Celiac.com 12/05/2020 – We recently fielded a question about whether A-1 stake sauce is gluten-free by pointing out that it was not labeled gluten-free, but likely safe, as it contains no gluten ingredients, and manufacturer Kraft is very good about labeling allergens, including gluten. A product made with no gluten ingredients not having a gluten-free label is not necessarily a big deal, but many people with celiac disease like to play it safe.

It’s also true that there numerous brands of steak sauce are gluten-free. These brands go the extra mile to make sure their steak sauces are labeled “Gluten-Free.” That means that you can breath extra easy about serving them to people with celiac disease.

Why Is Some Barley Malt Vinegar No Longer Gluten Free

Coeliac UK has recently updated its guidelines stating that it will no longer be listing products containing barley malt extract or barley malt vinegar unless they are labelled as gluten free.

This is placing a greater responsibility on the manufacturers to confirm that products contain less than 20ppm of gluten and can be labelled as gluten free.

It means 187 products have been removed from Coeliac UK’s ‘safe’ list – including Branston Pickle, Lea and Perrins and Sarson’s Malt Vinegar.

However, a couple of products which are still listed as safe, and a good gluten free alternative, include:

  • Heinz Rich and Tangy Sandwich Pickle
  • Blenders Malt Vinegar 10ml sachets
  • Heinz Chunky Classic Ploughman’s Pickle

Obviously Coeliac UK is continuing to contact manufacturers and if any of the removed products appear safe again, I will update this guide and let you know!

This is why the Coeliac UK scanner app is so useful – I use it all the time and it’s helped me discover loads of products I didn’t know I could eat.

Question: Is Canned Tomato Sauce Or Paste Gluten Free

Does tomato paste or sauce contain any gluten? I have non-celiac gluten sensitivity, and have found most “sauces”, including salsa, contain some gluten. I can’t find how to ask Hunt’s if there is any in the can of tomato paste I have.

Why aren’t all manufacturers of packaged products indicating whether or not their products contain gluten, considering it is the newly-found cause of allergies, as well as harmful to a person with Celiac disease. Additionally, why don’t manufacturers willingly provide a complete list of ingredients? They don’t have to tell the quantity, for the public, so it should not endanger their recipe secrecy.

Recipe Step By Step Directions:

Is Tomato Sauce Gluten Free?

This homemade marinara sauce recipe is so easy to make. It takes about 15-20 minutes, depending on how long you want to simmer the sauce.

Step 1: Cook your gluten free pasta according to the package directions. Every brand is slightly different so use the recommended cooking time. Make sure to avoid mushy pasta with these gluten free pasta cooking tips.

Step 2: With a large knife, smash two garlic cloves with the flat part of the knife. You can also use a garlic press if you have one.

Step 3: Heat a large frying pan with olive oil over medium heat and saute the garlic until it becomes soft and golden in color, which takes around 3-4 minutes. If you choose to add the optional leeks or onion, add them in now too.

Step 4: Add in the capers, seasonings, and fresh basil. Bring to a gentle boil then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for 10-15 minutes for flavors to blend. Add salt and pepper to taste.

As with any marinara sauce made from scratch, it gets better on the second day as the flavors mesh together overnight.

Sauces Which Are *sometimes* Gluten Free

These sauces are always worth checking – sometimes they will contain gluten but some varieties and brands are gluten free.

I can definitely recommend the Coeliac UK scanner app if you want to check before you buy.

Sauces and condiments which are usually gluten free in the UK are:

  • Tomato Ketchup
  • Some brands of Brown Sauce
  • Some varieties of BBQ sauce
  • Salad dressings
  • Supermarket own brand Yeast Extract – while Marmite is not gluten free, a lot of the own brand ones are. Double check using the scanner app.
  • Relishes and pickles – always double check using the scanner app
  • Tartare sauce – some versions have wheat flour in but some are gluten free

When it comes to tomato ketchup, you’ll be pleased to know Heinz ketchup is gluten free!

In fact, at the time of writing, the Coeliac UK scanner app lists 222 varieties which are gluten free, so that is definitely a bonus for all your ketchup fans!

If you like BBQ sauce, you’ll be pleased to know there are quite a few you can eat.

The HP BBQ sauce is gluten free, and there are quite a few BBQ sauce bottles, marinades and jar sauces which are listed in the Coeliac UK app.

With salad dressings, the majority are gluten free but it’s important to double check the ingredients as there are so many different varieties.

One for the fans out there – the bad news is that Marmite is not gluten free.

However, many of the supermarket own brand Yeast Extracts are gluten free and safe for people with coeliac disease to eat.

Jar Goods is out to disrupt things with a buyer-focused mission that expands sauce uses and leaves out artificial ingredients. Getting started with an old family recipe, they were selected for the Chobani Food Incubator in 2016. The sauce aisle will never be the same.

Is Tomato Paste Safe For Coeliac Disease Sufferers

Red Sauce Gluten Free Pasta | Gluten Free Pasta in Tomato Sauce

Is tomato paste safe for people who suffer from coeliac disorder? People who have an autoimmune disorder such as coeliac disease are asking what type of foods to eat and to avoid and tomato paste is one of the staples that are being looked into.

There are brands of tomato paste and tomato ketchup that contain pure cornstarch as a thickener. The starch derived from corn kernels is considered pure and is gluten-free. People with the coeliac disorder can safely indulge in tomato-based dishes without triggering the autoimmune defences.

What is Coeliac Disorder?

Coeliac disease occurs when ingestion of gluten found in wheat, barley, rye and other grains can trigger our bodys immune system. Our bodys defences attack the finger-like projections called villi in the small intestines wall. These tiny protrusions are responsible for the absorption of nutrients. When the villi are destroyed, the essential vitamins and mineral are not absorbed by the body resulting in nutrient deficiency and weight loss. The disorder may eventually lead to serious medical complications.

Gluten is the assortment of proteins found in wheat, barley, rye, and other related grains. Gluten is a binding component that gives the dough its chewy and elastic characteristic and helps the dough to rise.

Autoimmune disorders are genetic, you can be sure that if any of your parent or both of them suffer from one type of debilitating disease, you are predisposed to suffer the same.

Possible Gluten Ingredients In Ketchup

While gluten grain products are unlikely in ketchup, there are several that may be subject to gluten cross-contamination in processing. In addition, some who eat gluten-free may still experience a reaction to distilled vinegar that’s made from gluten grains, even under 20 ppm.

In the U.S., companies are supposed to disclose vinegar made from wheat on their labels. However, this rule does not always apply to condiments. Therefore, some manufacturers may use vinegar distilled from wheat to make their ketchup without always disclosing it on their labels. But distilled white vinegar derived from wheat should still test below the 20 ppm limit.
