Hot Ones The Last Dab Scoville Units Vs Reality

Everything You Need to Know About The Last Dab, the Hottest Sauce on Hot Ones

The Last Dab has 2 million-plus Scoville units, comparable to some pepper sprays. Serious stuff, right? Hot Ones guests seem to think so. Some who bought the sauce, though, have been less impressed. Reviews of The Last Dab mention how tasty it is its made with mustard, ginger root, coriander, and turmeric, and the flavor profile includes hints of chocolate and peach as well as pepper. Still, not everyone agrees with Heatonists claim that the sauce rates 11 out of 10 for hotness. Reviews on the product page include comments such as If youre accustomed to hot sauces, this wont blow your face off with heat, upper medium heat with a few spikes here and there, this stuff honestly isnt that hot, and Ive experienced hotter jalapenos. Underwhelming if thats all PepperX has to offer.

A Reddit thread about The Last Dab came to a similar consensus, finding the sauce to be delicious but only moderately hot. One possible explanation put forward was that The Last Dab gets its heat from actual peppers, whereas some of the hot-enough-to-cause-real-pain sauces are made with pepper extracts. Extract-based sauces may not have the same high Scoville count, but pepper extract is, as one Redditor put it, like napalm. It sticks to your mouth. Whether or not you find The Last Dab all that hot, if you manage to taste it without whimpering, then youve survived the worst that Hot Ones can dish out.

Perhaps designed to give celebrity guests a little break, this one doesnt offer a huge jump from the previous one or might even be less spicy. The dark red-coloured hot sauce uses a small selection of ingredients to light up your senses. At the heart of it is scorpion chile and red peppers, along with salt, sugar, and cider vinegar.

Its a good complement to pasta sauces, to dip French fries or nachos, or dot onto fried chicken for a nice kick of heat and flavour.

What Is Pepper X

Pepper X is a creation of Ed Currie out in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Ed Currie and his company Puckerbutt Pepper Company are world famous for creating the hottest peppers on the planet. His previous record holder, the Carolina Reaper, has an average of 1,569,300 Scoville units.

In a Today article highlighting Pepper X, Currie gave some background on his latest creation. Currie originally was looking to create a pepper with specific cancer fighting, sub-capsinoids. Sub-capsinoids are substances found in chili peppers that are chemically similar in structure to capsaicin, the compound that gives chili peppers their heat.

Through crossbreeding various peppers, he said, Our geneticists believe we stumbled upon the right mixture of genes to increase capsaicin production. The pepper took over 10 years to cultivate and comes in a variety of colors ranging from yellow, orange, off-green, and chocolatey brown.

At this time, Currie has not disclosed which peppers were crossbred to create Pepper X. We can speculate, based upon its similarly gnarled blistered appearance to the Carolina Reaper, similar pepper species may have been used. The Carolina Reaper was created through crossbreeding a La Soufriere pepper from St. Vincent and a Naga Viper pepper from Pakistan.

Currie did say in a Hot Ones interview, When we started the cross there were two peppers I really loved the flavor of but neither of them were going to be hot enough for my taste.

Fine. The majority of the heat in peppers comes from two parts of the pepper: the seeds and the ribs.

I know you know what seeds look like, but the ribs of a pepper are the white part that the seeds are attached to. If you cut those parts out of the pepper, youll reduce the heat immensely.

Another way to reduce the heat is to use bell peppers in place of some of the chili peppers.

Why I Like This Recipe

The Last Dab Pepper X sauce The Hot Ones First We Feast Review

Okay, so, historically, hot sauce has not been my thing. I don’t love spicy food. I prefer to, you know, actually taste my food, not cry through it while chugging glasses of milk to stop the inside of my mouth from blistering.

So when Jimmy decided he was going to start making his own hot sauces I was interested in the process, but kinda bummed that I wouldn’t reap any of the rewards.

But this homemade hot sauce? This hot sauce I actually like. And not just because of how easy it is to control just how hot it is. It’s all about the flavor of the sauce, not so much about burning your face off.

I asked Jimmy to write up his hot sauce recipe so I could share it with you, and it’s your lucky day! He’s given me all his best tips, tricks, and advice. So let’s dive in.

How Much Is The Last Dab Reduxx

The Last Dab Redux is $20 for one 5oz bottle, and while this may seem a little expensive, its actually a great value. This is because its so potent and flavorful that you need to use far less of it to achieve amazing results.

This makes it much more economical than weaker sauces, meaning it can last many months depending on how hot you like your food and how liberally you apply the sauce!

About The Last Dab Triple X

The Last Dab Triple X is the third iteration of the Last Dab, which has been a fan favorite of the YouTube show Hot Ones, hosted by Sean Evans that get progressively more spicy). This hot sauces name comes from the tradition of adding a little extra dab of hot sauce to the final wing.

The Last Dab made its debut in 2017 for season four of Hot Ones. This was also the debut and the reveal party for the new horticultural creation of Ed Currie, Pepper X. The Last Dab Triple X only made its debut in season 10 .

Reactions to The Last Dab Triple X have been positive. It is an extremely spicy hot sauce so a small amount, or dab, goes pretty far. It is one of those sauces where there is a tipping point: add a little and you enjoy a very spicy but manageable burn, but add too much and your mouth becomes overwhelmed and a physiological overload begins to take place.

Hot Ones The Last Dab: Reaper Edition Review

This is supposedly one of the hottest sauces that you can buy that doesnt use extracts. This is actually the second The Last Dab sauce that I have tried. I previously had a fingertip of Scorpion Pepper edition .

The two Last Dab sauces taste a little similar, but mostly they taste hot. Theres a small burst of flavor thats bright and fragrant, and then hot, hot, hot. And it builds a little for a bit before it starts to go down. And it definitely lasts. This will be on your palate for quite a while.

If you are looking for extreme flavor and heat, this is for youBut not for me.

Suggested dishes: Hard to say, as usual for these super-hot sauces. The person that I donated it to put it on tacos and said it was amazing.

Spiciness And Scoville Rating

Buy Hot Ones

This sauce is incredibly spicy, theres no escaping that fact. The Last Dab Redux has a minimum Scoville rating of 2 million SHUs, but this can sometimes be even higher, so this puts it at the extreme end of the hot sauce world and is certainly not one for the faint of heart.

The peppers used in this sauce are known as Pepper X, which are made by the same man who created the notorious Carolina Reaper. That man is Ed Currie, and his wealth of experience has packed over 3 million Scoville units into Pepper X peppers, which is why The Last Dab is so hot.

The beauty of this sauce is that while its got the heat for people who do want to challenge themselves, it is quite manageable in smaller doses. The heat does tend to build up slowly and can overwhelm people who arent cautious, so its best to take it slowly and have some milk ready to cut the heat if the heat starts to become uncomfortable.

This is important to note because the sauce is genuinely flavorful and its easy to forget on first tasting how much heat youll eventually have to deal with.

All natural, this sauce has a tropical pineapple taste, which will add a nice zing to your wings or other foods. It also contains white vinegar, onion, garlic, turmeric, salt, cumin, black pepper, and ginger. The real heat, however, comes from, as the name implies, habaneros as well as jalapenos.

While its sweeter than other hot sauces, some fans will especially love that its low sodium and gluten-free. Its also an option, for particularly daring individuals, to use as a tangy salad dressing with a kick.

Packs some heat, but lacks some flavor

If you’re craving some heat, then this will sort you out. However I found the flavors to be lacking and I don’t think I would reach for it besides the novelty. The heat wasn’t too bad in my opinion, but perhaps I have a higher tolerance.

The Best Blender For Hot Sauce

The more powerful your blender is, the smoother your hot sauce will be. I use my Vitamix 5200 which can liquify just about anything.

If you have a less powerful blender, you may need to let it blend for longer to get a smooth texture. And I don’t recommend using an immersion blender for this.

Regardless of what blender you use, you’ll still want to push the hot sauce through a wire mesh strainer before bottling!

Hot Ones Classic Scoville & Spiciness

THE LAST DAB APOLLO! | Hottest sauce on the planet?

Hot Ones Classic is not overly spicy. It wont be any good to challenge your friends to taste a tiny dab of super spicy sauce . It lives in the first spot on Hot Ones for a reason: it isnt very spicy. That isnt to say it doesnt have any kick.

Heat: 5/5 Extremely spicy without the chemical burn of pepper extract-based hot sauces.

Flavor: 3/5 Pleasant flavor, but this sauce is mostly about the heat.

Value: 4/5 A little goes a long way so it will last you a long time.

Versatility: 3/5 It is extremely hot so maybe not something you would use daily, but it does work well with a wide variety of foods.

Practical Tips & Recipe Notes

  • Taste whatever peppers you’re using before making your hot sauce so you have some sense of their flavor and level of heat. Sometimes even peppers you’re familiar with can surprise you! A few years ago we grew jalapeños in our Aerogarden and learned the hard way that peppers grown in a hydroponic garden are a thousand times hotter than grocery store jalapeños.
  • HAVE I MENTIONED ENOUGH YET TO WEAR KITCHEN GLOVES WHILE HANDLING HOT PEPPERS? HEED THIS WARNING, PLEASE, I BEG YOU.
  • If you don’t have a blender, a powerful food processor can probably get the job done, though I haven’t personally tried it. You’ll want to pause to scrape down the sides of the bowl several times and will probably have to let it run for a longer time.
