First Things First: Taste Your Sauce

Prego Pasta Sauce, Tomato Sauce with Italian Sausage & Garlic, 44 Ounce ...

Warm up the pasta sauce, grab a spoonful, taste it. Think about what the sauce could use. Is it too watery? Acidic? Bland? Could it benefit from a little more fat or a handful of fresh herbs?

You might not know exactly, and thats okay. Its still good practice to taste the sauce first and try to figure it out. You dont want to dump a bunch of oregano into the sauce if that sauce already has a lot of oregano!

Now, then. Ready to punch up that pasta sauce? Lets get going!

The Healthy Oil That Isnt

Any cook will tell you that a little added fat can take a spaghetti sauce from so-so to downright delicious. And most people are under the impression that canola oil is a healthy choice.

If youre one of those people, we have bad news. Most canola oils come with health risks you may not have heard about.

First, any canola oil thats not labelled organic likely comes from GMO crops. In fact, about 90 percent of all canola oil from the United States AND Canada is GMO. This means, of course, youre potentially being exposed to dangerous glyphosates and other unknown dangers every time you take a bite of any product made with canola oil.

Since the canola oil listed in the ingredients list of Prego Traditional Spaghetti Sauce isnt organic theres a good chance that its GMO. But thats not the only problem with the canola oil in Prego or the only potential source of toxins.

Traditional canola oil is processed using chemicals that are known to be toxic. And while some say that none of those chemicals remain in the final product not everyone agrees that canola is safe, and questions still remain.

Cold-pressed or express-pressed canola oil isnt exposed to these chemicals during processing, but the canola oil in Prego isnt labelled as being either.

In addition vegetable oils, like canola oil, are high in omega-6s, which promote inflammation. Eating too many omega-6s and not enough omega-3s is linked to all kinds of diseases from heart disease to type-2 diabetes.

How To Make Spaghetti with Prego Sauce!

Prego pasta sauce is a popular choice for pizza toppings. Its flavorful and pairs well with many different types of cheese and vegetables. However, there are some important things to keep in mind when using Prego sauce on pizza.

First, be sure to heat the sauce before spreading it on the pizza crust. This will help it to spread more easily and prevent the crust from becoming soggy. Additionally, avoid using too much sauce. A thin layer is all you need to achieve a delicious and satisfying pizza.

Finally, be sure to add plenty of toppings. The sauce alone wont be enough to make your pizza taste great. Try adding pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, or other favorite toppings to create a custom pizza thats perfect for you.

Yes, you can reheat Prego pasta sauce since its made with tomatoes. It is also naturally acidic, meaning that its safe to reheat and wont spoil as quickly as other foods.

Halfway Homemade Spaghetti Sauce

Halfway Homemade Spaghetti Sauce starts with a jar of spaghetti sauce, has some awesome stuff added to it and becomes the best tasting homemade spaghetti sauce ever!

I am all about from scratch homemade recipes.

However, there are days when I just do not have time for homemade.

And thats OK. Seriously.

In fact, this Halfway Homemade Spaghetti Sauce is just for those days that you dont have time to make dinner from scratch.

Sometimes, all that matters is getting a good tasting meal that your kids will eat and that doesnt take more than 30 minutes from start to finish.

That is where this meal comes in place.

This Halfway Homemade Spaghetti Sauce takes 20 minutes to whip up.

That gives you enough time to cook the sauce, boil noodles, and get dinner on the table in 30 minutes.

Id say that is pretty dang good for a busy weeknight!

My kids LOVE this sauce.

In fact, my daughter prefers just a bowl of it.

Forget the noodles, just slide her over a bowl of spaghetti sauce.

Now because of this, I like to leave mine a bit meatier than most.

Its easier for her to eat as a meatier sauce than a soupy sauce.

Plus I like it a bit meatier than usual spaghetti sauce.

However, if you like yours a bit more saucy, just dont add as much meat.

I also love this Halfway Homemade Spaghetti Sauce because it freezes really well.

I tend to buy large quantities of meat at a big box store, then whip up a massive batch of this sauce and freeze it in small portions.

Look At The Ingredients

You can easily find the ingredients on the nutrition label.

Keep in mind that the ingredients are listed according to weight, with the highest amount listed first.

Choose pasta sauces that are made with tomatoes and other vegetables, herbs, and spices. Skip on white sauces or those with already added meat and cheese as these can be high in fat, sodium, and calories.

Many sauces have already added oil. Look for a sauce that uses extra virgin olive oil, instead of vegetable oils.

It is because extra virgin olive oil provides healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which is good cholesterol than oils with soybean or sunflower oil that are higher in omega-6 fatty acids.

You can also see in the ingredients if theres any added sugar. However, the word sugar is not always listed as sugar in the ingredient list.

Other common names for sugar include sucrose, high-fructose corn syrup, dextrose, maltose, corn syrup, rice syrup, and more. Choose a sauce that indicates no added sugar.

Tricks To Making A Great Sauce Even Better

Even the best store-bought spaghetti sauce might taste just a little bit better if you enhance it with a few extra ingredients, so dont be afraid to add a pinch of this or a dash of that to help make the flavor better.

  • Sugar. Is the sauce bitter? Try adding just a pinch of sugar in the mix to help neutralize the acidity.

In Italy, typical homemade tomato sauce known as conserva di Pomodoro or passata di pomodoro is quite simple and plain. You remove the tomato skins, use a food mill to grind the tomatoes, add some basil and olive oil, and cook. Thats it.

Other ingredients are added later, once the sauce has been canned and then re-opened for use. Many add in salt, pepper, onions, garlic and any preferred spices.

  • Garlic & Onions. Onions and garlic in powder form or even pressed is a good way to add some pizzazz to a sauce, but make sure you sauté them on low heat for a few minutes to prevent them from causing heartburn.

Before you add the sauce, pour in about a Tablespoon or so of water and turn the heat up to let it evaporate this is done by many in Italy to help make the onions and garlic more digestible.

  • Spices. Add some of your favorite spices to the mix such as oregano, salvia, chili powder or thyme.
  • Meat. Browned meat will turn that sauce into a ragu, which is what tomato sauce with meat is called in Italy.
