This homemade lasagna with meat sauce requires simple, easy to find ingredients that you should be able to purchase at any grocery store.

First up, let’s talk meat. I am completely omnivorous, so I use a mix of ground beef and sweet Italian sausage.

For the ground beef, I prefer a leaner mix of 90/10, but 85/15 or 80/20 will also work. You may need to skim off a bit of excess fat if you choose to use a higher fat mix.

For the Italian sausage, you can either purchase it as a ground meat mix, or purchase links that you remove the casings from.

How To Make Homemade Lasagna

  • To prepare the lasagna meat sauce, place the ground beef and ground sausage into a large pot over medium heat. Season with salt, pepper and Italian Seasoning, cooking until meat is browned. Drain and transfer meat to a large mixing bowl and stir in 1 jar of pasta sauce. Add 1/2 cup water to pasta jar, shake and add to meat sauce. Set aside meat sauce while you prepare the Ricotta mixture.
  • To prepare the Ricotta cheese mixture, place both containers of Ricotta into a large mixing bowl. Add the Parmesan cheese, salt, pepper and Italian Seasoning. Stir to combine.
  • Use two 9 x 13 inch baking pans or one large lasagna pan. Pour one jar of pasta sauce evenly into bottom of lasagna pans. Place lasagna noodles in a single layer over bottom of pan. Place a few tablespoons of Ricotta Cheese over each lasagna noodle, spread evenly. Top with a few tablespoons of meat sauce and a large handful of shredded cheese over top. Sprinkle with a couple tablespoons of fresh grated Parmesan Cheese. Repeat same steps for 2 more layers. For the final layer top with lasagna noodles then cover tops completely with last jar of pasta sauce and the rest of the shredded cheese. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. and bake for 45-60 minutes, until noodles are tender, cheese slightly browned on top.

How To Make Lasagne With Ready

I’m not usually a fan of those jars of ready-made sauces but it has to be said I think most of them have come a long way from the over salty and sugary thick gluey-like sauces they were a while back.

So armed with a big jar ofDolmio Lasagne Sauce – I used their Tomato, Roasted Onion and Garlic Sauce for lasagne and a big jar of DolmioLasagne White Sauce this was ready in no time and it actually tasted really good.

No need for a recipe because it tells you all this on the jar. However, I couldn’t help myself and I added a pinch of dried oregano and black pepper.

Using a mixture of pork and beef mince gives the lasagne much more flavour and I really urge you to try it, ask Gordon Ramsay, he’s the one that told me!

Just brown a mixture of half pork and half beef mince, when that’s nicely cooked just add the tomato sauce. Stir well and continue to cook for about 10 minutes or so.

As I say, I couldn’t help pouring in a small glass of red wine since I think it adds to the flavour along with a pinch of dried oregano and a good pinch of black pepper.

Using ready-made fresh lasagne sheets just layer lasagne, tomato sauce followed by a layer of white sauce and repeat making sure you finish with a lasagne sheet.

Then, top that with the rest of the white sauce and a layer of grated cheese.

Bake in a preheated oven 180C/350F or Gas 4 for about 35 minutes.

What You Need For The Best Lasagna Recipe:

A 9×13 baking pan.. I recommend using a nonstick pan for obvious reasons. You can also use a lasagna pan, which is just a hair bigger.

A small offset spatula. I love these so much and use them for tons of things. They really do make a massive difference when it comes to spreading things.

A lasagna server. Definitely not an absolute necessity, but it does make serving lasagna so much easier. I got one as a gift and cant believe what a difference it made. It works great for brownies too!

Why Is My Feta Not Melting

Making Simple Lasagna From Homemade (or jarred) Sauce

Why does feta cheese not melt? In general, cheese with high acidic content tends to become stringy when melted or doesnt want to melt at all. As a result, it will become extremely soft, but not fully liquify. The reason why it wont melt is because the acid dissolves the calcium that normally holds cheese together.

Regardless of the brand of lasagna youre using, be sure to check out the packaging and cook it for two-thirds of the recommended time. Since you will be baking the entire lasagna in the oven after you layer it, your pasta will continue cooking, so give it a place to go! Overcooked pasta does not make a good lasagna.

    What Ingredients You Need

Before you start out making this recipe, heres the grocery list of items youll need:

    • Lasagna sheets you can use fresh lasagna sheets, pre-boil dried lasagna sheets, use no-boil pasta, or even make your own .
    • Meat I use a combination of ground beef and pork, which gives a little variance of flavor and really boosts the dish.
    • Canned tomatoes A 28 oz can of chopped or crushed tomatoes works perfectly. Some people swear by San Marzano canned tomatoes. Its best to use a good quality can of tomatoes, so dont go for the cheapest one.
    • Tomato paste You want to use the thick tomato paste, not tomato sauce or passata.
    • Cheese Youll use riccota and Mozzarella cheese in the layers
    • Herbs and seasonings Oregano, Italian seasoning, salt and black pepper.
    • Onions and garlic If you really like onion and garlic, you can add more than what the recipe calls for. I like to keep it mild.

    How To Freeze Lasagna

Before Baking: Lasagna is one of those meals that always freezes so well. Make this easy lasagna recipe in advance by preparing it according to the instructions in the recipe card. However, instead of baking it, cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap and make sure that it sticks to the cheese on the top layer. Then add a layer of aluminum foil over the plastic wrap, and freeze for up to 3 months. When youre ready to enjoy, let the lasagna thaw in the refrigerator for 24 hours. Be sure to take the plastic wrap off and bake according to the instructions in the recipe card. You may need to add an extra 10-15 minutes to the covered cook time, if needed, for the lasagna to completely cook through.

After Baking: Sometimes when Im making lasagna, I actually make two pans, and save one for another day. After the baked lasagna has cooled completely to room temperature, either divide it into several portions and pack it in freezer safe containers, or freeze the whole pan. If youre freezing the whole pan, cover with the plastic wrap and then the foil, as instructed above. Lasagna will keep well in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator for 24 hours. Take the plastic wrap off and bake, covered with foil only, for about 30 minutes. You can also heat leftovers in the microwave.

    Make The Lasagna Meat Sauce

Give yourself a good couple hours to make the meat sauce because this is a big part of why Lasagna is so good! In a large heavy-bottomed pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add in onion and saute. Add in garlic and ground beef. Break meat apart as it browns. Pour in diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, water, bay leaves, dried basil, sugar, Italian Seasoning and salt. Bring to boil, then reduce heat to a gentle simmer. Cook sauce 1-2 hours or until very thick. You may have to add more water as you go to ensure it doesnt scorch which is totally normal.

Do You Cook Lasagna Covered Or Uncovered

If you leave your lasagna uncovered in the oven, it will become dry. Fight back with a foil-topped tray for a portion of the baking time. Once the lasagna has baked halfway through, remove the foil so the top can brown. If, once its fully cooked, the top still looks pale, turn on the broiler to help move things along.

    How Do You Layer Lasagna

My easy lasagna, no ricotta, no pre-made jar sauce here

Now that the meat sauce and cheese are prepped and ready, its time to for the layering.

  • First, spread about a cup of the meat sauce onto the bottom of your 9×13-inch baking dish.
  • Next, top with 3 lasagna noodles, 1/3 of the ricotta cheese mixture and 1 cup meat sauce. Repeat the layers twice.
  • End the layering with the remaining noodles, meat sauce and cheeses.
  • Cover with foil that has been sprayed with cooking spray.
  • Bake for 1 hour or until heated through, removing foil after 45 minutes. Let lasagna stand at least 15 minutes before cutting to serve. This sitting time will keep the lasagna from being too watery and will help it keep its shape when cut. Allow it to sit for 30 minutes for a cleaner slice.

Have Leftovers Heres How To Store Them

Half the fun of eating lasagna is being able to eat it AGAIN the next day. Store any extra lasagna in the fridge covered for up to 5 days. Whether that is in the same casserole dish or cut into individual slices in plastic containers, just ensure they are sealed airtight.

Individual slices can be reheated easily in the microwave. If you have more than a few slices in your casserole dish, cover with foil and bake at 350 degrees until heated completely through again.
