How To Make The Ultimate Lasagna

In a large skillet, combine the ground beef, onion, and minced garlic and cook until the meat is browned.

Add in the Prego, sugar, oregano, and Italian seasoning. Mix until well combined.

Simmer for 15 minutes.

While our sauce is simmering, grab a medium-sized bowl and mix together the ricotta cheese, eggs, and parmesan.

Grease the bottom of the crockpot. Then, put a layer of the sauce mixture down.

Add a layer of lasagna noodles. You will have to break these to make them fit.

Add another layer of sauce, then a layer of the ricotta mixture, and a layer of mozzarella cheese.

Repeat the sauce, noodles, sauce ricotta, mozzerala layers until you have no more sauce.

Cook on low for about 7 hours. If the noodles are not completely done, cook for another hour or so.

Allow to rest and then serve with your favorite bread. We love breadsticks, either homemade or store-bought.

Can You Freeze This Lasagna Recipe With Cottage Cheese

Yes, just like my chicken sloppy joes and sweet potato breakfast casserole, this lasagna freezes well! What I usually do is prepare and bake the full lasagna as written below, and then refrigerate the whole thing in the pan overnight.

Trust me, its MUCH easier to portion and wrap the pieces when the cottage cheese lasagna is chilled than when it is warm.

The next day, I remove the chilled pieces of lasagna with cottage cheese from the pan and wrap them individually in plastic wrap, then foil. I freeze the wrapped pieces in freezer bags.

To reheat, I unwrap as many pieces as I need and place them in a small casserole dish with a little bit of water in the bottom. I cover the dish with foil and bake at 350 degrees F until they are heated through.

If you love freezer recipes, try my vegetarian quiche recipe for breakfast and vanilla creme brulee for dessert!

Side note I think lasagna actually tastes better as leftovers! Just like melomakarona, something about it just tastes better the next day.

    Benefits Of Simmering Tomato Sauce

There are two advantages to simmering meat in a tomato sauce. The slow, low heat of simmering allows the flavors to concentrate as the sauce reduces. The natural acids in the tomatoes help to tenderize the meat gently over time while the meat infuses flavor into the sauce.

Crockpot Lasagna Recipe With Prego Traditional

    Sharing is caring!

This crockpot lasagna recipe made with Prego traditional sauce is delicious and easy to make.

I love all things crockpot. I love those dump-and-go recipes and not having to worry about what Im going to fix for dinner that night. With the slow cooker, its just a matter of letting cook and enjoying it when its finished.

One of our family favorites has become slow cooker lasagna. Years ago, before we tried it, I was skeptical. I didnt think the crockpot would fully cook the noodles and didnt think it would taste as good.

Well, I was wrong. In fact, our family now prefers lasagna made in the crockpot. This is great for me because that is less time I have to spend in the kitchen!

I just put this all together, only I substituted cottage cheese in place of ricotta. Hope its just as good! Cottage cheese is what we normally use. And also, my dish was too high and I was not able to add the last 4 noodles so I finished it off a layer early since my dish was 2 high. Cant wait to cook it! No parchment paper either. I doubled up foil and sprayed it with cooking spray to prevent sticking. Oh, the problem solving.. Lol

I love this version as you have some very nice variations like the fresh mozzarella. I will use the dry pasta next time and cook it versus the no-cook noodles. Im sure there probably is a big difference so now I am curious to see how much. I love using the sausage mixture in lasagna because I think it just adds so much flavor and brings everything up a notch. Lasagna is a nice holiday dish to make because you can do it ahead of time and enjoy your company .

Lasagna My Most Popular Recipe Ever

I cannot believe I have never posted this recipe. In my defense, when I make my lasagna, I usually make three huge pans at a time, so whenever I thought about writing down the recipe, I always talked myself out of it because its hard to nail down the actual measurements of the ingredients.

But, out of any meal that I make, this is by far the most popular one in my skill set. Its not just a regular lasagna recipe guys, I promise its super good. I dont want to tell you its better than your or your grandmothers because I cant guarantee a claim so strong, but I can tell you that a lot of people have switched to this recipe after they have had this recipe.

In fact, I asked my son Creed this morning what his favorite dinner washis answer, Lasagna.

I have been asked to make this for a friend for his birthday as his gift from his wife too. I thought that was so cute of her by the way, and I was honored. Also, before I get into the recipe, I usually make homemade rolls when I make lasagna too, and this roll recipe my absolute favorite because you can make them from start to finish in less than ONE HOUR!

Do I Cover It With Foil For Baking

No, we do NOT cover our lasagna with foil while baking. Honestly, I love when the corners and edges get some crispy bits.

However, if your lasagna with cottage cheese starts to get too brown for your liking while it is baking, feel free to loosely tent it with foil for the remainder of the cooking time.

Weeknight Simple Lasagna Soup With Ricotta Topping

    Posted on Last updated:

Fall has truly made its way to Ohio, as evidenced by the steadily dropping temperatures and multi-colored leaves that are currently plastered to my car, courtesy of an unrelenting drizzle of rain. Days like this cry out for a comforting hot bowl of soup, especially when the scheduled soccer practices carry on as usual, despite the soggy conditions.

Disclosure: Sponsored by Prego®. All opinions are my own.

We have a number of go-to soup recipes, but surprisingly, Ive yet to share one of my favorites with you this relatively quick and easy lasagna soup recipe!

I know youre thinking, lasagna soup?! Yeeesssss!!! It has all of the flavor of a slow-baked Sunday dinner lasagna wrapped up in a delicious soup that totally satisfies my weeknight dinner requirement of stove-to-table in 45 minutes or less.

This incredible feat is made possible, in part, by Prego® Traditional Pasta Sauce. Its the perfect starter for my lasagna soup, eliminating a myriad of seasonings I would need to measure and add otherwise. I do still add in some more Italian seasoning for extra flavor, but thats simple enough. Right?

Before I add the Prego sauce, though, I start by sautéing some onions and green peppers in olive oil. Then I add some ground hamburger, browning and breaking it up into bite-size pieces as it cooks. Finally I press in a few cloves of garlic, giving it all a quick stir.

You can assemble the lasagna ahead of time and refrigerate it, covered, for up to 24 hours before baking. If you are baking a lasagna that is fully chilled from being in the refrigerator, add about 15 minutes to the baking time.

Leftover lasagna can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Reheat in the microwave or in a covered dish in the oven until it is steaming hot.

What ingredients do I need to make this One Pot Easy Lasagna Skillet?

    • Lean ground beef I love using 96% lean ground beef. You could substitute the lean ground beef for ground turkey or chicken, if you desire.
    • Uncooked no yolk egg noodles or whole grain egg noodles
    • No sugar added Prego Italian Sauce or you can save 2 SmartPoints per serving if you replace it with my Zero Point Marinara Sauce
    • Fat free ricotta cheese- I find the fat free ricotta at my local Walmart store. If you cant locate the fat free ricotta cheese-you can use part-skim ricotta cheese, for additional points.
    • Light shredded mozzarella cheese- I like to use Pantry Market light mozzarella from Target
    • Grated Parmesan cheese

How do I make this One Pot Easy Lasagna Skillet?

Spray a large skillet with non stick cooking spray.

Cook beef or meat and minced onion over medium heat until the meat is no longer pink.

Stir in marinara sauce, noodles and water.

In a small bowl, combine ricotta cheese, Parmesan cheese, and parsley.

    Fold in the mozzarella cheese.

Using a tablespoon drop cheese mixture by the spoonful over cooked pasta.

Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until cheeses slightly melt.

    How To Store Lasagna

To start, let the lasagna cool down to room temperature. Then divvy it up into serving sizes and store them in an air-tight container.

Portioning out your lasagna makes it much easier to heat and eat when hunger strikes.

It also means youll have a grab-and-go lunch when youre rushing out the door to work.

An air-tight container is also best because it keeps food fresh.

Use one of these, and your scrumptious Prego lasagna leftovers will stay good in the fridge for about 5 days.

I have a good hunch you might gobble it up way before then, though!

To make that Prego really taste delicious, though, I add a secret ingredient: one pound of Italian Sausage. I brown it in a sauté pan, breaking it up into chunks, and then draining the cooked sausage on a plate thats been covered with paper towels. Something about that Italian Sausage works MAGIC on the Prego, and suddenly, youve turned something kind of boring into the Food of the Gods!

YOU can feel free to doll it up further: sauté some garlic in olive oil for a minute and throw that in. Rip up some fresh basil leaves and throw those in. Maybe add a 1/2 teaspoon of dried oregano and throw that in. Any of those additions will add more lovely flavor

OR: if you already have YOUR favorite Italian red sauce in the freezer that your family loves, and nothing else will do, use that.

And if youre THAT kind of cook, you might want to check out my recipe on how to make your own Homemade Ricotta Cheese.

But for my husband, a simple jar of Prego with the addition of fried Italian sausage is what he loves. And, frankly, I do too.

    Nom, nom, nom!

So here it is: and it truly is the Best Lasagna Recipe Ive ever tasted. So good, in fact, that I dare to call it the:

    Meat Lovers Lasagna

Yes! Thats what Im doing in this recipe for cottage cheese lasagna, and the finished product is amazing.

I recommend using small curd cottage cheese when putting cottage cheese in lasagna, so that the curds disappear into the cheese mixture more easily and mimic the smoothness of ricotta a little more closely.

Can You Layer Cottage Cheese Lasagna The Night Before

Yes! Just like with my Greek lasagna, this lasagna recipe with cottage cheese can be assembled, covered and refrigerated up to 3 days before baking. Bring to room temperature on the counter 1 hour before baking.

While the lasagna is baking, make a fresh salad to go along with it. My Christmas salad is great all winter long, not just for Christmas. Same story with my Easter salad. Its the perfect accompaniment to something rich like lasagna.

    How To Freeze Lasagna

You can assemble the lasagna and then freeze it before baking. Wrap the lasagna tightly before freezing, and freeze for up to 3 months. When you are ready to cook the lasagna, let it thaw in the refrigerator for 24 hours. Then bake as directed in the recipe, adding about 15 minutes to the baking time since a lasagna that is cold from the refrigerator will take longer to heat through.

You can also freeze lasagna after baking, for up to 3 months. I like to wrap individual servings of lasagna and freeze them for a quick meal. Thaw in the refrigerator or microwave before reheating.

    How To Make Lasagna

The steps to making lasagna are:

  • Boil the lasagna noodles.
  • Brown the ground beef with onion and garlic.
  • To the pan, add the marinara sauce, Italian seasoning and fresh parsley. Simmer the sauce for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • In a bowl, stir together the ricotta cheese and an egg. Shred the mozzarella cheese.
  • Layer the lasagna.
  • Bake until hot and bubbly.
  • What Are The Other Ingredients In This Recipe

    • Meat. Youll need 1-1/2 pounds total meat for the sauce. My mom likes a combination of ground beef and mild Italian sausage. My dad and I like a combo of ground beef and spicy Italian sausage. You could also do all beef , no sausage, but I believe the sausage adds an essential depth of flavor to this dish, as well as my sausage pasta skillet.
    • Herbs. This lasagna with cottage cheese recipe has always been made with dried oregano and parsley. If you wanted to use fresh herbs, you could, but the dried herbs are what weve always used.
    • Mozzarella. You can use shredded mozzarella, but weve found that this lasagna is easiest to assemble if you use mozzarella slices. Not the fresh, creamy mozzarella that is usually sold in a ball , but low-moisture, part-skim slices. Think cheese slices that you would put on a sandwich, probably found at or near the deli counter.
    • Noodles. We use traditional lasagna noodles for this lasagna recipe with cottage cheese. I know that they make those no-boil noodles now, but weve never tried this recipe with those . However, Cooks Illustrated has a guide to the best no-boil lasagna noodles and how to use them, if youd like to try it.
    • Tomatoes. There is A LOT of intense tomato flavor going on in this lasagna, and I love it. Youll need a combination of canned tomato sauce and tomato paste.
