D’italia Four Cheese Alfredo Sauce

It should probably come as no surprise that Bertolli’s two best pasta sauces are both Alfredo saucesand are from their D’Italia line. A fresh-tasting Alfredo sauce is hard to come by, but Bertolli really nails it with their D’Italia Four Cheese Alfredo Sauce. This sauce is like a standard Alfredo sauce, just with more cheese: Parmigiano Reggiano, Pecorino Romano, Fontal, and Gorgonzola, to be exact.

And people love it. “Tried this four cheese mix and it was amazing! Very creamy and tasty, and very easy to prepare. Instantly became our go-to alfredo sauce!” one person wrote. “This pasta sauce is so good! It tasted really authentic just like something you’d get at a restaurant,” another exclaimed. And while the cheesiness might not be for everyone, this sauce is top tier.

The Origin Of Alfredo Sauce

Bertolli Alfredo Sauce 15 oz

The origin of Alfredo sauce goes back to 1914 when Alfredo Di Lelio first created his Fettuccine Alfredo. Four years earlier, Alfredo had opened a restaurant in Rome, called Alfredos, on the Via Della Scrofa.

Alfredos son, Armando, had just been born, and the tired mother was left with no appetite. He tried several things, but the one thing that worked was when he created some fresh fettuccine swirled with Parmigiano and butter. She loved it and polished off the plate in quick double time.

The story goes that in 1920 Douglas Fairbanks Jr and Mary Pickford, who was honeymooning in Rome, dined at Alfredos restaurant and fell in love with this fettuccine dish.

So much that they dined there every day and later returned to the restaurant to present Alfredo with a gold-plated spoon on which was inscribed, to Alfredo the Noodle King, July 1927.

Vineyard Marinara With Merlot Wine Sauce

Because one kind of marinara sauce isn’t enough, Bertolli wanted to spice things up with their Vineyard Marinara with Merlot Wine Sauce. The sauce is basically your typical marinara sauce but has some red wine added into the mix. But can you taste it? Not really.

It tastes like your typical marinara sauce, so we wouldn’t go out of our way to pick it up from the store. In short, this is a very average marinara sauce, so don’t be fooled by the addition of “Merlot” in the title we were disappointed with this one, even though the overall flavor isn’t terrible.

Freshly Grated Parmigiano Reggiano

Parmigiano Reggiano, the name-protected Italian cheese, is a surefire way to add a umami and depth of flavor to a jarred Alfredo sauce.

Freshly grate a few inches of the cheese, then whisk it right into the sauce as itâs warming on the stove. For extra impact, grate some more Parmigiano Reggiano over each serving of pasta once youâve tossed the noodles with the sauce.

You can do this with other Italian hard cheeses as well, like Pecorino Romano, Grana Padano, or Asiago.

Directions For How To Make Jar Alfredo Sauce Better

Im sure there are plenty of ways to do this, but Ive found this to be the easiest way.

Feel free to switch out the ingredients to ones you prefer.

I believe that the best flavors are the ones you and your family like.

I also highly recommend choosing just a few of the above ingredients to test the first few times.

Pour the jar of Alfredo sauce into a medium saucepan and turn the burner to medium-high heat.

As soon as you see a couple of bubbles, turn it down to medium-low heat.

Now start adding the ingredients you like.

I highly recommend sautéing the onions if you choose chopped onions as one of the ingredients because that brings out the flavor.

I used all dried seasonings because thats what I had. But if you have access to fresh ingredients, I highly recommend using those.

My pepper mill is still packed , so I used already ground pepper.

Fresh ground pepper is much better. Or you can use white pepper.

I added chopped chicken that I cooked earlier to make chicken Alfredo.

If you dont have fresh cooked chicken, you can use the canned version.

After its added to the cream sauce with the other ingredients, you probably wont be able to tell the difference.

When Im in the mood for seafood, I might use either shrimp or scallops instead of chicken. Both are good. Try using a variety of different proteins to see which ones you like.

As you add ingredients, you may want to turn the burner up to medium heat to keep the sauce hot.

  • Organic Five Cheese Sauce

Another seemingly “healthier” version of Bertolli’s pasta sauce is their Organic Five Cheese Sauce. This is basically just like their other five cheese sauce, but it’s made with organic ingredients. And honestly, it tastes about the same. But that’s not a bad thing! The sauce is pretty good, just not amazing.

While this sauce has a good consistency and plenty of cheese, we feel like it’s missing out on some of the other flavors, so you may have to add some to your pan before you pour it over your pasta. However, it’s definitely a solid option when you don’t want to have to make your sauce from scratch. For an organic version of their cheese sauce, you can’t go wrong with this one.

Parmesan & Romano With Cracked Black Pepper Sauce

Taking their red sauce to the next level, Bertolli came out with their Parmesan & Romano with Cracked Black Pepper Sauce. This tomato sauce features cheese and black pepper as flavor additions, but there seem to be some inconsistencies when it comes to how much people like the sauce.

“A great pair with chicken breast and pasta. It was flavorful without being overpowering,” one person explained. “Overall, it was a very bland tomato-based pasta sauce which was impossible to differentiate from others,” stated another review. If you are someone who doesn’t mind a more bland sauce, you might enjoy this one. But if you’re expecting a ton of flavor and love black pepper, then this sauce will only disappoint you.
