More Tips From Kara Swanson
Now that you’ve gotten the basic information about how to choose a barbeque sauce down, expert Kara Swanson has a few more tips to add into the mix about sauce formulas and making healthy swaps.
Chemicals seem to be added into everything these days but don’t be fooled – they do nothing good for our health. When you start choosing foods without chemicals – as they should be, they will naturally have a shorter shelf life. Just make sure you read the expiration date and plan meals accordingly so you can use up all of the BBQ sauce to avoid waste.
Also be aware that healthier BBQ sauces might taste a little bit different without all the added sugars, sodium, and chemicals. Be patient though, because your taste buds will adapt and change as you continue making healthier swaps. It takes some time for our bodies and taste buds to get used to less sugar and sodium, but the healthier swap is worth it for your health.

How To Cook Ribs In The Oven
Remove silver skin as shown above, rinse and then pat ribs dry with a paper towel.Pat on my low sodium dry rub mixture on both sides .
Wrap ribs in foil with a tablespoon of water and a dash or two of liquid smoke. Place foil wrapped ribs on a baking tray. Wrap each rib rack individually if more than one.Bake at 350°F for 2 1/2 hours.
Then for the last half hour of cooking, slather with my BBQ sauce recipe. Use a brush or spoon to spread it evenly over the tops, leaving foil open and place back in oven for remaining time. I usually do this once more about 15 minutes later.
Broil for an additional 2-5 minutes if you want to get a crispier top and a little charring on the edges. If you can, let the ribs rest for 5-10 minutes

Cooking And Serving Tips
Here are a few other things to know about making your own BBQ sauce like a pro:
- Make sure to stir frequently, about once every 10 to 15 minutes, while the BBQ sauce is cooking. This will help better incorporate the flavors and ensure that the sauce is evenly cooked throughout.
- Let the sauce cool before transferring to a storage container. A mason jar is a good option. Whatever you use, make sure it’s airtight. You can store your sauce in the refrigerator for up to a week.

How Much Sodium In Pork Ribs
|Typical sodium amount most recipes||1700+ mg|
|Sodium per serving for this recipe||280 mg|
The sodium in the actual ribs themselves is on the lower side as they only contain 70 milligrams in a 4 ounce serving. It is typically the rib dry rub and BBQ sauce that is slathered on the meat that makes the sodium content soar.
Finding the total sodium content for this rib recipe was a little difficult as the nutrition calculator was coming up with over 1000 mg sodium per serving. That was obviously way off for calculating just the meat.
So doing it by hand using the meat nutrition label, the weight of the meat and adding in the rub and Low Sodium BBQ Sauce I came up with roughly 280 mg of sodium for your meal Serving size = 1 lb. or approximately 1/3 rack of ribs. But only when you use my rib dry rub and sauce any additional sodium will be extremely minimal.
Check out most typical recipes online and you will see sodium bombs at over 1700 mg per serving! Pre-packaged samples from the store are close to 500+ mg and who knows how much youre getting at your local BBQ joint.
Yet with this recipe youre still getting all the goodness and incredible fall off the bone taste. With my spice dry rub and if you choose to add my Low Sodium Barbecue Sauce, you will be wolfing these down without having to worry about sodium.

I so love to have homemade, healthy mixes and condiments in my kitchen.
Low Carb No Sugar Homemade BBQ Sauce is easy and guess what! It tastes just like BBQ sauce!
I have tried quite a few BBQ sauce recipes and have often been disappointed. That is, until I tried this one.
I was encouraged when it smelled so much like the real thing as it cooked but I didnt want to be too hopeful. It turns out that the hope was well founded.
THIS is the recipe I have been looking for!
I found it here and made a few changes.
Instead of using whole garlic and onion, I use powder. It is lower carb and easier, not to mention we wouldnt want the chunks in our sauce.
So many recipes say No Sugar but what they really mean is no white sugar and they add honey, maple syrup, or artificial sugar.
Even the healthy versions have sugar of some kind added and that is not low carb.
This recipe REALLY has NO SUGAR . You wont get away from that in a bbq sauce made with tomatoes, unfortunately.
The tomatoes will add about 1 gram of sugars to each Tablespoon of bbq sauce.
Dont ask me how, but the added sugar is not needed in this recipe. You can thank me lateror now, that is fine.
And the best part about that is that it is still wonderful BBQ sauce!

VARIATIONS ON HEALTHY BBQ SAUCE
- Maple Syrup BBQ Sauce: One of many popular ways to prepare BBQ Sauce is with maple syrup as one of the sweeteners. Instead of using the brown sugar in this recipe you can use 2 tablespoons maple syrup and 2 tablespoons molasses to give a rich and sweet flavor.
- Sugar Free/ Keto BBQ Sauce: While this BBQ sauce already has low-sugar, you can make a completely sugar free BBQ sauce recipe thats Keto-friendly. Remove the brown sugar from the recipe. You can use a variety of sugar substitutes like Splenda, Lakanto or Sucralose, but Sukrin All-Natural Brown Sugar Alternative is probably the closest youll get in taste. Its made primarily of erythritol and has a similar deep taste to the regular sugar, so you can get an authentic taste for your sugar-free BBQ sauce. To be completely Keto, youll also need to remove the Worcestershire sauce because it has 1.7 g sugar per tablespoon making it non-keto. Finally, youll need to replace the balsamic vinegar for a sugar-free vinegar.

Cant I Just Buy Low Sodium Bbq Sauce
It certainly makes sense to try to find low sodium BBQ sauce at the grocery store. Store bought options save time!
Whereas low sugar BBQ sauces are common, it is surprisingly hard to find a BBQ sauce that is low sodium. The definition of a low sodium food is less than 140mg of sodium per serving.
The only two BBQ sauces I found with less than 140mg of sodium per 2 tablespoon serving are:

Choose The Right Meat
No matter how low sodium your recipe is, getting the wrong meat can throw it all down the drain. Sodium is often used as a preservative in meat. This means that you are starting with some sodium content in your food even before you add anything.
If you are purchasing from a grocery, or within the frozen meat aisle, it is important to read the packaging. You are looking for salt content or the mention of sodium. The ideal state is where there isnt any added.
Benefits Of A Low Sodium Diet
Why should you use low sodium BBQ sauce anyway? The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that everyone limit how much salt they eat to 2,300mg per day. Most of us are eating closer to 3,200mg of sodium per day!
A low sodium diet can help prevent heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke and even some cancers.
It is especially important for some people to follow a low sodium diet. A sodium diet restriction is often recommended to people with these health conditions:
- Kidney Disease

Hi John,These are the ingredients in this recipe that I am aware of that contain sodium: tomato paste , Worcestershire sauce , chili powder and of course the salt itself.I believe if you omit the salt and buy the reduced or no sodium tomato paste and Worcestershire sauce, you will reduce the sodium content in the recipe greatly. Please know though, that I am not a medical doctor, certified dietitian or nutritionist so it would be irresponsible of me to give any medical advice. While I have not tested this recipe with the salt omitted I think it should be okay. If you try it out be sure to come back and leave a comment and let me know how it turned out for you.I hope this is helpful to you and you are able to find a bbq sauce that you enjoy!~Joy
