    How I Serve Heinz Beans

Heinz beans are amazingly versatile. All that is required is to heat them up either in the microwave or on the stove top. We like to eat them plain as a side for when we have turkey burgers without the mushroom cream sauce or with British sausage rolls. For breakfast, they are amazing when served with British sausage.

When we want the ultimate in simplicity and comfort food we have beans on toast. This may sound odd to Americans, but is absolutely delicious.

Sometimes, we do as the British do and have a jacket potato loaded with the Heinz beans. This may also sound odd to Americans. However its absolutely delicious.

This recipe for Heinz Beans is about as close to the real thing as I can possibly imagine. If youre a fan of this British staple, you should definitely give the recipe a try. Yum!

Dried Beans Are Best For Baked Beans

Everyone loves good baked beans. They really go with just about anything and good homemade baked beans start with dried beans, not canned. Dried beans just have better texture. If you used canned for this recipe they would be mush by the end of the recipe. Dried beans are best for baked beans, but I wont be mad at you if you used pre-cooked canned.

Below I am answering one of the biggest question I have had when cooking dried beans.

Why are my beans hard and wont cook?

This is the most common issue that readers have had and it is all to do with the beans. Ive had some be almost mushy in 30 minutes and some take almost 2 hours. You just have to keep testing them as they boil. There are no hard-and- fast rules as to why dried beans take longer to cook because it seems every batch of beans are different . A few reasons could be, they are old beans. You cant be sure how old they are, even if they are within their expiration date. You have hard water. Hard water can toughen the skins. You didnt soak long enough. 8-12 hours is optimal but no more than 24.

    Possible solutions:

    • Use bottled or distilled water to soak.
    • Allow enough time to soak the dried beans. This helps them soften and cook faster.
    • Add 1 teaspoon of baking soda per cup of beans to the soaking water, this may not always work.

    Finishing The Heinz Beans

Heinz Baked Beans In Tomato Sauce 415g

Once I had whisked together the sauce ingredients, I added the cooked beans to the Dutch oven. I stirred everything together and set the Dutch oven over medium heat.

After the mixture came to a slow boil, I reduced the heat to medium low and cooked the beans uncovered for about 20 minutes.

After 20 minutes, a poured in a slurry of cornstarch and water. I stirred the beans constantly until they had thickened.

The transformation was amazing. Before my very eyes, the soupy, nondescript mixture turned into thick tomato coated beans that looked just like the Heinz beans! I let the beans cook for about five more minutes before removing them from the heat.

    Heinz Baked Beans Recipe

So theres no misunderstanding, let me explain upfront that this recipe is for British style baked beans which comes in a semi-clear tomato sauce and is traditionally served for breakfast. Its completely different to Southern Baked Beans which is a Southern food staple and comes with a darker, more intense flavoured sweet/savoury sauce.

Specifically, this recipe today is a copycat of Heinz baked beans. A British export, firmly adopted by Aussies as a breakfast-lunch-dinner staple.

Crack open a can, tip it over toast and microwave that was the standard method.

Heating it up in a saucepan was the posh method. Add a slice of cheese now that was getting real fancy!

I think we have the evolution of cooking shows and rise and rise of the internet to thank for the discovery of homemade versions of canned food favourites. And for me, homemade baked beans was one of the greatest eye openers. How simple it is. And how much tastier it is.

And as someone who always had an issue with the sliminess of the Heinz baked beans sauce, discovering homemade baked beans was revolutionary!

    Chicken Vs Vegetable Stock/broth

Chicken stock gives the sauce a better flavour because it has more complex flavours than vegetable stock because its made from meat. It doesnt make this dish taste chicken-like or meaty once cooked.

However, vegetable stock does work fine but for best results, I recommend using homemade vegetable stock .

    Canned Vs Dried Beans

You can make this baked beans recipe with dried or canned beans. The base recipe uses dried beans because:

  • you cant get canned navy beans / haricot beans here in Australia, you can only get dried and

  • cooked dried beans taste better, and you can control the texture. Canned beans are always bloated from sitting in liquid, so theyre on the soft side.

    Ingredients: Heres What Youll Need

    • The Beans: While different beans can be used, my choice was the dried Navy bean, known as the haricot bean in other countries. This is the bean that is used to actually make the Heinz beans.
    • The Liquid: The liquid noted on the Heinz can is water. However, I used a combination of chicken broth and water. I also included some Worcestershire sauce and cider vinegar.
    • Tomato: I used two types of tomato products: Ketchup and Tomato Paste.
    • The Spices: For the spices, I used garlic powder, onion powder, Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper.
    • The Sweetener: My sweetener of choice was light brown sugar.
    • The Magic Ingredient: Towards the end of cooking, the beans needed a thickener to produce the telltale sauce. I used none other than cornstarch for this.
