What Is The Best Barbecue Sauce Lets Discuss

Yep, I am going there. BBQ sauce is both regional and personal, and I do have a favorite.

I grew up on Kansas City barbecue, and every time Ben and I visit, grabbing a meal at a local BBQ joint isnt an optional activity we try to squeeze inits one of the first stops we make the moment we land at the airport.

Ive had the pleasure of munching barbecue in different regions of the country, and while I respect and enjoy the different flavors and characteristics of each, Kansas Citystyle barbecue sauce is my forever favorite.

If youve had Sweet Baby Rays or KC Masterpiece brand BBQ sauce, youve experienced a hint of just how good Kansas City BBQ sauce can be. That said, as Ive started reading more labels in recent years, the bottled barbecue sauce brands are LOADED with sugar .

Craving some barbecue but not wanting to rely on the the sugary stuff, I decided to see if I could make my own homemade barbecue sauce for ribs, pulled pork, and, as I quickly discovered while making and tasting this sauce, for licking right off the spoon!

Skip the bottled stuff. By using real, unprocessed ingredients, youll have an award winning barbecue sauce recipe that tastes, well, homemade.

Rivers Smokehouse Mustard Barbeque Sauce

Why youll love it:

Mustard based barbeque sauces are a truly unique beast, providing a wholly different flavor from most other barbeque sauces. This stuff is perfect for ribs and chicken, and makes for an excellent break from the norm if youve never tried it.

What we didnt like

  • Not great on beef.
  • Can be an acquired taste.

The benefits of having a good mustard barbeque sauce on hand cant be overstated. If you can find a good one, it has a strong chance of becoming your absolute favorite sauce to cook some foods. Particularly, BBQ short ribs.

To be frank, this is not my favorite mustard barbeque sauce. That honor goes to a little batch made sauce only sold locally in southern Alabama. However, this is a worthy replacement in terms of sauces that are widely available and easy to procure pretty much anywhere in the US.

The tangy, mustardy goodness goes well with a lot of things. Its an excellent dipping sauce for everything from chicken tenders and French fries to a ham sandwich. But, its true power lies in using it as a marinade or mopping sauce, and as mentioned it goes especially well with pork and chicken Im not a fan when it comes to beef.

If youre looking for something a little different than the norm, this is an excellent choice.

A Tasty Bbq Sauce Recipe

When you hear barbecue sauce you might think of summer but this recipe can be used in any season.

This sauce might be the best barbecue sauce recipe for ribs but you can also eat it with:

  • Mexican burger put some on your burger instead of salsa
  • Bacon burger another great burger to add your barbecue sauce
  • Steak fries grill this amazing steak on the grill and serve with homemade fries and this barbecue sauce
  • Spare ribs either on the barbecue, in a slow cooker, or Air Fryer ribs

Because you use a bit of brown sugar barbecue sauce will caramelize when it reaches about 320/160.

When you use barbecue sauce with a barbecue do not rub the sauce directly on the meat.

Make sure the meat is done and then bast the sauce on the meat for the last 10 minutes before you take the meat off the barbecue.

If you put it on too early the sauce can be too thick and will prevent the meat from getting done.

When you want to use the barbecue sauce take out the amount of sauce you need.

Do not dip a brush in the jar to put it on the meat if you want to keep your sauce fresh.

What To Look For When Buying A Bbq Sauce For Pulled Pork

    12 Best Barbecue Sauce Brands

However, before you can decide on what your personal preference is, there are a few features that you should look for in a good BBQ sauce for pulled pork.

  • Flavor
  • There are two basic flavors that all BBQ sauces come inone being simply sweet, and the other sweet but with a hint of tangy.

The sweet BBQ sauces simply contain tomatoes and sugar, or sometimes brown sugar as well, in them.

Whereas tangy sauces will also have added vinegar in them. This also makes them a little more runny than the sweet BBQ sauces.

But when it comes to pulled pork, it is best suited to sweeter BBQ sauces. Whether its flavors like maple or honey, the taste of pork goes best with sweet sauces.

  • Consistency
  • Of course, a sauces consistency depends on what flavor you are picking.

For instance, a tangier sauce will be a little runny because of the vinegar in it. In contrast, sweeter sauces could be more dip-like.

Since we recommend using sweet sauces for your pork, your BBQ sauce should then be thicker.

But if the sauce you buy is too thick to suit you, you can always thin it out.

  • Price
  • Many people will assume that the cheaper the sauce, the lesser its flavor quality.

Thats not at all true. In our opinion, if a sauce is expensive, it might simply be because of either a brand name or because it is shipped from afar.

Therefore, when looking for a good BBQ sauce for your pork, you should look into the quality by listing its reviews instead of simply trusting the high price.

What Makes The Best Barbecue Sauce

While sampling all these sauces , our Test Kitchen kept these qualities in mind:

    • Flavor: While there are lots of variations on barbecue sauce, a good all-purpose sauce should be tangy, a bit sweet and taste good enough to lick off your fingers.
    • Texture: A good barbecue sauce should be smooth and thick enough to coat everything from ribs to grilled chicken. It shouldnt be overly sticky or gooey.
    • Appearance: How does the sauce look? Does it look like something delicious enought to put on your pulled pork sandwich?

    Heinz Sticky Barbecue Sauce

Easy Barbecue Sauce Recipe – The Best Homemade BBQ Sauce ever

It was a bit of a surprise when this bottle placed third in our taste test we had so many bottles made by ‘artisanal’ producers we assumed something like Heinz would be relegated to the back of the list. However, it just goes to show that theres a reason the company has been in business for 150 years they know how to tickle our taste buds. Everyone on the panel agreed it was the best all-rounder, and would please everyone at a party thanks to its balanced flavour. It wasnt too smoky, too hot, too spiced or too sweet and had a nice authentically woody taste from the smoke.

    Teriyaki Japanese Hawaiian And Korean

Theres a whole world of barbecue sauces that dont fit into the above four categories, many of which take inspiration from the barbecue traditions of other cultures. Teriyaki sauce, for example, leads with high concentrations of sugar, sometimes pineapple and citrus, honey, soy sauce, and ginger. Hawaiian barbecue sauce is ultrasweet with high acidity. And Im a sucker for Korean barbecue sauce, which can have a high sugar content but is loaded with green onion, ginger, onion, black pepper, and sesame oil.

    Sauces to try:

    • Bachans: The Original Japanese Barbecue Sauce has been perfected over generations and is a craveable sauce full of umami. Widely available online, it has a blend of ginger, garlic, rice vinegar, mirin, and toasted sesame oil. I want to drown a pulled-pork bao bun with this sauce.
    • Kraft Sweet Teriyaki Barbecue Sauce:With notes of ginger and sesame, this one would be great on a seared hot dog.
    • CJ Korean BBQ Original Sauce, Kalbi:This is a fantastic marinade sauce for any meat. The sweet, tangy, umami flavor transports you to authentic Korean barbecue. This sauce with charred ribs and topped with sesame seeds will turn your barbecue table spread into an unforgettable meal.

Heinz Classic Original Barbecue Sauce certainly delivers on its sweet and thick promise. A nice hefty paste coated the chicken and I was really excited to try a bite of this sauce. Big Bob Gibson White Sauce

    The Best Bottled BBQ Sauce

My other favorite barbecue sauce more unique to Alabama is Big Bob Gibson white sauce, a mayonnaise-based concoction that’s particularly great on grilled or roasted chicken. It has this wonderful creamy-tangy-sweet-garlic thing going on, and it’s also very versatile. You can thin it out to use as a salad dressing with excellent results.

    How To Enhance Barbecue Sauce

Barbecue sauce off the supermarket shelf can be pretty good, others can be pretty meh. So, what happens if you find yourself in possession of a sauce that doesnt tickle your tastebuds? You can enhance it with the things you happen to have on hand.

Adding honey or maple syrup to your sauce will add an even sweeter note to the finished dish while providing your cooking food with a glassy, candied appearance very delicious. Brown sugar and molasses are more delicious ways to sweeten up a sauce, but they wont create the same glassy look as honey.

Adding fruit juices like apple, pineapple, mango, or any citrus can lighten and add freshness to a sauce and will cut any greasiness with bright acidity. Brown sugar can also help when you find a sauce that is too tangy or vinegary. Beer, wine, or booze like tequila or whisky can also add huge flavor to your bottled sauce. The added benefit of thinning your sauce out with a little juice is that it can protect the sauce from burning and make it easier to work in some cases. Keep in mind, though, that thin sauce will drip and run which can be messier on your cooking grids.

Create depth by adding dark chocolate and coffee to your barbecue sauce. These two, feature a bitter-sweet combo that can truly enhance the blend of spices and flavors present in your bottled barbecue sauce.

Capital City Mambo Sauce Variety 2 Pack

    Why youll love it:

Mambo sauce has an interesting history, but thats mostly irrelevant. What IS relevant: its really tasty. The recipe is also fairly simple overall, and produces a thin, runny sauce with a tasty vinegar and tomato base, citrus undertones, and a few other flavors that combine into a delicious salty, sweet, and sometimes lightly spicy sauce that is like nothing else around.

While this pushes the bounds of the definition of barbeque sauce a little bit, being closer to a condiment in a lot of ways, its used in enough barbeque dishes that I can give it a pass. It makes an excellent pulled pork and brisket sauce especially, but is at home on just about anything .

If youve never tried it, this sauce is well worth picking up and taking a look at.

    • Unique sweet and salty flavor profile.
    • Excellent for use as both a sauce and a condiment.
    • Good on everything, from foods like French fries to any kind of barbeque to traditional Korean dishes.
    • Two packs give you a lot of value for the money.
    • Easy to use squirt bottles.

    What we didnt like

    • Very thin, so is of limited use as a basting sauce.

How Do You Make Homemade Bbq Sauce

This barbecue sauce starts with ketchup as the base. Look for ketchup that is organic or conventional ketchup that is not sweetened with high fructose corn syrup. The ketchup is combined with apple cider vinegar, an array of spices, a dash of hot sauce and brown sugar to make up this intensely flavored condiment. All you have to do is throw everything in the pan, let it simmer for a bit, and youre done!

    How To Use Barbecue Sauce

which WHISK(E)Y makes the best BBQ SAUCE???

Of course, you can use your chosen sauce directly from the bottle. However, any thick sauce, especially Kansas City Style, or similar, which contains large amounts of sugars, should be saved to be brushed on until the last 10 to 15 minutes of cooking. This is done to ensure that the sauce doesnt burn or make a mess on the cooking grids. Instead, this gives you and your food the chance to create a caramelized glaze that is the perfect balance of sticky and smoky. Sear marks will be darker and slightly burnt, but this is a good thing. That char will offset the sauce perfectly, for the ideal barbecue flavor that you crave.

Pro Tip:Use a silicone basting brush, like Napoleons dishwasher-safe Silicone Basting Brush, to slather sauces onto your barbecued creations. It can be fully sanitized after every use and wont shed bristles. Using a basting brush provides control as to where you put the sauce while cooking, saving on messy grids. Silicone basting brushes are also great for basting your holiday meals with juice or butter, as well as painting a protective coating of oil onto your cooking grids when seasoning them. Alabama white barbecue sauce can be used as a baste for chicken while cooking the mayo will lead to a crispy finish but is mainly used as a condiment or dip once food has been served.

South Carolina Gold BBQ sauce is another used as a condiment or dip once the food has arrived at the table. Try it on some grilled pork chops.

Unheard of in the UK until a few years ago, Sweet Baby Ray’s is now an incredibly popular choice among people looking to bring a flavour of American barbecue into their British homes. Mustard seeds gave it a nice little kick of heat, and the smokiness wasnt too overpowering.
