What To Make With Your Old Bay Hot Sauce

OLD BAY HOT SAUCE Oven Baked BBQ Chicken Thighs Recipe

Old Bay is a versatile spice mix. You know this. We know this. But what you may not have considered is the versatility of Old Bay hot sauce! Any way you can use regular hot sauce, you can use this Maryland-style hot sauce, and there are a LOT of ways to use regular hot sauce! So, where to put this nectar of the gods to use? We’ve got a few ideas.

1. Make a wing sauce

A little butter is all you need to add to this delicious sauce to come up with a winning chicken wing! We like the simplicity of this recipe, though we might skip the garlic powder since the spices are already present in the Old Bay. Just melt a cup of butter, take it off the heat, and add a cup and a third of the Old Bay hot sauce.

2. Add to eggs

Eggs and hot sauce, now that’s a classic combo! Pour it out onto your scrambled eggs, or go a little fancier and make some spicy deviled eggs.

We’re salivating already! Buy the 5 oz size here.

3. Make a spicy Thousand Island dressing

We love a spicy substitute! This Thousand Island dressing recipe calls for chili sauce, but we bet it would be even better if you used two tablespoons of Old Bay hot sauce instead.

4. Add flavor to raw oysters

No recipe needed here! Old Bay is famous for how it perks up seafood, and Old Bay hot sauce will pair with raw oysters perfectly. Just dollop it on.

Yeah, you’re gonna want this much! Buy the 64 oz size here.

5. Enjoy a spicy cocktail

6. Whip up a spicy homemade hummus

Can I Make My Own Old Bay Seasoning

This Old Bay Shrimp isnt called Old Bay Shrimp for nothing -it is ALL about the complex spice blend! There are many copycat, do it yourself Old Bay seasoning mix recipes out there, but Old Bay survived since 1939 for a reason. In my opinion, Old Bay seasoning isnt like making your own taco seasoning, after all, it does boast 18 different herbs/spices such as paprika, celery salt, bay leaves, thyme, cayenne, dry mustard, nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, etc.

So if you dont own the bright yellow can with a bold blue stripe, then I suggest investing in some. Not only does it go great with anything seafood and produce stellar Old Bay Shrimp, but add a sprinkle to French fries, chicken, hamburgers and sandwiches, dips, potatoes, veggies, pizza, popcorn, eggs, soups and immediately delishify your plate!

How To Make Old Bay Wings

1. Preheat the air fryer to 350F. In a large mixing bowl, toss the wings with salt, pepper, and a light dusting of Old Bay Seasoning.

2. Arrange the chicken wings in the air fryer basket in a single layer . Spritz lightly with olive oil and air fry for 20 minutes, flipping halfway through.

3. When the wings are finished cooking, transfer them to a serving bowl or plate. I like to finish them with a generous coating of Old Bay!

Pro-Tips While Cooking In The Air Fryer:

  • If you are making more than one batch, preheat the oven to 250 and place the cooked wings on a baking sheet to keep warm while you fry up the remainder of your wings.
  • When using the air-fryer, do your best to not crowd the wings in the air fryer and keep everything in a single layer spaced out. This will allow your wings to become crispy.
  • If you overcrowd the wings they will cook unevenly and just stream up instead of becoming crispy. If you overcrowd the wings they will cook unevenly and just stream up instead of becoming crispy.

The Story Of Old Bay Hot Sauce

Did you get caught up in the Old Bay Hot Sauce craze? McCormick released a limited batch of sauce that sold out in about two hours. Its become such a cult item that you can buy it on eBay for $14. I just cant justify forking over $14 for something that costs $4.

What makes Old Bay hot sauce so good? In my opinion, its the nostalgic taste of Old Bay Seasoning. Old Bay seasoning is a classic seasoning used on seafood, bloody marys, and more. Its tangy flavor is recognizable, and across the US its almost in every grocery.

All these reasons pushed me into trying to make my own version of this sauce, and its probably better than what they sell in the bottle.

And its DEFINITELY going to sell out again.

If youve ever eaten a meal in or near the state of Maryland, theres a pretty strong chance that some Old Bay seasoning was on the table or even already sprinkled onto the food. So if you, a friend, or a loved one happen to have an Old Bay obsession, you should alert them to the existence of McCormicks Old Bay Hot Sauce ASAP. Old Bay Shrimp Recipe

Often Old Bay Shrimp is boiled/steamed in its shell along with Old Bay Seasoning, beer and water but I wanted to create a quick stir fried or grilled version to minimize the work and maximize the freshness, and a recipe that doesnt require your family and guests to have to peel and eat.

Instead, I used large shrimp that has been peeled and deveiened to cut down on prep time. And bonus, by using defrosted frozen shrimp, you can make this Old Bay Shrimp whenever the cravings strike! Or whenever you want a 30 minute dinner, in which only 20 minutes of that time is hands off marinating!

Questions You Might Have About Air Fryer Wings:

Yes! One of my favorite things about the air fryer is that you dont need to thaw the meat before cooking it. Cook your frozen wings as instructed in the recipe, but increase the cook time by about 30 minutes.

Air fryers are great for keeping crispy foods crispy especially when it comes to reheating them. Preheat your air fryer to 350s F and heat the wings for 3-4 minutes. Your reheated chicken wings will taste just as crispy as the night before!

Old Bay Seasoning is a blend of celery salt, paprika, black pepper, cayenne pepper, cinnamon, ginger, and a variety of other spices. Its perfect for shrimp, crab, crab boil, fish, fries, chicken, and more!

You can substitute whatever type of chicken youd like to use to what best suits your preference.1) Preheat your air fryer to 350 degrees F.2) Prepare chicken tenders as instructed.3) Place in the air fryer and cook for 10 minutes.

4) Flip over and cook for 5 more minutes.5) Toss in more Old Bay and serve.Note: When cooking with different cuts of chicken, you may need to increase cook time to ensure it is cooked through appropriately.

History Of Old Bay Seasoning

Old Bay Hot Sauce Sold Out, So I Made My Own! | Old Bay Hot Sauce Recipe

The story goes that in 1939, a German immigrant named Gustav Brunn started the Baltimore Spice Company in downtown Baltimore. Having fled Nazi Germany in 1937 with only a small spice grinder, Brunn created “Delicious Brand Shrimp and Crab Seasoning.” This spice blend was meant to service the needs of the nearby seafood market and was later renamed Old Bay seasoning, after the Old Bay Line passenger ship that traveled the waters of the Chesapeake Bay in the early 1900s. In 1990, the spice giant McCormick & Co. purchased the rights to Old Bay, continuing to offer it in its classic yellow can as we know it today.

Kasondra Van Treeck, photo editor: There are so many seasonings in there I would have to think about what I am putting this on its more than just another hot sauce.

Nick Kindelsperger, food writer: I find it hilarious the first ingredient is hot sauce. It is a very distinctive mix, one that I can see fans of Old Bay latching on to. But I dont see this converting many people. It has a strong celery-seed profile, which I think would clash with a number of foods. However, I can imagine it being a fine bloody mary mixer.

According to Old Bay, its next batch of hot sauce will go on sale online soon.

We so often spend money on pre-made spice blends because we like that someone else has taken the guesswork out of creating great flavor combinations.

Thats ok! Life can be hectic and we are in a hurry most of the time. Store-bought spice blends are an easy way to make dinner prep a bit faster.

Yet spice blends like apple pie spice, seasoning salt, steak rub, taco seasoning, and seafood seasoning can easily be made at home and stored in old spice jars.
