Hearty Cheesy Lasagna With Meat Sauce

Lasagna with Meat Sauce is a hearty homemade dinner that is the perfect comfort food, easy to make and it freezes beautifully too. Trifecta!

Ooey gooey and cheesy this hearty homemade lasagna is a perfect comfort food dinner that is easy to make and it freezes beautifully too. It takes a little bit longer than your average dinner, but its totally worth it especially on these cold winter nights.

I have to admit that Ive never understood people who say that making lasagna is an all day long torturous affair. Maybe theyre making their own pasta? Maybe theyre slaughtering their own hog to make sausage?

The only thing I can guess is that they must be making a sauce that needs to simmer all day. Well I have a secret to share with you. Come closer. Lean in. Its a dirty, dirty secret.

I dont make my own sauce.

*GASP* HERETIC! HERESY! Oh wait, thats redundant.

When we met, Terry was very attached to one kind of premade marinara and so since then Ive never bothered to get too crazy with it when Im cooking for us. Clients are another deal, they get whatever they want, of course. When it comes to the fam though, its one shortcut I happily make.

Recommended sides: garlic bread, green salad, sautéed zucchini or other green veg

Wine: red, something big to stand up to the deep flavors of the lasagna. Cab, Zin, Merlot are all good choices.

How To Reheat Lasagna

To reheat a pan of refrigerated lasagna in the oven, simply cover it with foil and bake it at 350 degrees F. The lasagna will take around 30 40 minutes to reheat. You can reheat a single slice of refrigerated lasagna in the microwave by cooking it on high for 2 minutes. If the lasagna is not heated all the way through after two minutes, rotate it and microwave in 20 second increments until its hot.

Jeff,As Im sure you know, Raos is one of the most famous italian restaurants in America. Located in Harlem, it is literally impossible to get a reservation to eat there.

In addition to the restaurant the company has a full line of sauces etc for sale online as well as in retail store outlets.

Ive eaten in the physical store twice and the food is just average at best. I really cant explain its allure but what is, is.

Ive tried a handful of its frozen dishes including the lasagna you had and they werent very good.

Why I Dont Call For No

While classic dry lasagna noodles are typically boiled before theyre layered, theres no real reason why you have to cook them ahead of time they can actually be layered in with the sauce and cheese as is. And yes, this is just regular lasagna noodles! No-boil lasagna noodles are a modern convenience, but honestly Im not a huge fan of them I find they almost always get overcooked in the casserole. Regular sturdy lasagna noodles take longer to cook than no-boil noodles, but as long as theyre completely covered in sauce and the lasagna is tightly covered with aluminum foil, they cook perfectly right in the oven and never get overcooked.

Eating Healthy Should Still Be Delicious

Rao’s is described as “premium” pasta sauce, and for good reason: it costs about twice as much, maybe even more, than many mass-market marinaras at the supermarket. But it’s worth every penny. Let me try to explain the difference in concrete terms, which is kind of hard, like describing exactly what makes a rainbow cause you to feel whatever it is you feel when you glimpse one.

To begin, the taste. Rao’s is exquisitely balanced. Just enough tart acidity, just enough natural sweetness, just enough tomato umami, just enough savory saltiness. Balance is such a critical factor that’s too often overlooked in food, a fact well articulated by Malcolm Gladwell in his 2004 New Yorker piece on the dominance of Heinz ketchup, which, as he notes in detail, has perfect balance. Consider your current favorite jarred pasta sauce. Chances are, if you give it a taste test , you’ll notice it’s probably a little too sweet. Maybe a little too salty, but probably oversweet, since the American palate skew a little to the sugary side of things.

Used for its intended purpose, heated to coat pasta, it works wonders. I’m sure many of you make world-class homemade pasta sauces, but Rao’s can pass as homemade 99 out of 100 times. Beyond saucing pasta, I use it to make vegetarian chicken parm with Boca patties and fresh mozzarella melted on top until it’s lightly blistered. Heaven.

Jarred Pasta Sauce That Tastes Better Than Homemade

I’m about to make a ringing endorsement for Rao’s pasta sauce with such passion and conviction that I wouldn’t blame you one bit if you thought I was a paid shill for the company. Let me get this out of the way right at the start: I am in no way affiliated with Rao’s. They don’t pay me, they’ve never sent me anything free to sample. Their magical sauce originates from their legendary restaurant in East Harlem, where I cannot even get a reservation. And yet, I’m here to tell you that there is no better jarred pasta sauce on the planet, and using it in your pasta dishes will make you a better cook, your family will love you more, and it’s quite likely you’ll become a better person in general.

    Tips For Spinach Lasagna

    • I recommend using whole milk ricotta and mozzarella cheese for the best flavor. That being said, if youre looking to save a few calories, you can substitute in the part skim versions.
    • Use freshly shredded cheese, not a bag of pre-shredded cheese. The bagged shredded cheese from the grocery store often contains anti caking agents and does not melt smoothly.
    • Use your favorite brand of marinara sauce. I typically use Newmans Own or Classico brand.
    • This dish can be assembled up to 6 hours before you plan to bake it. Store it covered in the fridge until youre ready to eat.
    • You can store any leftover lasagna in the fridge for up to 3 days.
    • Make sure to squeeze all the excess water out of the cooked spinach. This will prevent your lasagna from getting watery as it bakes.
    • You can use 2 boxes of frozen spinach instead of fresh spinach. If you use frozen spinach, make sure to squeeze the water out of the spinach after you thaw it.

    How To Freeze Lasagna

Before Baking: Lasagna is one of those meals that always freezes so well. Make this easy lasagna recipe in advance by preparing it according to the instructions in the recipe card. However, instead of baking it, cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap and make sure that it sticks to the cheese on the top layer. Then add a layer of aluminum foil over the plastic wrap, and freeze for up to 3 months. When youre ready to enjoy, let the lasagna thaw in the refrigerator for 24 hours. Be sure to take the plastic wrap off and bake according to the instructions in the recipe card. You may need to add an extra 10-15 minutes to the covered cook time, if needed, for the lasagna to completely cook through.

After Baking: Sometimes when Im making lasagna, I actually make two pans, and save one for another day. After the baked lasagna has cooled completely to room temperature, either divide it into several portions and pack it in freezer safe containers, or freeze the whole pan. If youre freezing the whole pan, cover with the plastic wrap and then the foil, as instructed above. Lasagna will keep well in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator for 24 hours. Take the plastic wrap off and bake, covered with foil only, for about 30 minutes. You can also heat leftovers in the microwave.

Ingredients For My Easy Meat Lasagna

    Rao

Now, let’s get down to business and talk about this super easy lasagna recipe! Here’s a glance at the ingredients:

This homemade lasagna with meat sauce requires simple, easy to find ingredients that you should be able to purchase at any grocery store.

First up, let’s talk meat. I am completely omnivorous, so I use a mix of ground beef and sweet Italian sausage.

For the ground beef, I prefer a leaner mix of 90/10, but 85/15 or 80/20 will also work. You may need to skim off a bit of excess fat if you choose to use a higher fat mix.

For the Italian sausage, you can either purchase it as a ground meat mix, or purchase links that you remove the casings from.

Reasons This Is The Best Easiest Lasagna Ever

This lasagna isnt complicated. There are three things about it that really make it the best . These are also tips that will ensure cozy casserole success.

  • This recipe uses store-bought sauce . There are just three components that make a lasagna great: the pasta, the cheese, and the sauce. Since this recipe starts with a jar of marinara for ease, make sure its one that tastes great. My favorite brand is Raos, but choose your personal favorite.
  • The lasagna noodles cook right in the sauce. Since the noodles arent pre-boiled, theyll cook from the heat and steam in the oven. Its important that theyre completely covered in the sauce so they cook evenly. A dry corner will result in a crunchy, un-cooked corner.
  • The lasagna can rest before eating. Like all lasagnas, this one is great made ahead, and actually will be better made a little ahead of eating. Yes its tempting to cut into the lasagna right when you pull it from the oven, but let it rest on a cooling rack for at least 15 minutes. This will help firm up all the layers and make it much easier to slice a square. And of course you can make it a day ahead or in the morning then reheat.

How To Store & Freeze Lasagna

I love that you can make this lasagna in advance, freeze it for later, or enjoy leftovers. Honestly, I think it tastes better on day two, after all of the flavors have had time to hang out together.

You can double the recipe and make two, one to eat now and one to eat later. Or you can keep one lasagna and take one to a friend. Lasagna is the perfect meal for sharing with others.

Refrigerate and Serve Later: Tightly wrap the assembled and unbaked lasagna in foil and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before baking. Follow the directions above, adding an extra 10 minutes to the initial bake time to account for it being cold from the refrigerator.

Freeze and Serve Later: Bake the lasagna as directed and let cool completely. Tightly wrap with foil or cut into portions and transfer to separate airtight containers and freeze for up to 3 months. To reheat, transfer to the refrigerator for at least 24 to 48 hours to completely thaw, then reheat in a 375-degree F oven until heated through, about 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes.

Leftover Lasagna: Store the cooked lasagna in the fridge for up to 4 days. Reheat pieces in the microwave or you can reheat the entire lasagna in the oven.
