This Is Sweet Baby Rays Most Underrated Bbq Sauce
Americans like barbecue and all the sauces that make this meal so finger licking good. In 2019, 8.82 million Americans used at least 4 bottles of the sweet and savory sauce we brush on our barbecue meats as they grill . And among those brands we purchase, Sweet Baby Rays barbecue sauce consistently ranks on lists of best barbecue sauces. Just do an internet search and you will find that food sites like Delish, Taste of Home, and the Kitchn, to name a few, rank the original flavor among the best. And its easy to understand why.
Sweet Baby Rays barbecue sauce got its big break when it won a rib contest in the Midwest . After its fateful victory, the now-famous brand decided to go commercial and ultimately developed a suite of sauces, expanding from its classic original barbecue to variations that include a Hawaiian flavor, Sweet & Spicy, Maple, Hickory & Brown Sugar, and more. The sauces moniker is a hat tip to the creators little brother who was nicknamed Sweet Baby Ray, and aptly so. The collection of sauces range in flavor, but there is a definite sweetness to each. However, theres one Sweet Baby Rays barbecue sauce whose taste rises to the top, head and shoulders above the rest but never seems to get the love it deserves. In fact, this sauce is probably the most underrated in the Sweet Baby Ray collection. Which one is it?

Ingredients For Homemade Sweet Baby Rays Bbq Sauce:
- Ketchup: is the base of this recipe. Keep in mind, you want to use a ketchup that isnt too sweet here otherwise the bbq sauce will end up being extremely sweet with the addition of brown sugar and molasses. There are several brands that have no sugar added, I suggest using something like that
- Brown sugar: adds sweetness to the sauce
- Molasses: add both sweetness and a deep rich flavor to the sauce
- Pineapple juice: adds a unique fruity flavor profile
- Worcestershire sauce: adds an umami flavor to the sauce. Keep in mind that Worcestershire does make this sauce not suitable for my vegan friends. So if thats you, you might want to swap the Worcestershire for one that is vegan friendly
- Apple cider vinegar: adds the tang that you find in bbq sauce
- Seasonings: Theres a few select seasonings I like to use that make the best sauce! Smoked paprika is the most important one of them all. It adds so much depth of flavor. Youll also need dry mustard powder, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. Keep in mind that the cayenne is optional, if you want to make this not spicy, leave the cayenne out!
- Hot sauce: adds a bit of a kick!
- Cornstarch: helps thicken the sauce

Kc Masterpiece Original Bbq Sauce
Another of the budget options on your grocers shelves is KC Masterpiece Original BBQ Sauce. And just like Krafts concoction, this stuff is absolutely awful. KC Masterpiece attempts to use hickory smoke flavor to balance its sickly sweetness, and the result is an overpowering taste of mediocrity. If you make the mistake of adding it to meat of any kind, this sauce is all you will taste. However, some people do make cookies with it hows that for a testament to how sweet it is?
Additionally, KC Masterpiece Original BBQ sauce has a chemical aftertaste, which is definitely not the taste you want in your mouth after an evening spent slaving over a hot grill.
Dont be fooled by the Hickory Brown Sugar version that KC Masterpiece also markets. It tastes almost exactly the same as their original sauce with just a tiny hint of the existence of brown sugar.

Kraft Original Barbecue Sauce

If you enjoy ingesting a whole lot of sugar, youll love Kraft Original Barbecue Sauce. In fact, theres so much of it in this sauce that its the first ingredient listed on the bottle. Yuck! Why would they ruin what used to be a totally acceptable barbecue sauce? Adding a little bit of sweetness to your sauce is one thing, but turning into a bottle of nothing but sugar is just plain gross and not what anyone is looking for in a barbecue sauce.
To make matters even worse, Kraft attempts to cover up the sweetness by adding an obnoxious level of spiciness. Two problems: First, the spiciness isnt pleasant it tastes like stale black pepper. Secondly, it really doesnt mix well with all the sugar. This stuff is just a disaster. All that sugar cant be too great for your health, either. Avoid it, even if its the cheapest option on the shelf.

Sweet Baby Rays Honey Bbq Sauce
Clues in the title really. Honey derived from bees.
And as Sweet Baby Rays use real honey in their recipes, this one Im afraid, is out.
Heres the ingredient list, for reference:
High Fructose Corn Syrup, Distilled Vinegar, Tomato Paste, Honey , Modified Corn Starch, Salt, Flavouring, Colour: E150D, Pineapple Juice Concentrate, Spices , Preservative: E211, Smoke Flavour, Dried Garlic, Molasses, Corn Syrup, Sugar, Tamarind
And unfortunately, this brand does love to use honey in their product range and in other products.
So the following sauces appear non-vegan too:
- Maple Barbecue Sauce
- Honey Hot Sauce and Marinade
- Honey Barbecue Wing Sauce

Recipe Testing And Reality
We know it is hard to compete with high fructose corn syrup and refined sugar, but we absolutely LOVE our healthier version. It has incredible flavor, and we feel that it comes pretty darn close to being labeled a WFPB copycat version of Sweet Baby Rays.
One of the things we are most proud of is that it does NOT have a ketchup base as nearly every other BBQ sauce out there does. This loveliness is made from scratch and the flavor is yummilicous!
Ill let Mom tell you more!
Rufus Teague Honey Sweet Bbq Sauce
According to the label, Rufus Teague made some barbecue sauce, put it in a jar, and shared it with his boys. It was so good, his boys pestered him until he made another batch. And from there, this sauce spread from Kansas City to the rest of the country. Give Rufus Teague Honey Sweet BBQ Sauce a taste and you too will be hankering for more once you run out.
Most barbecue sauces that try to incorporate honey are failures but this one is a home run. It has a sweet taste but the sweetness has depth due to the perfect mix of honey, brown sugar, white sugar, molasses, orange juice concentrate, and raisin paste. Its like an orchestra of heavenly nectar that everyone with a sweet tooth can enjoy.
The label also says Rufus Teague Honey Sweet BBQ Sauce is damn good. If two words were needed to describe this sauce, those were two wisely chosen words. Its impossible to disagree.

Well, representatives at the company have confirmed that they do not contain, or derive from, any animal products.
Excellent.
