Is Carolina Bbq Sauce Sweet

Cattlemen’s Carolina Gold on Smokehouse Carolina BBQ Sauce with Apricot

Although there is a little bit of sugar and honey to cut the acidity of the mustard and vinegar, this is not a super sweet sauce like you might be used to if your usual choice is the thick red stuff from a bottle

I really like to kick it up a little with some spice as well, but the cayenne is totally optional and feel free to leave it out if spice isnt your thing.

One of my favorite things about Carolina Gold Sauce is how it pairs perfectly with pulled pork to cut through the fat and balance it all out.

Bonus: as far as barbecue sauces go, its not completely tragic in terms of nutritional value either. Theres a little bit of sugar and honey, but my mustard barbecue sauce recipe has no added oil or fat, and its low in calories as well.

Carolina Gold can be used on so much more than just plain barbecue as well.

Its delicious as a dip for sweet potato wedges, a fun option for tossing hot wings in, and can even be brushed over baked salmon!

Kc Masterpiece Original Bbq Sauce

Another of the budget options on your grocer’s shelves is KC Masterpiece Original BBQ Sauce. And just like Kraft’s concoction, this stuff is absolutely awful. KC Masterpiece attempts to use hickory smoke flavor to balance its sickly sweetness, and the result is an overpowering taste of mediocrity. If you make the mistake of adding it to meat of any kind, this sauce is all you will taste. However, some people do make cookies with it how’s that for a testament to how sweet it is?

Additionally, KC Masterpiece Original BBQ sauce has a chemical aftertaste, which is definitely not the taste you want in your mouth after an evening spent slaving over a hot grill.

Don’t be fooled by the Hickory Brown Sugar version that KC Masterpiece also markets. It tastes almost exactly the same as their original sauce with just a tiny hint of the existence of brown sugar.

Kraft Original Barbecue Sauce

If you enjoy ingesting a whole lot of sugar, you’ll love Kraft Original Barbecue Sauce. In fact, there’s so much of it in this sauce that it’s the first ingredient listed on the bottle. Yuck! Why would they ruin what used to be a totally acceptable barbecue sauce? Adding a little bit of sweetness to your sauce is one thing, but turning into a bottle of nothing but sugar is just plain gross and not what anyone is looking for in a barbecue sauce.

To make matters even worse, Kraft attempts to cover up the sweetness by adding an obnoxious level of spiciness. Two problems: First, the spiciness isn’t pleasant it tastes like stale black pepper. Secondly, it really doesn’t mix well with all the sugar. This stuff is just a disaster. All that sugar can’t be too great for your health, either. Avoid it, even if it’s the cheapest option on the shelf.

Trader Joe’s Carolina Gold Barbeque Sauce

Give kudos to Trader Joe’s for not being bashful about stepping out of the box to create a one-of-a-kind barbecue sauce. This stuff is really unique and really good. While you can put it on a cheeseburger or a sub sandwich, it really stands out when used with chicken. If you’re searching for a sauce to use for dipping chicken, this is it.

Trader Joe’s Carolina Gold Barbeque Sauce has a strong mustard base but it successfully blends in sweetness from molasses and a subtle hint of smoke. Besides chicken, this is the sauce to use on grilled vegetables. While it’s absolutely fine on pork and beef, you will appreciate what it can do to take your chicken and vegetables to the next level.

Unlike many of the competing barbecue sauces, Trader Joe’s found the optimal balance between being easy enough to pour yet still being thick and creamy enough to use as a dipping sauce.

How To Apply Bbq Sauce

French’s Carolina Tangy Gold Cattleman’s BBQ Sauce

Make sure you keep a very close eye on the meat if you decide to sizzle the sauce. Due to the sugar content, you could very quickly end up with a slab of meat coated in charcoal instead of a sweet, smoky glaze.

A word of warning never reuse the leftover barbecue sauce that you used to coat your meat with. Even if your meat was almost cooked at the time you applied the sauce, there is still a risk that microbes and spores that live in un/undercooked meat could spread.

Use a separate bowl for the sauce you coat your meat with, and discard any sauce you dont use to coat the meat with. Always place fresh, uncontaminated sauce on the table as a condiment.

How Much Sauce Should I Use

You dont need to load up your meat with gallons of sauce to get a great result. Remember, the flavor of the meat and the smoke should really be the stars of the show.

One or two coats of sauce on your meat while it cooks is enough. Meathead Goldwyn of gives a rough guide:

A full slab of spareribs with the tips still on will need at least 3/4 cup of a thick sauce for both sides, a slab of St. Louis cut ribs will need 1/2 cup, and a slab of baby back ribs will need 1/3 cup.

If your guests are big fans of barbecue sauce, you can always put some more sauce out on the table so they can top up if they like.

Heinz Classic Sweet & Thick Bbq Sauce

Heinz has been in business since 1869 and has been making its famous ketchup since 1876. Today’s Heinz ketchup is by far the most popular brand of ketchup in the United States. Recently, Heinz expanded to offering a new line of barbecue sauces and so far the results have been impressive for being the new kid on the block.

Heinz Classic Sweet & Thick BBQ Sauce hit shelves in 2017 and it’s doing a lot right. As the name suggests, this barbecue sauce is sweet and it has a thickness that works especially well when used as a dipping sauce. It’s made with cane sugar and a variety of spices including onion and garlic, plus tamarind concentrate.

Give Heinz a few more years and these ketchup experts will probably be climbing this list. As it stands, this barbecue sauce is slightly heavy on the vinegar taste. Heinz Classic Sweet & Thick BBQ Sauce is good enough to buy, but it’s still a work in progress as they continue to work on balancing all the flavors.

How To Use Barbecue Sauce

Using barbecue sauce may seem like a straightforward process, but here are some tips for newbie grillers:

  • Avoid applying the sauce too early during the grilling process. You dont want the sugars in the BBQ sauce to burn at extremely high temperatures. Apply it later to avoid a burnt flavor and an unpleasant, tough texture
  • The best time to apply the sauce is roughly 10 minutes before the food is done to ensure your meat caramelizes and imparts pleasant flavors
  • Dont apply too much or too little sauce. Use a sauce mop or a brush to spread the sauce evenly on your meat. Apply at least two coats, being careful not to exert excessive pressure on the meat
  • For low-and-slow cooking meats, avoid cooking directly on the flames. Use a covered grill and place your food between the sources of heat. Avoid lifting the lid every so often

Talking about flavor, did you ever wonder why beer and barbecue mix so well?

Cattlemens Kc Classic Bbq Sauce Review

The History of Cattlemen’s BBQ Sauce

It was something I had to do. I review the searches performed on this site and it was easy to see that one of the most popular searches for which I didnt have a solid result is Cattlemens BBQ Sauce. I have already professed my penchant for Bullseye BBQ sauce and I had reviewed several other big brand sauces . I found out while its not revolutionary or remarkable, it is quite tasty and deserves 4 stars.

Nice. Complex. Good dark tomato, garlic, vinegar, and onion. Hint of whiskey? Maybe that was something I drank.

A little bit smoky, a little bit dark KC BBQ sauce, and some spices thrown in to mix it up . No heat, but interesting enough to feel somewhat different compared to the scores of sauces that are very similar.

What Does Carolina Gold Bbq Sauce Taste Like

Carolina Gold is a unique barbecue sauce thats unlike any other. The base of the sauce is yellow mustardyou can imagine the wonderful tang it adds!

The addition of honey and tomato paste balance out the tang with just enough natural sweetness. Plus, a few tablespoons of molasses add depth without making it reminiscent of the all-too-sweet sticky brown sauce over-served here in the midwest.

All that to say, this sauce is tangy, slightly sweet, and mildly spicy.
