uniform pieces cutting your potatoes in uniform shape and size will help ensure an even cooking time. We dont want some fries undercooked and others burnt. It doesnt have to be perfect, but try to get them the same thickness.
- dont overcrowd when cooking try to spread them out evenly and leave some room for airflow. If they are too close, they wont be as crispy.
- cooking at high temperatures high temperatures are what help them get crispy and brown on the outside. I like cooking mine at 450 degrees in the oven.
- flip a little after halfway through you want to make sure you shake/flip them halfway around through to ensure all sides are cooking evenly and getting even airflow.
Buffalo Wing Sauce Recipe Notes
- To use the sauce, place your fried or baked chicken wings in a bowl. Pour the sauce over them, then use tongs or gently shake the bowl to coat the chicken.
- Refrigerate the buffalo sauce in a glass jar or other covered container, and use it up within a few weeks. Id like to say it will keep for months, but its never around that long when I make it.
NOTE: Hot sauce can stain clothing and plastic containers. So, if you dont have a glass jar, its best to store the wing sauce in a container that you dont mind turning a little orange in color.
- Feel free to double or triple the recipe. The recipe as written below yields just over a cup of sauce. That should be plenty to coat a batch of wings for 8 people, but I like to make extra so people can use it as a dipping sauce.
By the way, another great way to prepare chicken wings for a crowd is on a smoker. Everyone loves these honey garlic smoked chicken wings. Oh, and have you ever tried them with a pickle brine? Dill pickle chicken wings are SO good!

Can I Freeze These
Yes, buffalo chicken wings can be frozen for up to 3 months. First, freeze them on a parchment-lined baking sheet, making sure that none of them are touching. Once theyre frozen solid, transfer them to a heavy-duty storage bag and freeze them. Thaw out frozen wings in the fridge overnight before reheating them.
Homemade Buffalo Sauce Ingredients
Hot Sauce: In order to make the buffalo sauce, you need the perfect Hot Sauce to start a solid base.
Butter: Grab 1 stick of butter do NOT substitute with margarine, it is not the same. When using butter for this recipe, you also want to make sure your butter is hot. If it is not hot, it will not mix together well.
Honey:Honey helps the sauce get thick and sticky perfectly to your wings.
Brown Sugar:Brown Sugar does the opposite of what you may think. It does not make your sauce sweet, instead, it balances some of the acidity.

Buffalo Sauce is a spicy sauce that’s made from a combination of hot sauce, butter, and other ingredients. It’s traditionally tossed with deep-fried chicken wings, but there are tons of other ways to use it, too.
Those popular wings were created in 1964 at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York. The story goes that bar owner Teressa Bellissimo cooked up a batch of spicy wings for her son and his friends late one night. Her son enjoyed them so much, that she served them in her bar the next day.
Today, you can find those saucy wings in pretty much any U.S. sports bar, and they’re a staple at home on game day, too.

What Is Buffalo Wing Sauce Made Of
Buffalo sauce is all about balanced flavors! The main ingredient is, of course, Franks Red Hot Original sauce . Its an aged cayenne pepper-based hot sauce that already includes vinegar and garlic powder, so its hot but also acidic.
To balance the acidity, I like to add some type of sweetener , but brown sugar or maple syrup can also be used.
Butter is added for richness, smoothness, and balancing the flavors. Its an essential ingredient to make a delicious buffalo wing sauce.
Seasoning with salt and pepper is totally optional but adds some flavor.
TIP: If you like your sauce really hot, do not add more hot sauce, instead, add half a teaspoon of cayenne powder. Adding more hot sauce will result in a very tangy sauce that is not very pleasant .
Other optional ingredients that you can add: a teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce, ½ teaspoon of paprika, ½ teaspoon of garlic powder, and ½ teaspoon of onion powder.

Youre going to be amazed at how easy this is. Really, Im almost embarrassed to write it out. But never fear, its happening, its getting posted. The world needs it. You need it. Here we go:
First, melt the butter in a saucepan over low heat. The low heat is important here because we dont want the butter to bubble or turn to brown butter. We want it to arrive at the just melted point. Once its there, remove the saucepan from the heat and let cool slightly really just a minute or two works.
Then, whisk in the hot sauce, garlic powder, and soy sauceuntil completely combined.
If your hot sauce is cold, be sure to bring it to room temperature or warm it as well. If it is cold, it will harden the butter.
THATS IT. I really meant easy, and in less than 5 minutes your sauce is ready!
Better Than Store Bought
Sure, you can purchase Buffalo sauce from the store, pre-made, but this is fresher and tastier and DANG if it isnt CRAZY good. I was lucky enough to visit the original Anchor Bar in New York, and this is the real deal sauce.
Of course I personally like to REALLY spice mine up with ghost powder, but you really dont have to. Thats a bit crazy, and I dont always use it, but sometimes I want REALLY SPICY.
Sometimes I just want it awesome like it is on its own, as you will see below. Ghost pepper flakes = optional.
Im serious! Only if you like it REALLY spicy.
Whats To Love About This Recipe
- Its super simple! Combing the ingredients is all there is to it! It takes less than five minutes to prepare, requires just eight ingredients and very few kitchen items, and no special tools. If that doesnt convince you to make it rather than purchasing the less than desirable store bought stuff, I dont know what will.
- Its made with fresh unprocessed ingredients and no added sugar! One of the things that really irks me about bottled dressings is that nearly all of them contain sugar and often times lots of it. Why!?! Making it yourself means you can leave out the unnecessary added sugar and use fresh unprocessed ingredients. It not only tastes better this way but is much healthier.
- There are so many uses for it! As I mentioned above, here in the Midwest we put ranch on everything. If I could get away with it, Id probably just drink it. You can use it as a dip, as a dressing, and incorporate it into casseroles, among other things.
