How To Make Alfredo Sauce:

  • The first step to making Alfredo is to warm your butter and cream in a large saucepan over low heat. You will let it simmer for about 2 minutes.
  • Next, you will whisk in your garlic and seasonings. Whisking constantly for about one minute just to let the garlic cook.
  • Lastly, you will add your parmesan cheese and stir just until the cheese has melted and your sauce is smooth.

Note that it is best to use freshly grated parmesan cheese right off of the block so that your sauce isn’t grainy. I do not recommend using the “shaker” style container grated cheese for this recipe.

The Parmesan will thicken this sauce up. If it isn’t quite thick enough, allow the sauce to stand for 2-3 minutes before serving.

What Other Seasonings Can I Add

We only added garlic powder and black pepper but there are many other seasonings you could add. Try stirring in a pinch of nutmeg, red pepper flakes, dried basil, dried oregano, or dried parsley. You can also add salt if needed but taste the sauce first to make sure. Only add a little at a time, tasting after incorporating it before adding more.

How To Store Leftovers

  • To store: transfer any extra to a storage container and allow to cool completely Secure with a tight fitting lid and refrigerate for up to 4 days.
  • To reheat: transfer to a saucepan or microwave-safe bowl. Gently warm over low heat, or in 30-second intervals in the microwave, until warmed, stirring occasionally. It will soften and return to a sauce as it warms. If the sauce seems too thick, whisk in a splash of milk until the sauce is to your liking.

  • Dont pour the oil too fast you want a nice slow drizzle to create an emulsion.

Easy To Make Pasta Sauce

I often get asked about how to make certain types of food or what recipes are really easy. Here is one that I always pass out to people.

It is simple to make Alfredo Sauce and it turns out very well no matter if you are a highly experienced cook or if you are just a beginner.

If you are in a jam and need dinner in a hurry, you can make this sauce more quickly than you can cook the pasta.

Alfredo sauce is a great way to use leftovers. If you have some cooked chicken, you could add it to this pasta recipe.

How To Make Alfredo Sauce With Milk

To make a lighter version of traditional Alfredo, you can use milk instead of heavy cream. To do so, simply use the recipe above but substitute the heavy cream with ¼ cup all purpose flour and 3 cups of milk of your choosing. Melt the butter in a saucepan, and then add the ¼ cup flour and whisk to combine. Cook the flour and butter mixture for about 5 minutes before stirring in the milk in ½ cup increments.

How To Thicken Alfredo Sauce

Alfredo Sauce – How to make

If you make the recipe with heavy cream, you shouldnt need to thicken this Alfredo sauce. Heavy cream contains at least 36% butterfat . When the cream comes to a simmer, the water content evaporates, leaving a deliciously thick sauce behind. The cheese also adds body when it melts, giving you a naturally thick sauce.

Everyones preferences are different, so you may prefer a sauce thats thicker than the recipe below. You have a few options for thickening sauce without using flour or cornstarch:

  • Simmer the pasta in the sauce. The pasta will exude extra starch, adding body to the sauce.
  • Add extra cheese. It will only make the sauce cheesier and more delicious, so go for it!
  • Add an ounce or two of cream cheese. Cream cheese is naturally thick and creamy, and it has the right flavor profile for Alfredo, too.
  • Try an egg yolk. Eggs are great for thickening sauces, but they can scramble when exposed to hot temperatures. Youll need to temper the yolk first by whisking a cup of the hot sauce into a bowl with the yolk. Then, you can add the tempered yolk mixture to the pot.

Ways To Use This Easy Alfredo Sauce

What to do with your cheesy Alfredo sauce? Oh, let me count the ways. You can toss it with pasta, bien sur. Use fettuccine if you’re craving fettuccine alfredo, or elbows if you want mac and cheese. The sauce is also great spooned over steamed vegetables, baked potatoes, fish and other seafood, or chicken.

I’m getting hungry just thinking about it. Good thing I still have a few jars stashed away in my fridge. Happy cooking, everyone!

Homemade Alfredo Sauce With Cream Cheese

There is nothing better than a decadent, cream cheese Alfredo sauce when it comes down to dinner. I must admit however, that while my sisters recipe calls for milk instead of whipping creamI use whipping cream instead. When I am craving Alfredo sauce, it may as well be the worst-for-your-health-ever Alfredo sauce out there.

I am not sure how the cream cheese Alfredo sauce came to be but the point is that it shaves a bazillion calories off of the recipe. You use the cream cheese to add the richness that whipping cream brings to the recipe and it actually works like a charm! Yes, you are still using butter, milk and Parmesan cheese but you are removing a cup of whipping cream and replacing it with & frac13 package of cream cheese instead.

How To Make A Healthy Alfredo Sauce

For a lighter version of Alfredo sauce, try making a roux with one tablespoon each butter and flour. After about two minutes, when the mixture is foamy and bubbling, add your liquid of choice to create a white sauce. You can use one cup of regular milk, half-and-half or a mixture of chicken stock and heavy cream.

For a gluten-free version, feel free to use 1-1/2 teaspoons of cornstarch instead. Create a slurry by mixing it with a tablespoon or two of water. Then, bring the liquid to a simmer and whisk in the slurry. Continue to simmer until the mixture is thickened.

How To Store Alfredo Sauce

Healthy Alfredo Sauce Recipe (gluten
  • Refrigerate Any airtight container will work well to store the Alfredo sauce in. But I like to store mine in a Mason jar. It makes it easy to pour out a little at a time. It will keep in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Freezing This is one of those recipes that does not freeze well. It causes the sauce to separate and is not the same after it has been frozen.
  • Reheating The best way to reheat Alfredo sauce is in a saucepan on the stovetop. The key is to heat it over low heat and to whisk to incorporate everything back together. I do not recommend reheating this in the oven. It will cause the sauce to become oily and separate from its self. Once you have reheated the sauce, do not refrigerate or reheat again.

The Hollywood Romance Behind Fettuccine Alfredo

According to one version of the story, Alfredo di Lelio invented Alfredo sauce served with fettuccini pasta in 1914 for his wife Ines, who was pregnant with their second child and too nauseous to hold down other foods . According to another version, he invented the meal in 1908, to strengthen his weakened wife, after the birth of their first son. Before serving it to her, he prayed to Saint Anna, the protector of pregnant woman . Like a miracle, the prayer worked.

They also took the recipe for fettuccine Alfredo home with them to the United States. Who knows maybe they served it to other Hollywood elite at their 22 room mansion in Beverly Hills . Either way, the dish soon became a Hollywood favorite. The rest, as they say, is history.

How To Store And Reheat Alfredo Sauce

If you happen to have some leftovers, I recommend storing the sauce in its own airtight container. Do not combine the pasta and the sauce in the same container. I recommend reheating the sauce in a small saucepan over low temperature, when the sauce melts due to the heat, you may need to add a tablespoon or two of heavy cream to thin out the sauce. I typically make fresh pasta the second time I serve the sauce.

Homemade Alfredo Sauce Ingredients

  • Butter I used unsalted since the Parmesan is a bit salty.
  • Garlic Please use fresh garlic cloves for best results. You can add more or less to personal preference.
  • Heavy Cream For best results, you need to use heavy cream to make the sauce creamy and for a thick sauce.
  • Parmesan Cheese Please dont use the pre-grated Parmesan cheese especially the one in the large tube on the shelf at the grocery store. It will not melt well in this recipe. Buy a small chunk of good quality Parmesan and use a grater to grate it yourself.
  • Salt Completely optional and not necessarily needed since the Parmesan is salty. Give the sauce a try first before adding.
  • Pepper Again optional. I like a little freshly ground black pepper but some people dont like the little black specks in the sauce. You could also use white pepper if youre one of those people.

Other ingredients you might want to add but completely optional: cooked vegetables , other spices , and/or precooked proteins . Chopped sundried tomatoes would also be delicious and something a little different. Delish!

And what is a bechamel but a roux-based sauce made with butter, flour, and milk. Of course.
