3 Ingredient Easy Teriyaki Sauce Recipe

You can get this sauce at any supermarket in your city since it is very common. Otherwise, you can get it on online supermarkets such as Amazon, Walmart and others. Even though you can buy it in its original bottle, our recommendation is to make the sauce yourself.

There is nothing compared to making your own recipes, although it is true that buying it saves us time.

But here is the good news: this recipe is super simple and easy-to-make, so you will not overwhelm yourself with long hours of cooking.

There are several methods used to prepare Teriyaki sauce, that is why there are different versions. The recipe we show you today is the classic one. We will explain other ways of preparing it below.

How To Make Vegan Teriyaki Sauce

You will find full instructions and measurements in the recipe card at the bottom of the post. This is a summary of the process to go along with the process photos.

  • Add sesame oil, water, soy sauce, light brown sugar, maple syrup, crushed garlic and finely grated ginger to a saucepan.
  • Bring to a boil stirring all the while and then reduce heat and simmer for around 5 minutes.
  • While the sauce is simmering, mix up a cornstarch slurry by adding cornstarch and cold water to a measuring jug and whisking together until smooth.
  • Add the cornstarch slurry to the teriyaki sauce in the saucepan and whisk it in. Let it simmer, stirring all the while for a few minutes until the sauce has thickened.
  • Remove from the heat and let it cool.

How To Use Teriyaki Sauce

Now that Ive shown you have easy it can be to make this delicious sauce, I want to make sure you know how to use it.

As I stir fry up veggies I will add this homemade sauce towards the end and give a quick saute. Its a quick favorite for use.

You can easily find teriyaki sauce at your local grocer, attesting to its large popularity here in the states, but once you learn how to make it at home, youll find no reason to purchase the store bought stuff again. Especially when you can spice it up like I do.

I do love the sweetness of a good teriyaki, but I like a spicier version even more so. I find a little bit of heat helps to balance out the sweetness, and it goes perfectly with many different stars of your dish.

How Do You Thicken Teriyaki Sauce

Step 3: In a bowl, mix together the corn starch and cold water to make the slurry.

This is what helps get the sauce to the desired thickness.

It make the sauce that perfect sticky thick texture just like a store bought sauce.

Your sauce will start out thin.

The slurry will thicken it up quickly!

Step 4: Add the corn starch slurry to the teriyaki sauce and whisk or stir for 3 5 minutes, as the sauce thickens.

Once the teriyaki sauce is finished, use it as marinade or pour it on your favorite stir fry recipe.

How To Thicken Teriyaki Sauce

Americanized teriyaki sauce is very thick and syrupy compared to the teriyaki sauce in Japan. Japanese teriyaki sauce is reduced in the pan until it becomes thicker consistency. We do not use cornstarch or honey, like other non-Japanese versions.

Of course, there is no strict rule on the recipe, you can still make a thick sauce by adding a mixture of 2 Tbsp water and 1 Tbsp cornstarch or potato starch if thats your preference.

In a nutshell, there is no one perfect teriyaki sauce that fits all kinds of recipes. Adjust the ratio of ingredients each time you make a teriyaki recipe. Homemade teriyaki sauce is healthier than store-bought ones since it does not contain any additives.

The wonderful thing about teriyaki sauce is its versatility. You can use it as a marinade or a glaze, and make many of your favorite family dishes like teriyaki chicken, teriyaki salmon to beef teriyaki. How To Prep Your Fresh Ingredients

This sauce is very easy to make. Preparing the ginger and garlic is the only semi-tedious step.

To grate ginger: You dont have to peel your ginger first if youre using a fine grater . Heres my favorite tool for the task .

To peel and mince garlic: You can use a garlic press or mince it by hand. Im all for the garlic press.

Garlic and ginger shortcuts: Unfortunately, I couldnt find any that work. I dont ever recommend using store-bought minced garlic. It isnt the same. I also tried this sauce with ginger and garlic powder instead of fresh , and it wasnt nearly as good. In fact, it bordered on gross. Fresh is best!

How To Make Teriyaki Chicken

This recipe is best made with boneless skinless chicken thighs. While you can also use boneless skinless chicken breasts, chicken thighs are generally more tender, flavorful and juicy.

  • Prep the sauce. In a medium sized bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, sake, mirin and honey until everything is well combined. Set this aside.
  • Prep and cook the chicken. Dice the chicken thighs into bite size pieces. Then, heat the oil in a large saute pan or wok over medium high heat. Add in the chicken and stir fry for 3-4 minutes, until it becomes a golden brown.
  • Add the sauce. Give the sauce a quick whisk then stir it in with the chicken. Continue cooking and let it simmer for about 4-5 minutes until the sauce has thickened.
  • Serve. Serve on top a fresh bed of rice and steamed broccoli. Garnish with optional diced green onions and sesame seeds.

    How To Thicken Your Sauce

    This 3 ingredient Teriyaki condiment is on the thinner side so that you can add it to the food that you want to cook. That way it will thicken quickly!

    A Japanese teriyaki sauce is usually only prepared when a dish is cooked, such as a teriyaki chicken.

    So when the chicken cooks in the quickly prepared teriyaki sauce, the sauce thickens.

    However, if you want the DIY sauce to turn out thicker, you can do that by cooking the sauce down further until you are satisfied with the thickness.

    Keep in mind that the sauce will thicken even further once it has cooled down.

    I do not recommend thickening your teriyaki sauce with cornstarch or xanthan gum because it will make it difficult to use it further in your cooking. Besides, I personally dislike the starchy effect.

    How To Make Homemade Teriyaki Sauce

    Once youve assembled your ingredients, youve done the most difficult part of this recipe. When it comes to actually making the sauce, youre basically just stirring the ingredients together.

  • First, youll whisk together a little water and cornstarch. Whisking your cornstarch with water before adding it to the rest of the ingredients will prevent cornstarch lumps from forming, and the mixture will help thicken the sauce.
  • Then youll combine the cornstarch mixture and all the other ingredients in a medium pot and bring to a simmer. Heads up, keep a close eye on your sauce when it starts to steam. This sauce can boil over very quickly once it starts to simmer, so be ready to turn down the heat.
  • Simmer, stirring occasionally, until sauce is thickened and syrupy. Depending on the size of the pot youre using, this will take 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Then let it cool slightly and use or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
