One of the ingredients to make this is pickled red chili. Its pretty time consuming to make your own fresh chili paste and pickle it to make this recipe. But thankfully there is a readily available ingredient, which is a shortcut to help you make authentic sweet chili sauce.
And thats SAMBAL OELEK!Its an Asian chili sauce made with red chili peppers and rice vinegar. I always have a bottle of it in my fridge because I use it all the time when cooking curries or stir-fries.
Sambal Oelek used to be a little tougher to find, unless you had easy access to an Asian grocery store, but now you can easily find them in most supermarkets. Just check the Asian food aisle in your local supermarket. There are two types of Sambl oelek
- Regular chili sambal oelek that I use for this recipe and,
- Chili garlic sambal oelek
For the most authentic flavor, use the regular sambal oelek. But if thats not available, you can use the garlic version too. Just make sure to cut down the amount of garlic cloves in the recipe by half.
Another ingredient that I use to make sweet chili sauce is soy sauce OR fish sauce. Both of these ingredients help season the sauce and add another level of flavor to it. I love adding fish sauce for a more authentic Thai or Vietnamese flavor flair with a nice little umami kick too.

In other news, we are bracing ourselves for a direct hit from what is now being called Hurricane Earl which is on a course aimed right at us. How To Make Sweet Chili Sauce
Step 1: Blend the peppers
Rinse the peppers, remove the stems, and chop into pieces. Then place along with the garlic, rice vinegar, soy sauce, salt, and 3/4 cup of water in a blender. Blend into coarser or finer pieces, depending on your desired consistency.
Step 2: Cook the mixture
Now, pour the mixture into a saucepan, stir in the sugar and bring to the boil. Then reduce the heat and simmer for about 3 minutes.
Add 2 tablespoons of water to a small bowl and stir in the cornstarch to dissolve. Then stir it into the sweet-sour chili sauce and simmer for another 1-2 minutes until the sauce has thickened to desired consistency .
Step 3: Store in a sealed jar or bottle
Finally, pour it into a clean jar or small bottle. Seal airtight and let cool. Store in the refrigerator for a week or freeze for the future.

How To Make Sugar Free Sweet Chilli Sauce
1.) Chop the red chilli, ginger and garlic. Add them to a pan together with the apple cider vinegar, coconut aminos and powdered sweetener.
2.) Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and let the mix bubble away on a low heat for 5 minutes.
Mix the hot water with the xanthan gum. Blend well so there are no lumps. Add to the pan and cook for another 5 minutes or until the desired consistency is reached.
Be aware that the sauce will thicken further while it cools. Fill into a clean glass jar and let cool.

How To Store The Sauce
I purchased some glass bottles from the Dollar Shop, washed them in the dishwasher, and they were ready to go. Just make sure that whatever you end up putting your sauce in that it has a good seal on it.
You could use glass sauce bottles, plastic sauce bottles, or even reuse old jars you already have.
Importantly, this sauce should be kept in the fridge with the lid firmly sealed. It will be good for 7 days if it lasts that long!

Making this Thai Sweet Chili Sauce is incredibly easy. You don’t need any special equipment and you don’t need to cook it down. Add all of the ingredients in a bowl and you just need to mix everything together! How easy is that? Make this homemade sweet chili sauce and you’re set for any kind of Asian dish!
For the orange marmalade, make sure you use some that’s completely sugar free! Some have hidden fake sugars like aspartame, maltodextrin or sucralose so you really do have to look in the ingredients to see what they are. The one I found in Japan only had orange juice, peel, lemon and pectin with no sugar added!
I make a big batch of this sauce and add it to a glass pickling jar that I keep in the fridge. Since it uses orange marmalade, it does tend to keep a while. You don’t need to add a lot, depending on what you’re making of course, and the best trick I have for you is to let it cook down with your protein and veggies.
The longer it cooks, the thicker and stickier the sauce gets. Feel free to add more chili pepper flakes or chili oil to this recipe if you think that it’s not spicy enough. Depending on the dish I’m making, I may or may not add a tsp of pepper flakes to the recipe.

Can I Make This Recipe Gluten Free
The only ingredient with gluten in this sweet chili sauce recipe is soy sauce. You can easily substitute the soy sauce with gluten free tamari sauce, to make sweet chili sauce gluten free. Using soy sauce or tamari sauce will still make sure this recipe is vegan as well. Alternatively, you can leave out the soy sauce and just season it with more salt.
I have also recommended using fish sauce instead of soy sauce for the more authentic Thai/Vietnamese flavor. Nuoc mam and Nam pla are naturally gluten free, but not vegan.
How To Make Homemade Chili Sauce The Recipe Method
Whisk the Ingredients. Add all of the ingredients to a large bowl. Whisk them together until the chili sauce is nicely uniform and all of the ingredients are mixed through. You can also use a blender or food processor, but a whisk is usually sufficient.
Simmer for Flavor. Pour the chili sauce into a small pot or sauce pan. Heat and simmer for 10 minutes to let the flavors meld and develop. This is an important step. Taste and adjust for salt, honey, and other spices. Add more water for a thinner sauce. Its really meant to be a thicker sauce, and it will thicken up as it cools, but if you prefer a thinner sauce, go for it!
Cool and Store. Cool the chili sauce completely. Store in the refrigerator, covered.
This chili sauce recipe is best served cold as a dipper, though there are so many other uses for it. It will last for several weeks easily. It makes about 2 cups or so. It upscales very easily, so make a big batch next time!

What To Dip In A Sugar
There are so many things you can dip in this keto sweet chili sauce to give them a POW! of flavor. Traditional meats like chicken and beef are perfect. I especially like it with shrimp. In fact, one of my favorite shrimp recipes, keto coconut shrimp is fabulous with it.
However, if you dont eat meat or are avoiding it, you can also use it with a keto vegetable stir-fry. Or maybe pour it over a block of cream cheese and serve with keto crackers and veggies?
It also makes a great marinade for grilled fish or chicken. Of course, I like to spoon even more on after the meats grilled. I may have even poured some over my baked chicken leg tonight for dinner!

How Long Can You Keep It
You can keep it for up to a week in the fridge. Make sure to store it in a sealed container. It may congeal a little in the fridge but heat it for a few seconds at a time in the microwave and stir through to return it to a more pourable consistency.
You can also freeze this for up to 3 months. A good idea is to portion it into ice cube trays so you can pop a portion out when you want. Again it may congeal when its defrosted, but heat it slightly and stir thoroughly to return it to a thinner consistency.

Can I Can Sweet Chili Sauce
You can, but Im not a canning expert to be able to tell you HOW to can it. Ive had many readers ask me this question and Ive had many more readers tell me that they have canned their sweet chili sauce with success, with a few substitutions.
The one obstacle for canning this sauce is the use of cornstarch to thicken the sauce here. Since recipes using cornstarch or cornflour are not recommended for canning, you will need to substitute the cornstarch if youre planning on canning it.
Cornstarch can create lumps in the sauce during the canning process which can interfere with the process itself AND the final outcome.
There are TWO options for those of you who want to can this sweet chili sauce.
Using Clear Jel for canning sweet chili sauce
You can use Clear Jel for this recipe and get great results! Make sure to use the cook type clear jel and NOT the instant type.
Ive found that I have to use just a little extra Clear Jel than cornstarch to thicken this sweet chili sauce. For every 3 tsp of cornstarch , I use 4 tsp Clear Jel .
Since Clear Jel is a modified cornstarch, it should be gluten free. But check with the manufacturer to be sure.
