Pesto, also known as Pesto alla Genovese or Pesto to refer to the original recipe, is a sauce that has its roots in Genoa, the regional capital of Liguria, Italy.

Crushed garlic, European pine nuts, coarse salt, basil leaves, and hard cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano or Pecorino Sardo , all combined with olive oil, are the typical ingredients.

Basil oil

Making a simple herb oil by finely cutting a handful of basil leaves and blending in just enough extra virgin olive oil to create a chunky paste is the quickest and simplest alternative to pesto.

Other Herb Oils

If its not summer or you dont have any basil, you can prepare a herb oil using other herbs in a similar way. The oil that most closely resembles pesto or basil is parsley oil.

However, mint, oregano, and coriander can also be used to make herb oils . OR a mix of any of the aforementioned. These all differ from basil or pesto in flavor profile and can be a welcome difference.

Other Sauces

Use of a different sauce is the other substitute for pesto. This will entirely change the course of your dish, but it might not be a bad thing.

For instance, you may substitute a tomato-based pasta sauce for pesto. Alternatively, a dab of garlicky mayonnaise will provide the same level of richness and flavor to a soup.

What Grocery Store Aisle Is Pesto In

Pesto can usually be found in the spaghetti aisle, near other Italian foods.

Like spaghetti, pesto basil has Italian origins, and the two are typically stocked right next to each other.

Pesto can usually be recognized by the small glass jars or plastic trays that it comes in. Its often stored on the upper shelves of the Italian food aisle, so you should begin your search there.

Note that at least one variety of pesto basil is sold in most grocery stores. So, if you are having trouble finding it, a store clerk or associate should be able to help you.

Barilla Rustic Basil Pesto

The other Barilla option is the Rustic Basil Pesto, which has a flavor that is more in line with the usual jarred offerings. It is devoid of creaminess but instead, features a classic combination of basil, nuts, oil, and cheese. Interestingly, this pesto also contains spinach in its ingredients, contributing to the extra green flavor and high nutrient content. Since we cannot taste the spinach, we will gladly accept the added nutrition.

The Walmart reviews show that this pesto is well-loved although the comments are somewhat mixed. Some people indicate that the pesto is a bit too sweet, whereas others think it is too salty. In fact, we find that this brand actually has the best balance of sweet and salty that we’ve found. People note that the flavor is very basil-forward, with not too much garlic to overpower the taste. If you are looking for a classic basil pesto to take home, this one will do just the trick.

Where Is Pesto In Walmart

Walmart offers a wide variety of basil pesto, and typically carries several varieties within their stores.

That being said, the exact aisle number you can find pesto in varies from store to store. Thankfully, Walmart has developed a solution to this problem, and all it requires is for you to download their mobile app!

In the picture above, you can see a page I pulled up for Classico Traditional Basil Pesto using the Walmart app. Below the Pickup Today text, you can see a small label that says Aisle A9.

This means that at my specific Walmart store in Omak Washington, this specific pesto item can be found in aisle 9.

When you first download and run the app, it will ask you to put in your zip code to find your local Walmart location. Then, the app will update to show you which aisle each pesto is in at your specific location.

Note that not all pestos listed on Walmart.com are sold at each store. Usually, you can find out which ones are stocked locally by looking at those that are available for pickup.

Is Pesto Healthy To Eat

Barilla® Rustic Basil Pesto Sauce and Spread 6 oz

Pesto is a sauce that is traditionally made with basil, olive oil, garlic, parmesan cheese, and pine nuts. It is often used as a topping for pasta or pizza, along with other Italian dishes.

Some people believe that pesto is healthy to eat because it contains ingredients that are known to be good for you, such as olive oil and basil. However, others believe that pesto is not as healthy as it could be because of the high fat content, so you should pay attention to how much of it youre consuming.

There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to whether or not pesto is healthy to eat. It really depends on your own personal opinion and what you are looking for in a sauce. Like all tasty things, moderation is key.

Most supermarkets offer refrigerated tubs of pesto, but theyve got a short shelf life especially once theyre opened. Shelf-stable jars, however, are usually a lot cheaper, plus you can keep them on hand in the pantry for when the craving strikes. The trouble is, jarred pesto doesnt always look all that appetizing.

Where Can I Find Vegan Pesto

But for some reason, the prices dont add up.

So I typed the same keyword on Amazon and was given more affordable options.

The best-selling vegan pesto on Amazon is the Amore Pesto Paste.

The ingredients used on this vegan pesto are the following: basil, sunflower oil, olive oil, salt, pine nuts, garlic, and citric acid.

This is clearly suitable for vegans unless theyre allergic to nuts.

The only downside is that it comes in a plastic tube and thus is less sustainable. Yet at the same time, the pesto isnt as easily exposed to air , and you can portion out the exact amount needed for a given recipe.

Otherwise, you can also choose the second best-sold option.

Although to be frank, it doesnt look as presentable as the former, even though this one is clearly a more sustainable option.

Plus, the lack of artificial ingredients shortens the pestos lifespan.

Heres the list of ingredients in this pesto: rapeseed oil, ground brazil nuts , basil , white wine vinegar, ground cashew nuts , ground hazelnuts , garlic purée, concentrated apple juice, salt, black pepper, toasted sesame oil, chili powder.

The fact its more natural also makes it more expensive than the former option.

Purchasing pesto sauce is one of the best investments you can make.

Most people think this delicacy is only used to top home-cooked pasta, but thats actually a waste of its potential. Pesto can be used as a dipping sauce, as salad dressing, sandwich spread, and even to fill up burritos.

If we take a trip to Italy, where pesto was created, youll find out that the traditional pesto is made with fresh basil leaves, olive oil, Parmesan cheese, garlic, and pine nuts, therefore, its not vegan.

However, its possible to find pesto recipes that dont use animal products, including store-bought pesto.

What Can I Get Instead Of Pesto

Barilla® Creamy Basil & Arugula Pesto Sauce and Spread 5.6 oz

You can opt for olive tapenade instead of pesto when youre craving a spread. Olive tapenade consists of olives, olive oil, capers, and anchovies. Its a popular condiment in Mediterranean cuisine.

It is often used as a dip or spread for bread, crackers, or vegetables. You can also use tapenades in cooking to add flavor to dishes like pasta or fish.

Looking for another spread alternative for your bread? Try hummus. Hummus is a popular Middle Eastern food.

The name is originally derived from the Arabic word for chickpeas. You can use hummus as a sandwich spread, dip for chips or vegetables, or topping for falafel. Usually, its made with cooked chickpeas blended with tahini sauce, lemon juice, salt, and garlic.

Or if you were craving pesto on your pasta, you can use basil-infused olive oil. This is an amazing way to enjoy the flavor of basil without the pine nuts or cheese in pesto. You infuse your oil with the flavor of fresh basil, which gives it a delicious taste.

Its perfect for adding to salads or used as a dip. If you enjoy cooking, basil oil gives a gourmet touch to your dishes.

The Barilla brand is known for its pasta and pasta sauce products. While the company carries numerous marinara red sauce varieties, it produces two types of pesto: Creamy Genovese and Rustic Basil. The former contains sunflower oil, some olive oil, pine nuts, as well as cashews. The unusual creaminess of this pesto is due to the cheese and whey in the ingredients.

The reviews on Barilla’s website show the immense love that consumers have for this product. Many people note that the smooth consistency is a huge factor contributing to the fandom behind this product, attracting both adults and kids alike. Some reviews even mention that the creaminess balances out the pungent flavor of the herbs. The flavors are bright, savory, fresh, and not too garlic forward. You will likely be able to track down this jarred pesto as it is carried in most grocery stores. When you find it, know that you will be in for a good meal.

The Best Jarred Pesto: Rustichella Dabruzzo Pesto Sauce

The color was darker than most of the others we tried, but this pesto was truly bursting with basil flavor, more so than the rest. It tasted the most like homemade pesto. Its very salty because its a concentrate, so its recommended to dilute the pesto with an equal amount of olive oil. That means, technically, youll get about 8 ounces of pesto out of one jar. Complementing the basil flavor was a good balance of cheese, nuts, acidity, and olive oil. Buy: Rustichella dAbruzzo Pesto Sauce, $10.50 for 4.5 ounces

Note: We realize our winning pick is still a little pricey, so wed like to also suggest a runner up, Barilla Rustic Pesto sauce. This version is available at most mainstream grocery stores and didnt disappoint. This one has a more herby flavor than the other contenders, plus tart, bright notes that balanced the richness of the oil, nuts, and cheese. Buy: Barilla Rustic Pesto Sauce, $2.46 for 6.3 ounces at Walmart

Pasta nights are a weekly occurrence in many households. What’s not to like about a simple, affordable meal that everyone in the family will enjoy? If you are anything like us, you might be torn over whether to include marinara or pesto sauce on your plate on any given night. We love them both, but some evenings just call for a fresh herbal pesto. Pesto gets its name from the Italian verb pestare, meaning to pound, according to Saveur. The sauce is traditionally made using a mortar and pestle, the latter which also owes its name to the Italian language.

Any sauce can be a pesto if it contains nuts, oil, and herbs. When we talk about pesto in the US, we are usually referring to a classic Italian sauce made of basil, pine nuts, olive oil, garlic, and Parmesan cheese. When we aren’t making a homemade pesto for our pasta nights, we look for a jarred pesto that contains classic ingredients, isn’t overly oily, and is fresh with no rancid oil flavor. While we most often serve pesto over pasta, it can be used in so many other ways. We love having it with fish, chicken, hummus, and even on sandwiches.

Feeling a little underwhelmed by the jarred pestos you’ve purchased in the past? Take a look at the list below for our ranking of the various options available. You will finally no longer have to settle for disappointment when you purchase jarred basil pesto.

    Whole Foods Market Basil Pesto

Whole Foods 365 Basil Pesto is made from basil, olive oil, sunflower oil, cashews, Parmesan, Pecorino Romano, potato starch, pine nuts, and garlic. Yet again, we see another jarred pesto that contains potato starch. While these ingredients are odd, they are also all organic if that is of importance to you. Nonetheless, we are shocked at the long list of ingredients in this jarred pesto from Whole Foods, of all places. We had suspected that 365 Organic would have the freshest pesto with the least amount of ingredients.

As far as the taste of this jarred pesto, we were equally disappointed. This pesto is very oily and greasy and it tastes bitter like pureed spinach, although spinach is not one of the many ingredients. We would even go so far as to say this jarred pesto is horrible. We’d recommend seeking out other brands if you are looking for a solution for your pasta night because this one has very few redeeming characteristics.

What Aisle Is Pesto In At The Grocery Store

Pesto will usually be near the pasta sauces in most grocery stores. It may also be found in the condiment aisle for some stores. Fresh pesto may also be found in refrigerated areas, such as near the produce or cheese sections.

If youre looking for vegan pesto, you might need to look near other vegan-specialty items. Always make sure to read labels carefully when shopping if you need to cater to special dietary needs.

If you cannot find the pesto in any of the sections mentioned above, its always a good idea to ask an employee to point you in the right direction. They will usually be happy to help you find what youre looking for.
