Why Homemade Bbq Sauce Spurs Competition

How to Make Great Barbecue Sauce

Homemade BBQ sauce is extremely popular here in the Deep South. When we folks get together for an outdoor barbecue, it usually involves pork, and several of the guests are bound to bring their own sauce creations. These cooks usually encourage or insist that the party guests try their own special recipe. Of course, each one is totally convinced that his is the best the world has ever known. Yep, I said his because most of these good-natured braggarts are men. A casual cookout can quickly escalate into a serious battle with the guests caught in the middle.

As you can probably tell, homemade sauce is serious business in my neck of the woods, and the most popular type around here is the tomato-based sauces. In the South, barbecue sauce is often a regional thing, and in fact, some states might have several different signature sauces for different areas of the state. Of course, it doesnt matter what everyone else likes. Whats important is what you like. There isnt one best recipe that everyone can agree on. With homemade recipes, however, you can create the best sauce for you by using your favorite ingredients.

How To Make The Best Barbecue Sauce

Not only is making your own barbecue sauce from scratch infinitely more delicious than anything youll find at the store, it is EASY.

While this isnt one of those 3 ingredient BBQ sauce recipes , it is still super simple and its flavor is a dead ringer for the barbecue sauces Ive tried at legit BBQ joints.

Lets break it down, BBQ-style.

Heres How You Make It

How to make the best BBQ sauce for ribs? Ill tell ya:

  • Whisk together all the ingredients listed in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Keep stirring and reduce to a simmer, cooking for an additional 15 minutes.
  • Serve this simple BBQ sauce recipe right away, or, let it sit covered, in the fridge for about an hour to let the flavors really come together.

Finish Your Sauce And Apply To Meat

When you reached the desired flavor, turn down the heat to low and simmer the sauce for 20 minutes, whisking occasionally. This allows the flavors to all meld together and create the final great flavors youre looking for. While this is happening, you should have your meat cooking on the grill.

You want to apply the sauce directly to the cooking meat while both are hot. This will let the sauce seep into the meat better, and wont reduce your cooking times by adding something cold to something hot. You should also add several layers of sauce, every five minutes or so until the meat is done. This produces that thick, stick coating everyone loves.

    What Makes A Good Sauce

    The Best Homemade BBQ Sauce

It depends where you come from, some prefer tang from vinegar and others prefer some heat or more mustard. Then others just like that sweet tasting sugar hit over everything.

So I say why dont we combine the lot?

When I went about creating this BBQ sauce, I wanted something that stood out from the crowd. Yes, I wanted that sweetness I come to expect from most BBQ sauces but I also wanted to have that extra layer of tang in the flavor profile.

Last but not least I wanted a nice little but of heat at the end. Nothing to burn my throat, just enough to make me sit up and pay attention.

So after a few batches were made and tweaked, we now have what all my family and friends refer to as Schueys Sauce. By all means, it can now be yours and you can adjust the flavors quite easily to accommodate your taste.

Always gather the ingredients so you know that you have everything you need. Ive started working on recipes in the past, only to discover that I needed something I didnt have.

Now its time to get started. First, combine all of the ingredients in a medium-size saucepan.

Stir until everything is well mixed.

Secondly, turn the burner on medium-low and heat the mixture for 10 minutes. Stir several times to make sure it doesnt stick to the bottom of the pan.

After the mixture has heated up enough for the flavors to blend, give it a taste. Adjust the ingredients if it isnt the way you want it.

Make sure you only add a tiny amount at a time, or you might wind up overdoing it.

    Classic Bbq Rib Sauce

    The Spruce

A great rib sauce should cook on the ribs, low and slow so that it can sink into the pores of the meat and create a sticky crust on the surface. That’s the case with this sauce, made on a base of ketchup and flavored with sugar, spices and liquid smoke for a true BBQ taste.

Keeps for 1 week in the fridge.

What Are The Four Types Of Barbecue

You may have heard of different types of barbecues: Carolina, Kansas City, Texas, and Memphis. There are others of course, but these are the most popular styles. But what makes them different?

  • Carolina Barbecue is slow roasted pork thats pulled, shredded, or chopped and sometimes rubbed with a spice mixture before being smoked. It is more vinegar-based with the sauces and the taste. Sometimes the same vinegar/sweet/spicy sauce is serving on the side for dipping.
  • Memphis Barbecue relies on both wet and dry rubs/sauces for its meat. But either way, the meat is cooked on low and slowly for a long time. Its often served on sandwiches with a tangy tomato-based sauce.
  • Kansas City Barbecue is also made from a tomato base but is sweetened by molasses. Kansas City also relies on all kinds of meat for its barbecuing purposes, not just pork. The meat is dry rubbed before being smoked and is served with a thick, sweet sauce on the side.
  • Texas Barbecue is cooked low and slow in pits with a dry rub instead of a sauce. This kind of barbecue isnt generally served with much in the way of sauce either.

While a good BBQ spice rub is usually more important to achieving lip-smacking taste, many backyard grilling enthusiasts also love to slather a sauce on their fire-cooked meats. Be it as a marinade or a sandwich topping, the right sauce can really enhance the flavor of just about any of your BBQ favorites.

Pre-bottled sauces are alright, but you can take your summer grilling up a notch by creating your own DIY sauce.

BBQ sauces begin with a tomato base typically tomato paste or very often ketchup it may seem a hair less pure to use a condiment to make another condiment, but its common even amongst expert BBQ-ers, as ketchup already has some spices built in, as well as a high sugar content that helps turn the sauce into a nice sticky glaze. To this tomato base is often added Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, mustard, molasses, salt, pepper, and other spices.

A variety of other things can be added to your sauce to enhance its flavor and make it even more unique: maple syrup, bacon, whiskey, berries of all kinds, pureed peppers for heat, and even stuff you may never have heard of like powdered beer and jalapeno sugar. The options and combinations are nearly limitless.

While store bought barbecue sauces will usually have preservatives in them that allow you to keep them in your fridge for months, homemade sauces dont quite have the same shelf life.

Thanks to the preservative properties in vinegar, salt and sugar you should be fine to store your bbq sauce for several weeks, potentially up to a few months.

    Jack Daniel’s Rib Glaze

Making Homemade BBQ Sauce 4 Ways » Sweet | Vinegar | Mustard | White

Whiskey-based barbecue sauces have a long history in the South. Our sweet tomato-based sauce gets that great whiskey flavor, and the sugar and spices tame that bite. Make the sauce a few days in advance for it to have time for the flavors to blend and for the whiskey to mellow.

The recipe starts with simmering a cup of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey and flavoring it with ketchup, brown sugar, vinegar, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, mustard, salt, and pepper. Remember that despite the cooking process, the sauce will retain about 40% of its alcohol, so serve the sauce on the side and offer an alternative to those who don’t wish to consume alcohol.
