Taco Bell is bringing back the Naked Chicken Chalupa on May 20, the chain’s latest offering in the slate of chicken “sandwiches.”

The item – consisting of a crunchy fried chicken shell wrapped around lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, and avocado ranch sauce -was first introduced as a limited-time menu offering in 2017 after years of testing. That first launch was such a hit that Taco Bell brought it back the next year and launched several other fried chicken products.

In a 2018 taste test, Insider called it the chain’s “most controversial chalupa ever,”

Taco Bell menu items usually use ground beef or beans as protein, but it hasn’t shied away from testing chicken dishes. There was the Crispy Chicken Chickstar in 2015, followed by Naked Chicken Chips and Crispy Chicken Quesadilla following the unorthodox chalupa. Most recently, Taco Bell released the Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco in a few markets ahead of a nationwide release.

The Vegan Naked Chicken Chalupa

The naked chicken chalupa is a brand new menu item from Taco Bell! So new, you might have no idea it exists yet. And of course I HAD to make it vegan !

What on earth is a chalupa you ask? Well traditionally its fried or baked masa dough resembling more of a tostada-like thing, but this concoction is just borrowing the name and of course isnt much like its authentic origin. But I bet this is WAY more delicious, just sayin!

Naked Chicken Chalupa + Fries

Since the pure iteration of the Naked Chicken Chalupa is really just a glorified chicken sandwich without bread, I figured I should treat it as such.

So I popped over to McDonald’s, got some fries and threw them in the NCC.

And I gotta say, it was not as good as I wanted it to be. The taste of the fries was lost in the lettuce, tomatoes and cheese and the textures didn’t really mix.

A sad lesson to learn, but it was worth a shot.

So at the end of the day, the Naked Chicken Chalupa with a Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Taco was the best option if you’re looking for a wild combo that also tastes great. The only drawback is that the NCC shell isn’t big enough to completely cover a traditional hard taco, so the shell is more “naked” than the chicken chalupa is.

But if you’re looking for an easy way to shake up your NCC for the better, adding chips and queso will absolutely do the trick.

Either way, it seems like Taco Bell missed an opportunity here. And if they need a taste-tester or someone to invent crazy menu items that are better than this one, I volunteer as tribute.

What Is The Naked Chicken Chalupa 2021

First introduced in 2017, the Naked Chicken Chalupa features a taco shell made with all-white-meat chicken that is marinated in bold Mexican spices, rolled in a crunchy coating, and deep-fried until crispy and crunchy. Its filled with lettuce, cheddar cheese, diced tomatoes and avocado ranch sauce.

Check the chicken mixture to see if it has set then you want to dip it in the breading mixture. In a small bowl add the almond flour, nutritional yeast and cilantro. Mix well. The mixture will cling to the chicken but you can dip into an egg batter before dipping into the breading. After you get them all coated, bake them in 425 for 30 minutes or until golden brown. I baked the first half for 15 minutes then turned them over and get the other side golden brown. They will stay in that shape. I did fry the other half to see what happens and they do shrink a sizeable difference but still delicious just smaller. If you do fry , only a few at at time and put the rest in the freezer till you get to them. They will start defrosting and it will be hard to pick them up.

As of May 20, the Naked Chicken Chalupa is available at Taco Bell nationwide. However, all good things must come to an end , so the Naked Chicken Chalupas will only be on the Taco Bell menu for a limited time. If youre intrigued by the chicken shells, youll want to get to Taco Bell as soon as possible!

You can get it a la carte for $3.49 or a Crispy Chalupa Box for $5.99, which includes a Beef Burrito, Crunchy Taco and medium fountain drink. Dont forget to pair it with Taco Bells new Freeze!

Okay Then What Is A Vegan Naked Chicken Chalupa

Taking inspiration from Taco Bell, this vegan naked chicken chalupa is made with seitan chicken in a crunchy coating, pan-fried until golden and finished off with lettuce, diced tomatoes, and avocado aioli sauce.

I used Livs quick and easy seitan chicken recipe and used small chunks to roll out super flat. Then, they were breaded, fried and folded in half to make the chicken taco shell. Lastly, they were stuffed with lettuce and tomato and my own spin on a cashew avocado aioli.

Make The Shapes And Freeze It

Grab a tray and add parchment paper. Use a large cookie scooper and use a spoon to spread the mixture to make it a circle shape. It should be 3 to 4 inches big and 1/4 inch thin. If its too think then it wont fold properly and can break on you when you want to fold it. Freeze it for 30 minutes or until you are able to peel it off from the parchment paper.

I was actually under the impression that traditional taco beef was one of the ingredients in the Naked Chicken Chalupa, but I was mistaken.

So for my first creation, I threw in the beef, and also included some sour cream since the NCC does not have a “supreme” option yet another drawback.

These additions were definitely an improvement on the original, but it didn’t quite trigger the self-loathing I was looking for. I could probably eat a couple of these and feel very little guilt and zero regret.

That’s a positive thing in most cases, but this version still isn’t as off-the-wall as it should be.

And besides, it’s still missing something.

Beginning today, Naked Chicken Chalupa is available in two flavours including original recipe and a new Wild sauce.

Introduced initially as a limited time offering in January last year, the original flavour is a blend of all-white meat, crispy chicken shell, Mexican spices and seasoning, shredded lettuce, tomatoes, cheddar cheese and creamy avocado ranch sauce.

Wild sauce flavour is made using crispy fried chicken shell and fillings and topped with a smoky Wild sauce.

In addition, the restaurant chain is offering a trial version of a cheese variant, Nacho Cheese Naked Chicken Chalupa, for a limited period.

Nacho Cheese flavour is designed as cheese replacement for variant for the two spicy flavours currently available and is currently being tested in Cleveland, Ohio, US.

The Naked Chicken Chalupa original, wild and cheesy flavours are available at participating locations priced at $2.99 as well as in a $5 Box alongside a Doritos Locos Taco, a Crunchy Taco and a medium drink.

As mentioned several times in this column, the KFC Double Down was a watershed moment in modern fast food history. Taking bacon, two types of cheese and Colonels secret sauce, the chain forever changed the game by replacing the bread with fried chicken fillets.

In the ensuing chaos after its release, several hard questions were posed to the world, whether it wanted to deal with them or not: Is this actually a sandwich? Does a sandwich need bread of some sort to constitute that title? Wikipedia describes the Double Down as a pseudo-sandwich, but what does that really mean?

According to Taco Bell, that’s avocado ranch sauce on a ‘marinated all-white-meat chicken shell.’

Seven years after the Double Down’s debut, one of KFCs sister restaurants has seemingly stirred up this debate in a new way with the release of Taco Bells Naked Chicken Chalupa. Naked Chicken Chalupa + Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Taco Supreme

Folks, we have a winner.

I did the exact same thing as with the previous concoction, but the hard taco was a Doritos Locos Taco instead. I chose Cool Ranch because I thought it might help to cut some of the heat from the chicken shell.

My notion was exactly correct, but the Cool Ranch also helped to bring out a bit more of the avocado ranch sauce. I was never able to taste it before this combo, and it was really wonderful.

An added benefit of using Doritos Locos Tacos is that you have a few options. If you’re a sucker for all things spicy, the Firey option could work well for you. The Nacho would probably be downright gross, but that is also kind of the point here.

One of these things is definitely enough for anyone, and finishing it would have been an impressive feat. It’s wild, but also tasty and just mildly gross enough to make you want to talk about it a lot. So mission accomplished!

Even though the Naked Chicken Chalupa was already a thing, the culinary geniuses at Taco Bell have managed to both recycle and reintroduce the famed poultry pocket with a new spicy sauce to kick off their latest quarter of seasonal eats.

Basically Taco Bells version of KFCs million-plus selling Double-Down Sandwich, the Naked Chicken Chalupa takes a thoroughly processed and mechanically separated piece of fried chicken and flattens it to the consistency of a puffy tortilla, which, while wholly unnatural and naturally unholy, does form a solidly delicious wrap to contain those patented Taco Bell innards were so deeply accustomed to.

And since the original iteration of the Naked Chicken Chalupa itself has been broken down repeatedly and reviewed by both the poets and the analysts, theres no need for me to do it here. So, instead, lets talk about this versions newest addition, the wild in the Wild Naked Chicken Chalupathe crazed creamy additive with a momentary kick to end all kicks, at least in the Taco Bell universe.

Much like the aforementioned Volcano Sauce, this does lead me with the same question: why doesnt Taco Bell start offering a line of dipping sauces, much like McDs, for example? This Wild Sauce would go so good with Nacho Fries, Cheesy Roll-ups, and just about everything on the breakfast menu. But maybe thats just me. Cómpralo ya!
