Sloppy Joes: A Cuban Specialty

Manwich Bourbon BBQ Sloppy Joe Sauce Review

Sloppy Joes Bar in Key West, Florida, opened on December 5, 1933, the day Prohibition was lifted, and if there is one eatery that has come to be associated with the sandwich, it is that establishment.

The pub was originally opened under a different name, and Ernest Hemingway himself urged changing the name to Sloppy Joes. But it was unrelated to sandwiches in any way. No, the Havana Club, which sold alcoholic beverages and ice-cold seafood, was the source of the term.

Customers called this Spanish Joe a sloppy spot since the floor was constantly wet from melting ice, according to Donna Edwards, Sloppy Joes Brand Manager.

The name endured.

But why do so many customers at Sloppy Joes choose to order a Sloppy Joe? While some claim the Sioux City chef is to blame, we must not ignore the Cuban connection.

According to Edwards, the original Sloppy Joes in Havana served a loose beef sandwich.

Regardless, Sloppy Joes in Key West has been offering the sandwich ever since it opened, and it now sells more than 50,000 of them annually.

Need To Know How Much To Make

When cooking for a crowd, it can be hard to figure out how much food to purchase especially meat!

This recipe makes six good-sized sandwiches. So, if you need to make sloppy joes for 50, youll need to multiply the recipe by 8 and buy 8 pounds of ground meat.

One good rule of thumb is is to estimate about 2 and a half ounces of raw meat per person when dealing with ground meat.

Manwich Sloppy Joe Recipe

The classic sloppy Joe, as we know it today, is mostly associated with Manwich, but it was actually born from Loose Meat Sandwiches, popular in Iowa. It is said that a cook, appropriately named Joe, added tomato sauce to a loose meat sandwich, and a new classic was born!

This homemade sloppy Joes recipe recreates much of what I love about Manwich, while taking these classic sandwiches to the next level! The sauce bursts with a deeper, richer, flavor that I absolutely love! Most importantly, you probably have all of the ingredients for it already in your kitchen!

Plus, lets be honest, we all feel a bit lazy dumping Manwich from a can and calling it dinner. If you make my homemade Manwich recipe, it not only tastes better, but you get the satisfaction of making something from scratch!

You can freeze them in a freezer bag. Then reheat in a crockpot or in a pan for an even faster dinner idea! Try sloppy joe recipe slow cooker version and come home to dinner ready to enjoy! This is great for reheating what you put in the freezer and makes dinner so simple.

Serving And Topping Suggestions

Want to make this recipe super special? Make a sloppy joe bar! It’s the perfect way to dress up these basic sandwiches and makes a fun and easy dinner for a crowd. Here are some of my favorite toppings:

  • Thinly sliced red onion
  • French-fried onions
  • Sliced Cheese- cheddar, pepper jack, muenster, American

Pro Tips For Making Homemade Sloppy Joes:

  • Before you get started, toast your buns. Toasting the bun makes ALL the difference, and only takes a few minutes. Crank up the heat under the skillet to high, and add a drizzle of vegetable oil. When the oil is hot, add the buns, then place the buns cut side up on a cooling rack after theyre toasted.
  • Watch the sauce so that it doesnt reduce too much. When too much of the sauce reduces, it gives you a dry sloppy joe mixture. Everyone likes theirs a little differently, but for me, I cook it down so that I can see the bits of meat, and when I drag my spoon through the sauce, it leaves a trail where the sauce is parted. If the sauce immediately flows back into that trail, its too liquid-y. I want a few seconds before the sauce covers the trail, which gives me a saucy consistency thats not too liquid.
  • Choose your favorite type of bun. I usually go for either a pretzel bun , or a brioche bun.

Homemade Sloppy Joe Sauce

We have one sloppy Joe recipe up but the sauce isnt homemade and as decadent as this one! Add this to your ground turkey, chicken or beef! We enjoyed this on a Daves Killer Brand bun like a burger and over a bed of mashed sweet potatoes but it could even be eaten alone for a lower carb option and still be delicious! Pair with a side of roasted veggies or side salad!

Enjoy!

  • Sautee onion & garlic over medium-high heat in a small amount of oil
  • Add your protein until browned
  • Combine canned tomatoes with the rest of the spices and ingredients
  • pour over meat and let simmer for 10 minutes

Weigh your entire batch of sauce and divide by number of ounces to get per-ounce macros.

What Can I Put In The Manwich In A Can

THE MEAT: Ground beef is one of the traditional Sloppy Joe ingredients, but you can also use leftover chicken, turkey, sliced sausages, or even tofu cubes in this recipe!

THE VEGETABLES: Bell peppers, tomatoes, and onions give Manwich sauce a savory flavor. For an added nutritional boost, this is also a fantastic way to use up excess vegetables like potatoes, corn, or even mushrooms!

THE BUNS: For the ideal handheld serving, traditional Sloppy Joes are put on hamburger buns. Similar to hamburger buns in texture, sub sandwich rolls are wider and more open-faced to accommodate additional toppings. Kids can make terrific handheld Sloppy Joes out of hot dog buns with minimal mess!

ADD-ONS: Create a homemade sloppy joe bar and arrange a selection of toppings in tiny bowls, including shredded mozzarella cheese, sliced black olives, Instant Pot pickled jalapenos, chopped onions, a tangy creamy coleslaw, and a dollop of sour cream.

Are Manwich And Sloppy Joe Interchangeable Terms

A cook named Joe invented sloppy joes in Sioux City, Iowa in the 1930s. It was common for casual lunch counter eateries to provide loose-meat sandwiches, which were notorious for being messy and sloppy to eat. Nonetheless, really tasty!

Yes! Set the Instant Pot to saute mode and follow the recipes instructions. When its time to simmer the sauce, add 1/2 cup water, secure the Instant Pot cover while making sure the venting valve is sealed, and set the timer for 5 minutes on high pressure.

After the allotted cooking time has passed, give the pressure a five-minute natural release before carefully opening the venting valve to let out the residual pressure.

Remove the cover and stir once the pressure pin has dropped. If the sauce is thin, you can switch to saute mode and let it boil until it reaches the right consistency for you.

To prepare this dish in a slow cooker, brown the meat with the onion, remove the oil, and then toss in the additional ingredients for the sloppy joe sauce.

Cook for at least one hour on high or for two hours on low. If youd like, you can leave it in there for longer.

The marketed brand of sloppy joe sauce that you can buy at the supermarket is called Manwich. Sloppy Joes are supposed to be simple to make, but in reality, they are simple to make even without a can of sauce!

With good results, Ive made this recipe with low-carb ketchup and monk fruit sweetener. Use the same quantity of ketchup and add your preferred sweetener to taste.

What Is The Difference Between A Sloppy Joe And Manwich

Del Monte Sloppy Joe Sauce Original 15 Oz (Pack of 6)

Manwich is the brand name of a canned seasoned sloppy joe sauce. It came to market in 1969 and was pitched as a quick, easy meal for the entire family, because you simply add it to cooked ground beef in a skillet. Ive actually never had it, so I cant compare my recipe to that sauce. But I do know that anything from scratch is going to be better than anything from a can.

The thing is, homemade Sloppy Joes are just as easy, so why not go with real ingredients and an end result that will taste amazing!

Why This Recipe Works

The tricky part about sloppy joe sauce is balancing the flavors. It should be sweet and tangy but still let the flavor of the meat shine through. This recipe has a perfect blend of those sweet and tangy notes and an additional depth of flavor created by adding diced green chiles and Worcestershire sauce for a perfectly balanced taste.

Why Are Sloppy Joes Called Sloppy Joes

There are many origin stories of the sloppy joe. One is that it was born in 1918 at a bar in Havana, Cuba, owned by José Abeal y Otero. He changed the name of his establishment after his American friends gave him the nickname Sloppy Joe. He had sandwiches on his menu, but they werent much like the sloppy joes we enjoy today.

Another story goes that a second Sloppy Joes Bar was christened in 1933 in Key West, Florida. Legend has it that Ernest Hemingway was a regular at the bar, and suggested that the owner rename it after the popular bar in Cuba. This is where the sandwich was crafted into the more recognizable version we know today.

Most people, however, believe that sloppy joes appeared first in the 20s from a cook at Ye Old Tavern in Sioux City, Iowa, by the name of Joe. He combined tomato sauce with seasoned ground beef in a loose meat sandwich, and the first recipe for how to make sloppy joes was created.

While the master chef behind this beloved sandwich is still up for debate, the most important fact remainsthey are so good to eat.

Does Manwich Still Get Made

Manwich bold sloppy Joe sauce

The brand name for a canned sloppy joe sauce made by ConAgra Foods and Hunts and released in 1969 is Manwich, a combination of the words man and sandwich. A sandwich is a sandwich, but a Manwich is a meal, reads the companys motto.
