MassLive is on a quest to find the best hot dog in Massachusetts. After reader nominations and votes narrowed it down to the top 10 hot dog joints in the state, our pair of judges set out to wolf down every dog on the list until a winner emerges.

Day 2 of judging had the judging crew checking out the Eastern part of the state — but not too East. None of the hot dog joints in Boston, the Cape and the South Shore made the cut. Instead, we stopped at:

• Hot Dog Annie’s, Leicester
• Lee’s Hot Dog Stand, Baldwinville

Here’s a look at the Eastern Mass. finalists and what they brought to the table.

Stop No. 1: Hot Dog Annie’s, Leicester

The best thing about doing a contest about hot dog stands is that the attention gets shifted away from the cities and the normal foodie hubs. Not all the great food in Massachusetts is in Boston. Sometimes, you need to take a short hop out from Worcester to find a hidden gem like this out in Leicester.

Hot Dog Annie’s a small, efficient hot dog stand with ample outdoor seating, the ideal sort of place to visit during the summer, when it’s hot out.

It’s one thing that they have good hot dogs. But it always helps when the scenery is just as good.

How much for a hot dog? $1.70

While not as cheap as some of the Berkshire baby dogs we had on Day 1, Hot Dog Annie’s gives as much bang for your hot dog buck as you’ll get.

And yes, you’re going to want to shell out that extra $0.20 for the BBQ hot dog.

I love simple meals especially in the summer since the kids are home for all three meals. I try to make something fun, so these Easy Pretzel Hot Dogs are one of my fun lunches that the kids love, especially my son Madden. I will have to admit I sort of like them too!

Now while they seriously would eat any sort of hot dogs, I, on the other hand, am very picky about what kind of hot dog Ill eat.

For me all-beef hot dogs are the only way to go unless of course, I am at the ballpark then it doesnt seem to matter what kind of hot dog they serve, they are always delicious.

My son Madden is currently obsessed with my neighbor Jamies Chili and Cheese Hot Dogs. I recently called her for the recipe and she literally couldnt stop laughing.

This sauce is sweet, spicy, and I have yet to find something it doesn’t taste wonderful slathered all over. And the extra flavor from the apple butter gives it just the extra boost to make it absolutely wonderful.

Steps:

• Heat the barbeque sauce, both steak sauces, apple butter, onion, jalapeno pepper , garlic, Worcestershire sauce, liquid smoke, grill seasoning, allspice, cloves, salt, and black pepper in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook and stir until mixture is warmed through, then reduce heat to low and cook until onions are translucent, about 4 to 5 minutes more.
• Reserve 2/3 to 1 cup of the sauce to use for dipping, while the remaining sauce can be used to baste while grilling.

I have read article after article online about traditional coney island hot dogs, and I am convinced that no one will ever agree on what a true coney island hot dog recipe is. And thats ok by me. Ive never been to Coney Island, and Ive never had an authentic coney island hot dog. And I find it funny that it doesnt seem like they even originated on Coney Island but from Greek and Macedonian immigrants in Michigan.

One thing that everyone will agree on, though, is something that sets a coney island hot dog apart from a chili dog the sauce is an all meat sauce. No beans.

I do love a good chili dog but you wont find that same sauce on a coney dog.

Another thing that distinguishes a coney dog is serving it topped with onions and mustard.
