A marinade is a wet mixture of herbs, oil and acid used to flavor meat. The combination of ingredients tenderizes meat and makes it more flavorful. There are hundreds of marinade recipes, but spicy and sweet flavors make for the best ribs. Prepare the ribs first by defrosting them, removing the membrane, and rinsing them. Then whip up a steakhouse, Asian-inspired, or coffee-molasses marinade and cook the ribs. Make sure you plan ahead thoughfor the best results, you’ll want to marinate ribs overnight.

Kansas City Style Barbecue Sauce Recipe

Serve with: a local Kansas City beer.

Optional. If you are cooking indoors, or if your meat does not have a lot of smoke flavor, or if you just want more smoke flavor, you can add 1/3 cup of liquid smoke to this recipe.About the vinegar. I like my sauce tart. Trust me, although it may taste tart from the bottle, it is perfect on meat. If you are not big on vinegar, cut it in half.About the honey. The recipe above is to my taste but I have found that most people like it better if I add another 1/2 cup of honey for a total of 3/4 cups.About the steak sauce. There are many different brands and they all have different flavor profiles, but what we want here is the meaty depth of savoriness that they call umami, so use whatever you have on hand.About the hot sauce. A simple sauce like Tabasco is all you need. I like the chipotle flavored version.About the oil. You may use butter or bacon fat for a bit more flavor, but keep in mind, they can get rancid with time, and they will likely shorten shelf life to about 1 week. Use a bottled vegetable oil and it can keep months.About the salt. Remember, kosher salt is half the concentration of table salt so if you use table salt, use half as much. .

Teriyaki Japanese Hawaiian And Korean

Theres a whole world of barbecue sauces that dont fit into the above four categories, many of which take inspiration from the barbecue traditions of other cultures. Teriyaki sauce, for example, leads with high concentrations of sugar, sometimes pineapple and citrus, honey, soy sauce, and ginger. Hawaiian barbecue sauce is ultrasweet with high acidity. And Im a sucker for Korean barbecue sauce, which can have a high sugar content but is loaded with green onion, ginger, onion, black pepper, and sesame oil.

Sauces to try:

  • Bachans: The Original Japanese Barbecue Sauce has been perfected over generations and is a craveable sauce full of umami. Widely available online, it has a blend of ginger, garlic, rice vinegar, mirin, and toasted sesame oil. I want to drown a pulled-pork bao bun with this sauce.
  • Kraft Sweet Teriyaki Barbecue Sauce:With notes of ginger and sesame, this one would be great on a seared hot dog.
  • CJ Korean BBQ Original Sauce, Kalbi:This is a fantastic marinade sauce for any meat. The sweet, tangy, umami flavor transports you to authentic Korean barbecue. This sauce with charred ribs and topped with sesame seeds will turn your barbecue table spread into an unforgettable meal.

Cant Decide Here Are Some Tips To Help You

Kick Up the Heat In This Savory Rib Sauce

Although we cant all agree on who makes the best store-bought BBQ sauce, the products in our list are certainly some of the top contenders.

Some prefer sweeter sauce while others want to taste the tomato, so here are some of the flavors you should be paying attention to as you taste to help you choose the right one for your food and your taste buds.

  • Smoke. If you like a nice woody flavor, then hickory or mesquite recipes are a great choice. Many use liquid smoke to achieve this flavor, so if you find that the one you choose is too sweet or tangy and you have some liquid smoke around, try adding a few drops to balance the flavors.
  • Tang. The tang in the sauce stems from the vinegar used, so if you find that it is too tangy, you can try adding a bit of sugar in to help neutralize the tang.
  • Sweet. High fructose corn syrup is unbelievably sweet, and when you add in ketchup and additional sugar, it can make a sauce recipe excessively sweet.

Want to tone it down? Try adding some apple cider vinegar and spices to help.

  • Spicy. Most of the original BBQ recipes arent very spicy, so if youre looking for something with more of a kick.
  • Tomato. Ketchup is one of the key ingredients to a BBQ sauce, which means that tomatoes are, too!

Just remember that ketchup has sugar in it, so if you find that a sauce is too sweet, then the combination of ketchup and added sugar has probably rendered it so.

Sweet Baby Ray’s

The spice hits immediately with this one, then progressively gets stronger. It’s balanced with both a sweet and sour background. Though not particularly unique in flavor profile, it’s what we’ve always thought of as “barbecue sauce,” at least in the world of supermarket varieties. If you want something to have that ubiquitous “barbecue” flavor then this one’s for you.

KC Masterpiece

Lots of dark molasses with a hint of maple. Thick and sweet to be sure, but not enough tang or heat. “Reminiscent of hoisin sauce,” said one taster. Though it wasn’t all that special, it scored pretty well because it was familiar for many of us, much like Bulls-Eye.

Guy Fieri

And here you thought he just had his own signature line of shades! Fieri is a pretty busy guy . Of his four sauces available, we tried the Kansas City barbecue sauce. It’s pretty one-dimensional with a black pepper kick and a heavy hand of molasses. “Not a lotta complexity,” said one taster.

Trader Joe’s All-Natural

As noted above, if you’re at TJ’s and shopping for barbecue sauce, this isn’t the one. You want the Kansas City style sauce, which tied for first place in this category. This product, on the other hand, is trying to burn your mouth off. Don’t get us wrong, we like a good mouth sizzle when it belongs there, but not so much for ‘cue sauces. It was the only woah-there-turn-down-the-heat sauce of the 16 brands. Hot with an ashy, acidic flavor. “Dirty tasting,” said one taster.

A couple of our taste testers are from Texas and have feelings about BBQ sauce. This Kansas City style bottle did not disappoint! In fact, one of them said it tasted just like home. It had a solid deep, smoky flavor and a touch of sweetness. Other notable comments? I want to eat this one with a spoon, and This tastes like a trip to the ball park.

The Bay Tree Smokey Chipotle Bbq Sauce

Another British offering, The Bay Trees sauce had the lowest number of ingredients out of the top five, which reinforced its homemade, small-batch credentials. The smoky flavour comes naturally from the chipotle chilli pepper, but what really sets it apart from the others is the addition of soy sauce, balsamic vinegar and ginger, which gives it an Asian twist reminiscent of Chinese barbecue. It would make a fantastic marinade for pork, and is possibly better suited to cooking with than straight-up dipping, but the sauce itself is delicious and full of big, bold flavours.

Stone House Seasoning Ingredients

The 9 Best BBQ Sauces for Ribs
  • Kosher Salt Kosher salt is the preferred salt in this recipe. When testing, I tested using regular table salt as well as sea salt, but found that I greatly preferred the kosher salt in this recipe. If you substitute with another salt, please be sure to consult salt conversions and realize that it is not a 1 to 1 ratio with kosher salt.
  • Freshly Ground Black Pepper I prefer to use my own freshly ground black pepper in my seasoning blend, but you can of course use store-bought ground black pepper for this recipe as well.
  • Granulated Garlic while I prefer to use granulated garlic in this recipe, if you are in a pinch and only have garlic powder, you can use it as well. The flavor will change slightly, but it will still work. I provide the amount in the recipe below.

It only takes a few moments to blend together the salt, pepper, and garlic but saves so much time in the long run!

Just add all of the ingredients to a small bowl and stir until well combined. Then, transfer to an airtight spice jar or divide into multiple spice jars if youd like to share with friends and family!

Best BBQ SAUCES – Do it YourSelf Blues Hog – Rib Candy Clone SUB. ITA

Before cooking, I recommend removing the membrane from the back of the ribs. Its not essential to do this, but I find the sauce is better absorbed into the meat when removed.

At one end of the rack, slide a fork or a blunt knife under the membrane and over a bone. Lift the membrane away off of the bone until it begins to tear Use a paper towel to grab hold of the edge of the membrane and pull it off. It may come off in one piece or it may tear into smaller pieces.

Warning / disclaimer. These down here were left cooking for 9 hours on low. See how the meat is melting off the bone?

    Open Pit Barbecue Sauce

If you need a simple, inexpensive option to keep in the pantry for the BBQ season, then try Open Pits Original Barbecue Sauce.

We would definitely recommend it for those who prefer more of a tang to their sauce as it is a vinegar-based recipe with a strong taste. It is also slightly spicy, but they do offer it in six flavors. We liked the Original and the Honey recipe the best, but you can also try the Sweet, Hickory, Onion, and Char-Grill recipes.

We like it for average use, but it certainly isnt comparable to the Blues Hog sauce at the top of our list. The ingredients arent very natural, and while it does taste good, we recommend more natural sauces if youre serious about your BBQ experience.

    What Is Stone House Seasoning

Made of three simple ingredients, it really is one of those seasoning blends that combines the flavors that perk up so many dishes from meats to vegetables with such ease!

Most likely, you already have these three ingredients on hand in your pantry, but by combining them in these specific ratios, you can quickly add a pinch, teaspoon, or more to dishes to add so much flavor in a flash!

    Heinz Sticky Barbecue Sauce

It was a bit of a surprise when this bottle placed third in our taste test we had so many bottles made by ‘artisanal’ producers we assumed something like Heinz would be relegated to the back of the list. However, it just goes to show that theres a reason the company has been in business for 150 years they know how to tickle our taste buds. Everyone on the panel agreed it was the best all-rounder, and would please everyone at a party thanks to its balanced flavour. It wasnt too smoky, too hot, too spiced or too sweet and had a nice authentically woody taste from the smoke.
