Stir fry is one of my favorite easy meals. Stir fries are healthy and so versatile. You can easily switch up the protein and veggies to keep the flavors new and interesting!
I like to make my own stir fry sauce rather than buying it at the store because I can control the ingredients and flavors. Plus, its so simple to make, there really is no reason not to make your own. Its healthier and takes no more than ten minutes.
This easy recipe is perfect for using in chicken stir fry, beef stir fry, vegetable stir fry or shrimp stir fry. Or, use tofu or chickpeas for your protein to make a vegetarian meal. Serve your stir fry over brown rice, Instant Pot white rice or Instant Pot brown rice for a wholesome and tasty meal.
Two Substitutes For Soy Sauce
In this stir fry sauce we used regular soy sauce. We typically use regular soy sauce instead of low sodium, because you want your sauce to fully season the stir fry. Soy sauce is not gluten free and is full of soy, so what if you avoid these ingredients? There are two great substitutes for soy sauce:
- Tamari : Tamari is also made from soy: its specifically a Japanese type of soy sauce. The biggest difference between soy sauce vs tamari is that tamari contains little to no wheat. Check the label to make sure! In terms of flavor, tamari is slightly less salty than soy sauce, so you may need to use a little more to taste.
- Coconut aminos : Working around a soy allergy? No problem. Coconut aminos contains no soy and has a very similar flavor to soy sauce. Substitute coconut aminos for soy sauce in a 1:1 ratio, but its slightly less salty to you may need to add a little salt to taste.
How To Use This Easy Stir Fry Sauce
This stir fry sauce works very well in a stir fry: youll just need to know a few things before you add it!
- The quantity works for a 4 serving stir fry. It coats all the vegetables and protein, but doesnt have lots of excess.
- Add the sauce AFTER the veggies are done: turn off the heat! Heres the important part. Cook all the veggies, then turn off the heat. Then add the sauce, and stir until it thickens. If you add the sauce to the hot pan, it will all evaporate, leaving no silky sauce left behind.

I often make the sauce before I start cooking my stir fry, so that is ready to go when I need it.
You can either cook your ingredients in this sauce, or add it at the end of cook time.
If you are unsure of how much to use, I recommend cooking your ingredients first in sesame oil, then adding this sauce to taste in the last 3-5 minutes of cook time.
Start with a few tablespoons and add from there.
Again, this is a very concentrated 3 ingredient sauce, and a little bit will go a long way!

How Long Does Stir
This recipe makes enough stir-fry sauce for about four batches of stir-fry. The sauce will last for up to two weeks in the fridge and for two months in the freezer make sure to give the sauce a stir before you use it. If you like, you can portion it into an ice cube tray to freeze, then pull out just what you need.
Why Dried Garlic And Ginger
It might seem strange to use powdered garlic and ginger here, but dried instead of fresh means the sauce will last much longer in the refrigerator or the freezer. Also, because the sauce is cooked just briefly at the end of stir-frying, fresh ginger and garlic wouldnt cook long enough to lose their raw texture and flavors. For an extra punch of ginger and garlic, stir-fry some fresh ginger and garlic until softened before adding the sauce at the end.

A great stir fry is all in the sauce which is why our chicken and broccoli stir fry is so popular! The ingredients for this beef stir fry sauce will surprise you and you probably already have them in the refrigerator. The combination is sweet, savory and smoky. It caramelizes on the beef for tantalizing Asian BBQ flavor.
Keep in mind if you use a sweet BBQ sauce, the sauce will be considerably sweeter which is why we opted to use an original BBQ sauce. Also, use Tamari soy sauce to make this a gluten free beef stir fry!
The Best Way To Make Do
Combine the elements. In a small bowl, whisk the stir fry sauce elements till theyre easy. Eliminate all of the lumps now or there will probably be no saving it later.

Enter my Easy Homemade Sir Fry Sauce. This quick and easy sauce is made using just 6 simple ingredients: soy sauce, sesame oil, lime juice, chilli flakes, garlic and fresh ginger.

This dish is not only quick and easy, but it’s so delicious! It tastes just as good as stir fry dishes we’ve had at fancy restaurants. The base 3-ingredient stir fry sauce is perfect as is: It’s sweet and salty with a deeply savory flavor, and it was thick enough to coat the meat, vegetables, and noodles. Stir Fry Sauce Recipe Tips And Faqs
1. What kind of vinegar should I use? I used rice vinegar when making this recipe. You can also try substituting white distilled vinegar or apple cider vinegar.
2. What kind of barbecue sauce should I use?
Barbecue Sauce: Some of you have very strong opinions regarding barbecue sauce. You can use your favorite brand of barbecue sauce, make homemade barbecue sauce, or use a tablespoon of hoisin sauce instead.
3. Do I have to use sesame oil? This recipe calls for sesame oil because it adds so much flavor to the stir fry sauce but it can be made without it or substitute the sesame oil with olive oil.
4. Can I substitute another kind of liquid? For this recipe, I used chicken broth for the liquid. You can substitute the chicken broth with vegetable broth for a vegetarian version. Or change the flavor by using orange juice or pineapple juice instead.
5. I dont have any minced garlic. Can I use garlic powder instead? To substitute the 3 teaspoons of minced garlic with 3/4 teaspoon of garlic powder. If you love garlic, you can increase the amount of minced garlic in this recipe.
6. How can I use freshly grated ginger instead?
I made this stir fry sauce with dried, ground ginger because that is what I typically have on hand. It would be fabulous with freshly grated ginger though. Use 3-4 teaspoons of grated ginger instead. Again, if you love ginger, you can up the amount you use.

Best Vegetables For Stir Fries
When I make a stir fry I basically clean out my vegetable drawer with whatever I have in there. However, if you are heading to the grocery store or produce stand, then consider picking up the following:
- Asparagus cut into 1-2 inch pieces
- Broccoli crowns cut into bite size pieces
- Cauliflower crowns
- Bell peppers green, yellow, red peppers sliced into chunks
- Snow or Snap peas or green beans cut into bite size pieces
- Onion Diced yellow onion
- Carrots cut into bite size pieces
- Bok choy diced
- Chili sauce like Sriracha
How To Thicken The Sauce
For this recipe I used one tablespoon or cornstarch to slightly thicken the sauce, which can be adjusted to your preference.
Keep in mind that cornstarch does add carbohydrates. 7 carbs to be exact, which is minimal in my opinion, so I use it in this sauce.
For an alternative to cornstarch, the following can be substituted:
- Arrowroot has about 6 carbs per tablespoon
- Ground Chia Seeds zero carbs and adds 5 grams of fiber
- Psyllium Husk Powder same as chia seeds

Can I Make Vegetarian/vegan/gluten
The short answer is: yes!
To make vegetarian/vegan stir-fry sauce:
- Substitute vegetable or mushroom stock for the chicken stock.
- Substitute vegetarian oyster sauce for the oyster sauce .
To make gluten-free stir-fry sauce:
- The dark soy sauce is in the recipe mainly for color, so simply omit it. The color wont be quite as brown, but itll still have good flavor.
- Use a gluten-free oyster sauce. Lee Kum Kee brand makes one that we use for gluten-free cooking!
Double Up And Use This Sauce As A Marinade
You can quickly add flavor to protein like chicken or beef by using this sauce as a marinade too. Simply add the meat to the sauce and let it soak in the flavors for about 15-20 minutes before cooking.
In addition, this can also use this as a basting sauce. This is particularly tasty over grilled shrimp.

The Ultimate Meal Prep
When hungry walk-ins are expecting their orders in ten minutes or less, its good to have an arsenal of shortcuts to make the process easier. One such shortcut was having an all-purpose brown sauce on hand to use as a base for many dishes, including the ever-popular Beef and Broccoli.
This ensured that anyone working at the wok station would make the same great-tasting dishes every single time. Consistency and speed are two very important requirements for a good Chinese restaurant, after all.

How To Use This Stir
1. Marinate Your Protein:

Ill prepare the vegetables ahead of time, slicing celery, carrots, bell peppers, snow peas, onions, mushrooms, zucchini, eggplant, and/or broccoli. Use whatever you like and make sure to cut the vegetables small/thinly enough so that theyll cook quickly .
4. Prepare Your Thickener:
2 tablespoons water mixed with 2 tablespoons cornstarch.
5. Sear Meat:
Add 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil to your hot wok . Add the meat, sear on both sides, and set aside.
6. Assemble Stir-fry
Add another tablespoon of oil and add the garlic and ginger.
After a few seconds, add the vegetables and stir fry for 1 minute or until just softened.
Add about 2/3 cup of stir fry sauce , and heat until simmering
And add in the seared meat.
Bring to a boil and stir in the cornstarch slurry until the sauce is thick enough to coat a spoon . Add the green parts of your scallions , and cook for another 15 to 20 seconds.
