Keto Pizza And Low Carb Marinara Sauce
I created my first keto pizza tonight. My own recipe a twist on fathead dough was the base and it was AMAZING. I mean UHHHH-MAZING!
Making your own keto pizza sauce can make all the difference. Traditional pizza sauces are rather high in carbs.
So, off I went to create something. Something with a little kick but not with an overwhelming non-pizza-sauce flavor. But heres the thing, the lasagna marinara sauce that I had already created can really double as both. It is amazingly versatile.
Sauce and tomatoes are tough, though. While I dont believe we need to stay away from tomatoes, I do think we need to be mindful of the carb count in them no matter how we eat them.
This keto pizza sauce turned out to be quite versatile. Im thinking it might even be my sauce of choice to dip these this keto flatbread into. Hmm. Why not?
Without further ado, lets dive into the flavors of choice for this sauce.

Mikeys Low Carb Pizza Crust
Mikeys is a popular Paleo brand, so we were glad to see that they sell a Low Carb Pizza Crust that you can buy online!
If you are doing Paleo AND low carb, this is your best bet for pizza crust.
From a texture perspective, it was tough to get the entire pizza super crispy, though the edges did crisp up decently. The middle of the pizza crust ended up softer and was prone to crumbling.
In the end, we had a better experience treating our Mikeys pizzas as a knife and fork affair.
Since we didnt have to worry about being able to pick up the slices, we loaded up on our cheese and toppings , and it turned into almost like some deep dish pizzas weve had before.

What Can I Do With Pizza Sauce
The most obvious thing to use pizza sauce for is making pizza. It goes with almost any flavors and toppings you want.
However, dont let its name fool you, just because its called low carb pizza sauce, doesnt mean that there arent other foods to eat it with besides pizza. Lets look at all the options.
Best Tomatoes For Sugar
When you make sugar-free pizza sauce you can use either canned or fresh tomatoes. Lets share with you my favorite pick and some information about both choices.
For this keto-friendly pizza sauce recipe I use crushed tomatoes, I like them the best. I feel that they have the perfect texture for making pizza sauce with the least amount of effort.
You can also buy tomatoes in a can that are whole, large diced, and petite diced. There is also tomato paste which is very concentrated and used to thicken your sauce if thats the way that you want it.
The best type of canned tomatoes with the most authentic taste is San Marzano. They usually come whole in a light tomato sauce. They are the top choice in Italy.
San Marzano tomatoes are typically more expensive than other canned tomatoes that you can buy but the flavor is unbeatable. If you can buy them on sale thats even better.
You can use any other type of tomatoes that you want that is in your supermarket or that is in your price range. It will still make delicious keto pizza sauce!
If you are looking for real juicy tomatoes get tomatoes on the vine or any other similar type of fresh tomato in the store. Make sure that they are bright red, which means they are ripe, rather than pale in color which means they are not ripe.
If the fresh tomatoes are ripe then they will make a sweeter sauce with a lot more flavor. If the tomatoes are not ripe enough then the low carb pizza sauce will be tasteless.

Health Benefits Of Tomatoes
Tomatoes are one of the richest dietary sources of lycopene. Lycopene is a carotenoid that is responsible for the deep red color of tomatoes and other fruits and vegetables.
But coloring isnt all this carotenoid is good for. Consuming lycopene has been associated with reduced risk of various cancers, most notably prostate, breast, and lung cancers.
Adding lycopene-rich foods to your diet may also have a protective effect on your heart, supporting healthy cholesterol levels and reducing the risk of heart attack.

Make Ahead And Storing Options
Its always great to be ahead of things and plan our several meals at once. Since sugar free pizza sauce is easy to make, and it lasts for a few days, its a good idea to make some ahead of time if you have a few minutes.
That way you will save time when you make your keto pizza, and dinner will be ready sooner.
Making a double or triple batch is just as easy as making one batch so you may as well. If you are not going to use it all in the same week, then you can always freeze the unused portion.
Puree The Sauce Or Not
One consideration youll need to make is whether to puree the tomatoes or leave them in chunks. The sauce will be a bit chunky when using chopped tomatoes in the can.
If you prefer smooth sauce, you can use canned tomato puree instead of chopped tomatoes or puree it quickly in the pot with an immersion blender.

Thinslim Low Carb Pizza Crusts
These ThinSlim Low Carb Pizza Crusts are not made from cauliflower but rather wheat protein isolate. Because of the additional fiber and gluten, the crusts hold together well. However, if youve had a more fibrous pizza crust like the whole wheat variety, the texture is a bit different.
Im very sensitive to the protein bar aftertaste thats difficult to describe but everyone seems to know the taste. Since these are made mainly with protein isolate, you do get that aftertaste. These have a lot of great natural ingredients but you will want to really overpower the taste with some strong toppings and sauce.

Ingredients: wheat protein isolate, vital wheat gluten, oat fiber, modified wheat starch, almond flour, flax seed meal, olive oil, chicory root, high protein patent flour, apple cider vinegar, yeast, salt, stevia
Is Crustless Pizza Keto
Crustless pizza is definitely keto-friendly, particularly when you order a low carb pizza sauce, choose pepperoni, sausage, ham, or other low carb meat toppings, and stick to non-starchy veggies like mushrooms, spinach, onions, and peppers. Because there is no crust, a crustless pizza can easily be high in fat, moderate in protein, and low in carbs, which is a desirable keto macro ratio.

The total carbs are a little tricky to compute with Giovannis online nutrition information, AND the fact that different stores offer different sizes or types of crustless pizza.
The nutrition facts show information for a basic cheese pizza for each size, and then info for each individual topping. There is no way to subtract just the crust from the base cheese pizza. However, you can assume your crustless pizza will be low carb since there is no traditional crust.

How To Shop For Low
If pasta is in your dinner rotation every week, you’re probably buying jarred marinara sauce pretty regularly . And marinara sauce can be a healthy addition to your weeknight meals: it’s often loaded with veggies but lacking in the fat and calories that come with cream-based sauces like alfredo.
The problem is that if you don’t check out the label on the back of your jar, you could be inadvertently wiping out all the health benefits of marinara with sky-high amounts of sugar.
“A serving size of marinara is usually ½ cup,” says Amy Shapiro, RD, CDN, and founder of Real Nutrition. “Aim for a sauce with about 35 to 50 calories, with sugar only coming from the tomatoes.”
According to Shapiro, here’s what to look for when you’re shopping for healthy marinara sauces:
- The best options contain five grams or less of sugar, and roughly the same amount of carbs. Ideally, you would hit less than 400 milligrams of sodium, too, but it’s pretty hard to find sauces that are low in sugar and sodium unless you’re able to shell out big bucks for organic jars.
- Look for minimal ingredients. Shapiro says this means only three or four whole foods plus herbs and spices. If sugar is added, it should be far down on the list, not near the top.
- Organic and local options are good ways to ensure you’re getting a cleaner, less processed sauce, but it’s not a necessity. In fact, Shapiro’s favorite brand isn’t organic, but she says it’s still “simple and downright delicious.”
