    About This Homemade Spaghetti Sauce

I use four different forms of canned tomatoes to make this homemade spaghetti sauce: tomato paste, crushed tomatoes with their juice, tomato sauce, and diced tomatoes with their juice.

Although homemade spaghetti sauce requires a nice long simmer on the stove, most of that time is hands-off. You could also use a slow cooker to simmer the spaghetti sauce on low for 8 hours.

Why bother making homemade when you can buy a jar of sauce at the grocery store? Once you taste this sauce, youll know the answer to that question! Anything thats freshly made beats canned by a long shot. Plus you can be confident in knowing that the sauce you make is preservative and additive free, and made with love.

Listen for the Grazie thats sure to come your way. The correct response to that is Prego!.

    Transfer Cooked Pasta To Sauce

There are a couple of ways to get your pasta from the pan to the sauce. The easiest is to grab a set of tongs for long, skinny pasta, or a metal spider to fish out short pasta shapes, and transfer them directly to the pan with the warm sauce. Alternatively, you can drain your pasta through a colander or fine-mesh strainer, making sure to save some of the pasta water.

How To Make This Spaghetti Sauce Your Own

    • If you have a garden full of tomatoes, thats wonderful! You can easily substitute peeled fresh tomatoes for the crushed and diced tomatoes. Roma tomatoes or another meaty variety work best. Youll need about four pounds.
    • Add more veggies: Chopped bell peppers or mushrooms can be added. Sauté them with the onions. Or stir in a few handfuls of baby spinach right before serving.
    • I like to serve this sauce with homemade meatballs or baked turkey meatballs. Frozen meatballs are so handy. Just add them to the sauce about halfway through the simmering time so they get heated through.
    • If you would like to make a spaghetti sauce with meat, sauté ground beef or turkey, or Italian sausage with the onions, and then continue the recipe as directed.
    • If you happen to have a rind of Parmesan cheese, put that in the sauce as it simmers to enhance the flavor.
    • Make this sauce vegan or Whole30 simply by omitting the butter and sugar.
    • Dont have any fresh herbs? Simply add a tablespoon of dried basil and parsley instead.
    • If you prefer a sauce made without tomatoes, maybe this isnt the recipe for you. Try this creamy chicken spaghetti or chicken Marsala pasta.

I set out to make my own spaghetti sauce a few years ago and was pleasantly surprised by how simple it was. Ive been making it this way ever since!

Its almost as easy as using the store-bought kind. It really is! Especially because even when I was purchasing a ready made sauce I found myself adding extra herbs and seasonings to make it even better.

To make this sauce youll brown your ground turkey or beef. Then add in canned crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, water, garlic, and seasonings. Let it all simmer together for about 10 to 15 minutes or until its all heated through and your flavors have had time to marry together. Thats it! It really is so simple but tastes incredible!

The ingredients are simple. I dont even include sautéed onion or bell peppers because I want even the small children to love it. I assure you this sauce has tons of big flavor without them!

Serve over your favorite pasta, spaghetti squash , or zoodles. You can even add it to the top of roasted veggies for a satisfying but light meal!
