Henry’s Hot Sauce Carolina Reaper

THE END Hot Sauce | The Worlds Hottest Hot Sauce Challenge | GONE WRONG! WING EDITION

Scoville units: ~1 millionPeppers used: Carolina Reaper

Unlike a lot of these other hot sauces that seem to come from the mind of a slightly insane dude working from his kitchen, Henrys Hot Sauce is courtesy of an honest-to-god Virginia pepper farm. There, in the Shenandoah Valley, is apparently located the most limestone-rich soil for growing the most perfect hot peppersones the Henry family has cultivated from the world over. No surprise, Henrys sauces use 100% homegrown peppers , and are usually based around one single pepper varietal, like Carolina Reaper, their most extreme offering. Buy it here.

Note: if you go to Henry’s website you’ll see Carolina Reaper listed as “limited edition.” This is mainly because making sauces with 100% your own ingredients leads to small batches, not because these products are of the only-100-bottles-made-then-gone-forever nature.

Safety And The Carolina Reaper

First, this is not your average pepper. Have you ever chopped up a jalapeno and then accidentally rubbed your eyes? It is terrible. It is a whole different ballgame with this pepper and you dont want to play. Use gloves when handling this pepper. If you dont, you may regret it.

We also put this in your oven to broil for a short while and you need to be a bit careful with this, as well. The peppers are hot! When you heat them up, they give off fumes. Make sure you have some ventilation handy and be careful of having any kids or pets around.

Seriously, people. Use your common sense and have a bit of respect for this pepper.

Get Bitten Black Mamba Six Hot Sauce: 6 Million Scoville Units

This looks like barbecue sauce, but we can promise you its much hotter. CaJohns Get Bitten Black Mamba Six is made with chocolate habaneros, which arent actually chocolate-flavored and average 425,000 Scoville units. The real heat comes from 6million-Scoville-unit capsaicin extract. The mission? Pain with a never-ending wave of venomous fire. One brave Amazon reviewer says he uses it on breakfast and if youre tired in the morning, you wont be after eating this stuff.

What Ingredients Make Hot Sauce Hot

The Worlds Hottest Hot Sauces (& Where to Buy Them)

If hot sauce is made of hot peppers and liquid, then it probably goes without saying that the hot peppers are responsible for bringing the heat that singes your sinuses. Thats because hot peppers naturally contain a chemical compound called capsaicin. While milder peppers, like Pepperoncini and Jalapeños, contain lower concentrations of capsaicin, their super-spicy counterparts, like Ghost Peppers and Reapers, are chock full of this crazy-hot compound. So, hot sauces made with milder peppers tend to be more mild, while hot sauces made with the worlds hottest peppers are almost inedible . Some hot sauce producers, like the super spice scientists at Pepper Palace, take things to the next level by throwing some pepper extract, which is just pure capsaicin, in the mix to make extreme hot sauces for only the most hardcore chiliheads.

The Worlds 10 Spiciest Hot Sauces

Dave’s Gourmet Ghost Pepper Sauce

Hot sauce those two words alone can get some folks mouths watering, while they make others cringe. Some never leave home without a bottle of the stuff somewhere on their person others fear even brief exposure to a pickled jalapeño on their nachos.

So what is it about spicy food that causes such divisiveness? Like all foods, some love it and some hate it. And even among the ranks of spicy food lovers, some can only tolerate a dash or two of Tabasco while others head over to their local wing joint weekly for their XXXX-Mindkiller Special.

For those of you in the latter group, like these guys, this list is for you. We tracked down the absolute spiciest hot sauces out there, ranked them according to Scoville units , and provided you with ways to order them directly to your door. But be careful: these sauces are spicy

For a bit of perspective, lets take a look at the hot sauce standard-bearer: Tabasco. The original version of the popular hot sauce contains at most about 5,000 Scoville units, about as many as youd find in your average jalapeño. On the other end of the spectrum, Guinness World Records proclaims that the worlds hottest chile pepper is the Trinidad Scorpion “Butch T,” which clocks in at a whopping 1,463,700 Scoville units, nearly 300 times hotter than a jalapeño.

So fasten your seatbelt, folks. This is going to be a spicy ride. And if you think you know of a hotter sauce than those listed, let us know in the comments.

Scoville Hotness Units: 9,000,000

Made with 60% pure capsicum, Mad Dog 357 Plutonium No. 9 is said to be the hottest hot sauce in the world. The small bottle of hot sauce gets its spice from a thousand ounces of raw peppers processed until it got down to one ounce of extract left. Due to the extreme nature of this product, its not recommended that you consume this hot sauce directly and should be used as a food additive. Theres even a legal disclaimer promising that only someone who isnt drunk and not sound of mind is eating it, and that no one is going to sue Mad Dog for whatever happens thats how extreme the hot sauce is.

You can buy a small bottle of Mad Dog 357 Plutonium No. 9 at Mad Dogs online store for $100, exclusive of shipping.

Pure Capsaicin has a heat rating of around 16 million Scoville Units, which is the greatest degree of heat that can be achieved. What Is Capsaicin Made Of

Capsaicin is responsible for making hot peppers, and by extension, hot sauce, hot, but what exactly is it? For you science nerds out there, the official chemical formula for capsaicin is C18H27NO3. If that went right over your head, dont worry. In simpler terms, capsaicin is a combination of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen, but those seemingly harmless elements are arranged in such a way that could make a grown man cry. Scientists suspect that plants started producing capsaicin as a defense mechanism to prevent animals from eating them. Those plants were sorely mistaken, since that spicy stuff is just what so many of us cravejokes on you, mother nature!

Da Bomb Beyond Insanity 135000 Shus

Well-hated in the hot sauce community for years and years, Da Bomb is notorious for its aggressive heat. Yes, weve tried it, and it is just as bad-tasting and brutally spicy as all the unfortunate Hot Ones guests make it seem.

The reason for this is that the ingredients in Da Bomb are more an effort to shock you, while the flavor is just an afterthought. The heat comes from habaneros, but also pepper extract, which gives it an almost metallic, battery-acid flavor.

It isnt good.

It doesnt need to be in anyones fridge. But theyve probably sold millions of the dang bottles. Oh well, thankfully there are other sauces that are even hotter, but with delicious flavor, too.

Da Bomb comes in at a relatively tame 135,000 SHUs on the Scoville scale, though we think that it tastes hotter. This can happen, since the Scoville scale doesnt always tell the whole store for how a hot sauces heat level feels. Da Bomb burns on the same level as the Last Dab hot sauces, though those claim to be 10X hotter on the Scoville scale. *shrug*

Predator Great White Shark Hot Sauce

There’s a great term called benign masochism that you see tossed around to describe people who enjoy things like hot sauce. It’s a way to get your thrills without facing any real danger. Like diving in a shark cage. Or dripping some Predator Great White Shark on your food.

For fans of this hot sauce, every week is shark week! This stuff is only 175,000 Scoville units, so even though it’s very hot, the great white of hot sauce is still at the bottom of this list. On , a reviewer had this to say about how he uses Predator, “I use this stuff whenever I want to reliably adjust the heat of a dish or drink without having to dump in a gallon of sauce. It’s very efficient. I’d say about 5 drops of this stuff will warm up a gallon of bloody mary mix about as much as an entire bottle of tobasco would.”

This hot sauce contains vinegar, habaneros, papaya, bananas, and pineapple. No sharks were harmed in the making of this hot sauce.

Blair’s Mega Death Sauce With Liquid Fury

World’s Hottest Sauce Challenge

Blair’s Mega Death Hot sauce with Liquid Fury is supposed to be used very sparingly, probably because it is 550,000 on the Scoville scale.

Finding out what exactly “liquid fury” means is nearly impossible, but this product does contain molasses which is said to mask the liquid fury that comes after. Whatever liquid fury is, it doesn’t sound good, and this hot sauce, apparently, packs a ton of it. Blair’s Mega Death Hot sauce with Liquid Fury is said to be 650 times hotter than a jalapeno. On a review for this sauce, Mark Belanger writes “Great sauce. Feels like getting shot in the tongue. Not that I ever got shot in the tongue but I imagine that’s how it would feel.” You can even buy special edition bottles that arrive in a little coffin box with a skull keychain. Adorable.

Can Hot Sauce Kill You

It is possible to overdose on capsaicin, the chemical that makes chili peppers hot. However, the only way you can die from eating hot sauce is if the sauce if sufficiently hot and you eat it in sufficient quantity.

A study performed in 1980 calculated that it would take consuming 3 pounds of superhot pepper powder to kill a person weighing 150 pounds. It is highly unlikely anyone could consume that amount, as their body would react before reaching such a limit.

There have been reports of people ending up in the hospital in extreme situations after eating superhot chili peppers, particularly those with previous medical conditions.

There is also the story of a man who burned a hole in his esophagus from eating super hot peppers, but that was from vomiting, not from the peppers themselves.

While it is true that eating extremely hot peppers and hot sauces can cause vomiting, nausea and stomach pain, the reality is that they cannot tear or burn through any of your body parts.

Meet Your Maker Retribution Sauce: 5 Million Scoville Units

Heavenly Heat makes Meet Your Maker Retribution Sauce with a blend of 5 million-Scoville-unit ghost pepper extract, fresh ghost peppers and dried ground ghost peppers. Hauntingly enough, it even comes in a coffin-shaped box. Use sparingly, as just three drops will add a huge dose of heat to eight quarts of chili. Dont be like this person on Reddit, who put three drops on one taco, making it the single spiciest mistake of my life even though they will probably do it again, for science and stuff.

How To Measure Hot Sauce Heat: Meet The Scoville Heat Scale

Look on the back of most hot sauces these days and youll likely see a ridiculously high number of Scoville units .

100,000? 35,000? What does it all mean?

The Scoville scale, named for pharmacist Wilbur Scoville, is a measurement of the spiciness of chili peppers based on the concentration of capsaicinoids. Capsaicinoids, the most commonly known is capsaicin, are compounds that activate our taste buds to alert our body that what were consuming is pungent, spicy, or hot. The Scoville scale then assigns a numerical value to the level of pungency of a pepper.

For reference, bell peppers are extremely low on the scale, maxing out at around 100. Jalapeños can range anywhere from 3,500 to about 8,000. Carolina Reaper commonly known as the spiciest pepper cultivar maxed out at 2,200,000. But the Scoville scale doesnt stop there. Below youll find that the hottest hot sauces can clock in much higher than that.

But, for the record, the Scoville scale only applies to the pepper in its dry form. As a sauce, the peppers pungency is diluted so the impact can vary. Still, if a hot sauce advertises a ridiculously high Scoville number, theres a good chance that hot sauce is hot.
