The Future Looks Hot & Spicy
Jake started a business during a pandemic. For small business owners just starting out, this is an angle he understands. I dont know anything other than running a business during a pandemic. I have no other experiences to base my business on I dont know if it is slower, better, the same. Newks is operating in a different zone.
But he does have advice for those on the verge of starting their own business.
On Shopify:Im pretty happy with Shopify. There are a lot of things you can do with it and Im still learning, but there are a few limitations Ive run into as a hot sauce maker. I have a three-bottle bundle, you save money if you buy three, but theres no way to have a drop-down menu to select which three. Squarespace has that feature, but I didnt find the software options as beefy. Shopify makes it easy to add apps, and I just started sending out regular emails through a Shopify app.
On Kickstarter: I absolutely recommend Kickstarter for businesses just starting out. It takes a little bit of vulnerability to put yourself out there because I didnt want to ask for money outright. The only trick I would suggest is to make sure the amount you are seeking is achievable. If you dont reach your goal, you dont get anything.
Heat is subjective and hard to figure out. You cant satisfy everyone. Thats a big thing I had to learn.

This is seriously The Best Avocado Toast on the planet. Trust me, its extra, its flavorful, its divine. Its an absolute necessity for you to have this for breakfast.
I have a love and hate relationship with avocado toast, because a few months ago I decided to have some for breakfast with nutritional yeast since thats the hype.
It was a mistake.
I dont know if its my overly sensitive taste buds or what but my body did NOT like nutritional yeast, I felt sick and the flavor lingered in my mouth for days. Needless to say, I stick to regular cheese. Or in this case, feta cheese crumbles. Im okay with it, it tastes 110% better.
Sourdough is definitely one of the best breads out there, we get ours at the farmers market and its absolutely delicious when fresh, and even better when toasted.
Whats so great about this avo toast compared to the rest?
Everything. The flavor, the freshness, the kalamata olives, cilantro, all of it! I also have a secret ingredient that is the icing on the cake.
Pomegranate balsamic vinegar. Im sure regular would work fine too, but this one is just so yummy. I bought mine at World Market. Its a nice touch. Call it the Gucci to your Prada.

His banana and habanero became an instant hit with friends, family, and co-workers. He gave them away as gifts, and jokingly called it Kinda Mild, but didnt think there was a way he could sell them. Jake learned that in Oregon, a residential kitchen can be licensed for commercial use if the home is free of kids and pets. He bought some bottles. Made a label. It was mostly for fun.
There was a definite lure in the idea of making a go at working for himself and seeing what this could be.
I wouldnt call myself a workaholic, but Im from Maine, and there, you are born with a hammer in your hand. The work ethic is really strong. So, when I came out west, I was working my ass off and people would say I was the best AV person ever, but they were unwilling to give me a raise. And I knew that this isnt doable. And its exciting to think about the potential earnings and owning your own company. I did go back and forth about what was right for me, but eventually, I knew I wanted to give a shot, Jake says.
