Ragu depending on where you are in the world is a meat-based sauce usually consisting of finely chopped vegetables, ground meat and cooked in a liquid such as wine, tomatoes or stock.

There are hundreds of different types of ragu all containing different meats or vegetables like our Venetian Duck Ragu and our Sausage Ragu which is super easy!

Bolognese on the other hand actually means something originating from Bologna, Emilia Romagna and their classic ragu alla bolognese has been a little lost in translation over the years.

It’s very similar to this one although is often made with white wine and sometimes milk which is thought to tenderise the meat.

It’s also traditionally served with tagliatelle pasta and never spaghetti which is why you’ll hear Italians say that Spaghetti Bolognese doesn’t exist.

So Whats The Difference Between Ragu And Bolognese Sauce

I wondered this myself when trying to figure out what to call this recipe other than Sauce. In my house we just know what Sauce is because there is no other sauce we care about.

Both sauces are made with meat but the difference between the difference is really in the ratio of meat to tomatoes and sometimes the meat used itself. Ragu can also be made with more vegetables than what I have used in this recipe. Many people like to add finely chopped celery, carrots and or mushrooms. I do not. If you would like to do this cut back on the meat a tiny bit and sweat the added vegetables till soft along with the onions and garlic.

Bolognese sauce also typically does not use beef and pork but instead uses chicken, veal, lamb, rabbit or even goose. Oh my! Check out this article to find out more.

How To Make Homestyle Spaghetti

Place large pot of salted water over high heat and heat until a rolling boil. Add your favorite spaghetti. Cook per package instructions or until al dente. Strain noodles and set aside. Add avocado oil to saute pan over medium-high heat. Add onions and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add in ground beef. Season with salt and pepper. Saute until browned, about 8 minutes. Add your favorite jar of marinara sauce. Saute until heated through.

    SO YUM! A comforting meat sauce with al dente spaghetti is something I have always loved.

    Contrary to what I grew up knowing, an authentic Italian meat sauce is the true meaning of Ragu and not just the pasta sauce company. I am definitely thankful for some amazing neighbors who knew real Italian food and shared their ways with me growing up, because this is a go-to in our home.

    Have Some Ragu Pasta Sauce On

    When I was a little girl, my mom would take me food shopping since I was the oldest child. We would go up and down the isles and I would be the one to get the groceries off the shelves and carefully place them in the carts. My parents were not rich so we ate a lot of pasta, and basic meals that would stretch out for our family of 7. I do have such fond memories of putting the Ragu and Prince Pasta in the cart each week. I always wondered why my mom would always buy the same brands every week, but as I grew older I started to learn why.

    Ragu was a brand she trusted and one her mother had used. It was a staple of her childhood, and also mine. I can still smell the hamburger being fried up as she made her meat sauce. She would always let me have a piece of spaghetti while I watched. Now, my kids are watching me use Ragu to make new dishes that are much more different than the spaghetti my mom once made.

    Recently, I took the time to read about the story behind Ragu. I was fascinated to learn that Ragu was made by an Italian immigrant named Assunta Cantisano. She migrated to New York with her Italian family, and soon thereafter started selling her homemade sauce to support her family during The Great Depression. Ragu has been in business since 1937 which says something about the quality of their Californian tomatoes, and recipe.

    Slow Cooked Beef Ragu

    This Italian ragu is slow-cooked because it needs time to develop all the incredible flavours BUT it’s not as time-consuming as you may think.

    Because this classic beef ragu recipe is made with ground beef and pork it doesn’t need as much time as a big chunk of meat would to break down and tenderise.

    This ragu needs a minimum of 2.5 hours cooking time so you can easily make it only a few hours before serving it.

    That being said the longer it has to simmer the better the flavour will be, just remember that you’ll need to keep topping up with water or stock to stop it reducing too much.

    Dressing Pasta In Rag Bolognese

    Cook pasta in some well-salted water , then drain it, reserving some of the starchy liquid. Return it to the pot, add most of your sauce, thin it out with the pasta-cooking liquid, and cook at a hard simmer for about 30 seconds, until the sauce gets a nice pasta-coating texture.

    Il Soffritto is very simply, finely chopped carrot, celery and white onion sauteed slowly with a little olive oil for about 10 minutes until soft but not browned.

    How To Make Ragu With Ground Chicken In 30 Minutes

    In our recipe below, we call for ground chicken. Keep in mind that ground turkey, beef, pork or fresh sausage will all work nicely in the recipe.

    To make the sauce, cook onions, carrots, and celery until softened and sweet stir in rosemary and garlic. When the vegetables are fragrant, add the ground chicken and cook until browned.

    Pour in some red wine If you dont have a bottle open on hand, scratch it and use chicken or turkey stock instead. Then add . Cook the sauce for about 10 minutes and serve over pasta.

    1 ½ pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into strips
    1 jar Ragu® Classic Alfredo Sauce
    1 package frozen broccoli florets, thawed
    1 package fettuccine, cooked


    • Melt Spread in large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat and cook chicken, in batches if necessary, stirring occasionally, until chicken is thoroughly cooked. Remove chicken and set aside.
    • Stir Sauce and broccoli into same skillet. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer covered, stirring occasionally, until broccoli is heated through, about 5 minutes. Stir in chicken and cook, stirring occasionally, until heated through, about 2 minutes. Serve over hot fettuccine and sprinkle, if desired, with grated Parmesan cheese.

    Home Canned Spaghetti Sauce For People Who Like Ragu

    In my role as a guest Expert Council member on The Survival Podcast, I received the following question from Matthew:

    Can you please recommend a recipe for homemade spaghetti sauce without oregano? I love to grow tomatoes and I love homemade spaghetti sauce. My problem is my wife is very picky about spaghetti sauce. She will only eat Ragu from the store.

    My wife absolutely despises oregano and really doesnt like basil. So therein lies my dilemma. If you could please give me a recipe that omits oregano and is low on the basil Id appreciate it because I havent found one in the past 5 years.

    Okay, although I am personally not a fan of commercial sauces like Ragu compared to homemade pasta sauces, I do love a challenge! So I was happy to take a stab at developing a homemade pasta sauce that would appeal to folks who prefer that commercial sauce flavor.

    Mixing The Pasta And Sauce

  • 1Figure out how much Alfredo sauce to use. Youll need the same number of sauce servings as pasta servings. For example, if you made enough pasta for two people, heat enough sauce for two people. Check the nutrition label on the sauce jar to find out how much sauce is in one serving it should be about 1/4 to 1/2 cup per person.
  • 2Pour the sauce into a medium pan or pot. The pot you use needs to be large enough to fit both the Alfredo sauce and the pasta, so choose accordingly.
  • 3Heat the sauce over medium heat. Place the pan on a burner, turn the burner to medium, and let the sauce begin to heat. Stir it occasionally using a spatula or spoon to keep it from scorching on the bottom. It should take about five minutes to heat. Taste the sauce to see if its hot before going to the next step.
  • 4Add the pasta to the sauce. Lift the pasta from the pasta pot to the Alfredo pan to mix them together. You can use tongs or a pronged pasta spoon to do the job. Keep going until all of the pasta has been moved from the pot to the pan with the sauce.
  • 5Stir it together and cook for three more minutes. This will give the pasta and the sauce time to combine and take on a nice texture. After three minutes are up, remove the pan from heat. Advertisement
