How to Make Tartar Sauce – Homemade Tartar Sauce From Scratch You’ll Use Forever

Around here, fillers and extras are a no-no. All the menus promise no filler crab cakes. In all honestly, you do need a little bit of filler so they stay together. We go for the absolute minimum, which is a glue made from crushed saltine crackers, mayonnaise and one egg. It works beautifully.

We start by tossing the lump crab meat with the crushed crackers. The crackers absorb extra moisture from the crab.

Then, we make a mixture of mayonnaise , egg, mustard, and some Worcestershire sauce and add it to the crab and cracker mixture.

After a few stirs, the mixture is pretty loose. Thats why you see us sliding it into the refrigerator. We keep it in there for an hour or so. The crackers continue to absorb the liquid and that glue I was talking about earlier forms.

After some time in the refrigerator, you can easily form the cakes. We like using a 1/2-cup measure to make 6 generous cakes, but you can make them slightly smaller and make 8 or make them donut-hole size for mini crab balls.

How To Make The Best Fish Sticks

Homemade Tartar Sauce

These better than the box fish sticks are prepared from scratch. The ingredient list is simple and you probably have most of what you need already in your kitchen!

To make fish sticks, you will need the following ingredients :

  • Firm mild white fish like cod, halibut, or catfish.
  • Flour for breading. This can be all-purpose flour or if you are gluten-free, try gluten-free flour or certified GF almond flour.
  • Eggs for breading. If you do not eat eggs, Cooks Illustrated suggests substituting heavy cream for the eggs. You might also get away with olive oil.
  • Breadcrumbs, crushed cereal , or crushed potato chips. We used panko breadcrumbs in the photos, but recently shared homemade chicken nuggets that use potato chips as the breading and they were incredible! For our gluten-free readers, make sure you choose certified GF cereal or chips.
  • Spices including onion powder, garlic powder, dried or fresh dill, salt, and fresh ground black pepper. For different variations, use your favorite spice blends like lemon pepper or Creole seasoning.

To bread the fish, we use a traditional three-part breading process. This is the best way to make sure the breading stays on the fish and becomes crisp.

Its a simple process. Add flour and spices to one dish, beat eggs in a second dish, and then mix breadcrumbs and a few more seasonings in a third dish.

After cutting the fish into thin strips, roll them into the flour, dip into the egg, and then coat in the breadcrumbs.

You can make your tartar sauce extra fancy by adding a slice of lemon to the side of the bowl. That adds a simple touch of elegance to the meal like you would get at your favorite seafood restaurant.

Can You Make A Homemade Tartar Sauce With Greek Yogurt

Absolutely! I always make it this way. I think its just as tasty as using mayonnaise.

If you prefer to use mayonnaise, I suggest you use avocado oil mayo. My favorite brand is Sir Kensington’s. However, any brand you like will work in this recipe, as long as it’s full-fat.

Another tasty option is to use sour cream. I haven’t tried that, but if Greek yogurt works, then sour cream would work too, and would likely be even tastier.

Here Is What You Need To Make This Recipe:

  • Mayonnaise Use good mayo, a brand you trust. You can use light or fat free.
  • Sweet Pickle Relish Bicks is our go-to brand, but any sweet pickle relish will do. You can finely chop sweet pickles too.
  • Vinegar Regular white vinegar is too strong. Use red wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar.
  • Old Bay Seasoning This is the star of this recipe and is the flavour you want when all is said and done.
  • Black Pepper I like the extra warmth from the black pepper. You can skip it.
  • Sugar Weird, yes, but the sweetness offsets the acidity.
  • Lemon Juice Please, I beg you, use freshly squeezed lemon juice!
  • Onion Powder This completely optional! You can also use real onion. Some say that tartar sauce without finely diced onion is not tartar sauce. I dont care for raw onion, so I never use it.

Homemade Tartar Sauce

This Classic Tartar Sauce was a version of all three of them that I sort of randomly came up with and it makes for the PERFECT tartar sauce replacement. I havent bought another jar of tartar sauce since.

The recipe, if you can even call it one, is so simple that the only thing I want to warn you about is that you really want to give it a bit of time to rest so the flavors can really come together. If you dont you basically just have pickle mayo, which is fine, but it wont taste like tartar sauce.

Ive seen a few other variations of Classic Tartar Sauce on the web which you can totally incorporate into your recipe:

  • Instead of dill pickles you can chop up bread and butter pickles.
  • Instead of pickles, you can use sweet relish.
  • Instead of pickle juice you can use ½ the amount of lemon juice.
  • Instead of minced onion, use ½ teaspoon of onion powder.
  • If you really still dont want to make your own, this is the prepared one I loved.

Were going to serve this tartar sauce on all the delicious seafood we can eat this summer including Coconut Shrimp and more.

Homemade Tartar Sauce Ingredients

As I already mentioned, you dont need many ingredients, and this is a really easy tartar sauce recipe. In fact, you can get by with only three or four simple ingredients that you probably have in your fridge.

But in addition to the basic ingredients, I like to add a little bit more for extra flavor. I use mayonnaise, mustard, sweet pickle relish, and lemon or lime juice.

You can also add cayenne, Old Bay seasoning, dill, Italian seasoning blend, or any other seasonings you enjoy.

Also, if you prefer dill pickles or dill relish over sweet, swap them out. Or you might want to mix a little of both to add even more depth of flavor. You can even add pickle juice if you want.

However, if you want to go the other way and make it sweeter, add a little sugar or honey. For tartness, use either bottled lemon juice or fresh lemon juice. It really doesnt matter.

Ive also used dijon mustard instead of the more traditional yellow mustard. It adds an extra little kick to the flavor.

My motto in the kitchen is to take a basic recipe and make it your own. If your family likes your adjustments, make sure you jot down the recipe so you always have it.

Im all about experimenting in the kitchen. In fact, thats how new recipes get their start. Regardless of how you make it, the homemade version is almost always better than the jarred stuff.

If you have kids or grandkids, theyll cherish your recipes. In fact, some of the foods my grandmothers cooked are still among my favorites.

Expert Tips And Tricks

  • Use the real stuff. Both fresh lemon juice and dill taste the best in this recipe.
  • Go small. Chop the pickles finely so you get little bits in every bite.
  • Mix it good. Use a whisk to make sure all of the ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  • Let it rest. Let the mixed sauce sit in the fridge for at least 1 hour for the flavors to meld.

You Must Use Fresh Lemon

Without sounding like a snob, there are a few ingredients in this Old Bay Tartar Sauce that should be brand name. The main ingredient is mayonnaise. Buy a good brand! I wouldnt consider anything but Hellmans. Some other good brands are Dukes and Heinz. Never, under any circumstance, think that Miracle Whip is mayonnaise. It is not!

Unlike my classic tartar sauce, this version is sweeter. I dont use dill or dill pickles in this one, but I do use a little bit of sugar and sweet pickle relish. Dont worry, the sauce will not be too sweet. The lemon juice and Old Bay Seasoning make sure of that!

You may be tempted to use that store-bought lemon juice that everyone seems to have in their fridge. But, dont do it! Buy just one fresh lemon thats all you need! It will make a world of difference in this sauce. Mayonnaise is heavy. You need the fresh lemon juice to add zing and freshness. Otherwise, the sauce tastes like what you can buy in a bottle at the store.

How To Use This Sauce

This flavorful sauce is wonderful with any seafood dish. I usually serve it with crab cakes, tuna cakes, and salmon patties.

It also pairs beautifully with simply boiled shrimp, in lieu of cocktail sauce. And it goes really well with keto fried fish. So as you can see, you have quite a few options for using this homemade tartar sauce! It never lasts long in our house.

How Long Will Homemade Ranch Dressing Last

This easy homemade dressing lasts for 3 to 4 days when stored in the fridge. I wish it lasted longer, but all those fresh herbs start to lose something the longer the dressing sits. I keep mine stored in a mason jar.

In fact, theres a jar of it in our fridge now ready to be used in our favorite dishes. Here are a few suggestions for how to use this easy ranch dressing:

  • Skip store-bought salad dressing and use it on your favorite homemade salads. Its especially delicious with cucumbers, carrots, baby greens, kale, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, sweet bell peppers, cauliflower, and broccoli.
  • Make a big green salad, add a few slices of this juicy grilled chicken, some sliced avocado, and then drizzle over some ranch.
  • Add to a small bowl and use as a dipping sauce for fresh vegetables, roasted veggies , or anything buffalo flavored. We especially love these chicken wings and these baked buffalo cauliflower wings.
