- Potato Salad – This would add an exciting twist to any potato salad!
The Birth Of The Big Mac
The Big Mac was first cooked back in 1967 by a franchisee in Pittsburgh named Jim Delligatti. At first, he only served the creation at his restaurants, but the burgers popularity quickly grew.
Within a year, the Big Mac began popping up on McDonalds menu boards across the region and then the country.
In the early days, the Big Mac sauce recipe varied amongst different parts of the US, and it wasnt until 1972 that McDonalds standardized the recipe.
Two years later, the famous jingle was first released, and the rest is the stuff of fast-food legend.

Copycat Big Mac Sauce
Its probably safe to assume that most of us have had a McDonalds Big Mac burger at some point. Ive had a few, but to be honest, I would much rather have the Quarter Pounder with Bacon. But, put some Copycat Big Mac Sauce on that Quarter Pounder! Let me explain.
McDonalds is a treat that we very seldom take part in. In my 20s, I probably ate too much McDonalds. My ex wife and I would often pick up baby supplies at Walmart and enjoy a burger and fries combo before heading back home.
That was 18 years ago, but I still remember her order. It was the same thing every single time. She would order a Quarter Pounder Combo and substitute the mayonnaise with mac sauce. She always supersized her fries and got a supersized diet coke.
My order used to be a Double Cheeseburger until she convinced me to try the Quarter Pounder done her way. Almost 20 years later, Im still eating my burger the same way!
During the Covid lockdown, McKenna begged us to go to McDonalds. Shes a teen that has been missing her friends and school, and we wanted to cheer her up. So, we drove 30 minutes to the nearest drive-thru. We even convinced John.e to order something. He had a Fillet-O-Fish combo, while we both had you guess it! Quarter Pounders!
Is Big Mac Sauce Thousand Island
While they may seem similar, they are not the same. If they were, do you think you would have people RAVING about thousand island dressing?
Here are the differences:
- Citrus. This sauce is full of savory flavors without adding the carbs from fresh fruit like lemon.
- Ketchup. This condiment can be full of carbs. Who wants that?
- Relish. It can also be full of sweeteners. Chop your own low carb pickles for this recipe.

Interestingly, when Big Mac sauce first appeared in the sixties, McDonald’s did not actually use one consistent recipe. As the restaurant group’s website explains, “there were two different versions of the McDonalds Special Sauce being used.
McDonald’s adds: “To eliminate inconsistency, a single recipe was developed that satisfied customers who had a taste for either one.”
This single recipe was actually changed again in 1991, before the version we know and love today took over in 2004. The fact that Big Mac sauce has survived all these tweaks and changes is a testament to its status as a stone-cold classic.
Big Mac sauce is relatively easy to recreate at home

Big Mac Sauce So Easy So Good
Copycat Big Mac Sauce is probably the main reason people buy the Bic Mac in the first place. Theres not really anything special about it. The meat is thin, the extra bun layer in the middle is just carbs. And, the lettuce is wilted by the time you eat it!
But, if you make Big Mac Sauce at home and prepare your own burger, you can make it even bigger and better. Most of the ingredients are probably already in your fridge or pantry! You dont need to chop anything or cook anything. Its a matter of whisking the ingredients together and thats it!
I highly recommend that you refrigerate the sauce for at least two hours or so before eating it. It just gives that ingredients time to marry together, which really just enhances the flavour. Its so good! I cant wait for you to try it!

Is Big Mac Sauce Vegan
Sadly for most plant-based McDonald’s fans, OG Big Mac sauce is not vegan.
This has less to do with the fact that it’s usually served slathered on top of a beef patty, and more to do with the inclusion of egg yolks on the ingredients list.
However, just because traditional Big Mac sauce isn’t vegan friendly, it doesn’t mean that there aren’t veggie alternatives available.
For instance, for our hugely popular giant vegan Big Mac dish made for X-Factor star James Arthur we made a Big Mac sauce with the following ingredients:
- ½ cup vegan mayonnaise
- 2 tbsp finely chopped white onions
- 2 tsp white vinegar
- Salt and pepper to taste
If you don’t want to go plant-based, you can simply substitute in regular mayo. However, whatever your preference, this recipe is a surefire way to recreate the classic Big Mac flavour.

Tips To Make This Sandwich Even More Unique
While I love this recipe as it is, you can try different ways to make it stand out even more.
One of the best things that you can do is toast the bun. I dont know why but a toasted bun makes any sandwich over the top delicious. Theres something about that crisp outer crust with the soft center paired up with the burger and ingredients that will have you longing for more.
Just be careful that you dont burn the bun because this is something that Im known for. I toast my buns on the stovetop with a bit of butter which produces a great flavor but you have to really watch so that you dont burn it.
And if you do burn it, you can just scrape off the burnt part with a butter knife carefullysuch an easy hack to know! All you have to do is hold the burnt bun over the sink and use the butter knife at an angle to slide across the bread. It will flake off the burnt part of the bread, saving it to still eat and enjoy!

Dubbed the “Big Mac Index,” the theory goes that you can detect exchange rates between countries by measuring the converted price of a Big Mac in each. For instance, if a Big Mac costs $4 in the U.S. and 2.5 pounds in the U.K., the expected exchange rate would be $1.60 to the pound .
Heat a small, lightly greased skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion & cook until fragrant, about 23 minutes. Add the beef and cook until fully browned. Mix together the dressing, vinegar and onion powder. To assemble: Top lettuce with the ground beef and sprinkle with cheese. Top with pickle slices.
There are pickles, onions, cheddar cheese, ground beef, and lots of spices. Then, for the dressing, I made my own version of a low-carb McDonalds Big Mac sauce. The Ingredients In The Secret Big Mac Sauce Aren’t That Secret Anymore
For years, McDonald’s protected the ingredients list of the Big Mac Special Sauce like a closely-guarded government secret. Although there is no shortage of copycat recipes available online, McDonald’s Executive Chef Dan Coudreaut demystified the process when he answered a customer-submitted question and made the sauce on YouTube in 2012. “Quite honestly,” he explains, “the ingredients have been available in the restaurant or… on the internet for many years, so it’s not really a secret.”
Coudreaut walks us through a version of the Big Mac sauce made with store-bought mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish, classic yellow mustard, white wine vinegar, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika for both color and flavor. Whisk it all together in a bowl and voila: homemade Special Sauce made with ingredients you can find at your grocery store. Unfortunately, Coudreaut didn’t provide measurements, and we’re not even sure how authentic this sauce really is. While a lot of the ingredients are similar to the ones listed on McDonald’s website, we’re missing quite a few things, like soybean oil, salt, sugar, turmeric, and unidentified “spices,” which surely contribute to that one-of-a-kind flavor.
