How To Make Alfredo Sauce:
- The first step to making Alfredo is to warm your butter and cream in a large saucepan over low heat. You will let it simmer for about 2 minutes.
- Next, you will whisk in your garlic and seasonings. Whisking constantly for about one minute just to let the garlic cook.
- Lastly, you will add your parmesan cheese and stir just until the cheese has melted and your sauce is smooth.
Note that it is best to use freshly grated parmesan cheese right off of the block so that your sauce isn’t grainy. I do not recommend using the “shaker” style container grated cheese for this recipe.
The Parmesan will thicken this sauce up. If it isn’t quite thick enough, allow the sauce to stand for 2-3 minutes before serving.

We only added garlic powder and black pepper but there are many other seasonings you could add. Try stirring in a pinch of nutmeg, red pepper flakes, dried basil, dried oregano, or dried parsley. You can also add salt if needed but taste the sauce first to make sure. Only add a little at a time, tasting after incorporating it before adding more.
How To Store Leftovers
- To store: transfer any extra to a storage container and allow to cool completely Secure with a tight fitting lid and refrigerate for up to 4 days.
- To reheat: transfer to a saucepan or microwave-safe bowl. Gently warm over low heat, or in 30-second intervals in the microwave, until warmed, stirring occasionally. It will soften and return to a sauce as it warms. If the sauce seems too thick, whisk in a splash of milk until the sauce is to your liking.

I recommend reheating the sauce in a small saucepan over low temperature, when the sauce melts due to the heat, you may need to add a tablespoon or two of heavy cream to thin out the sauce. I typically make fresh pasta the second time I serve the sauce.
Homemade Alfredo Sauce Ingredients
- Butter I used unsalted since the Parmesan is a bit salty.
- Garlic Please use fresh garlic cloves for best results. You can add more or less to personal preference.
- Heavy Cream For best results, you need to use heavy cream to make the sauce creamy and for a thick sauce.
- Parmesan Cheese Please dont use the pre-grated Parmesan cheese especially the one in the large tube on the shelf at the grocery store. It will not melt well in this recipe. Buy a small chunk of good quality Parmesan and use a grater to grate it yourself.
- Salt Completely optional and not necessarily needed since the Parmesan is salty. Give the sauce a try first before adding.
- Pepper Again optional. I like a little freshly ground black pepper but some people dont like the little black specks in the sauce. You could also use white pepper if youre one of those people.
