There are different varieties of liquid smoke. Personally, I use Hickory flavored liquid smoke, but any liquid smoke available can be used to make your sauce.

My Tips For Making Barbecue Sauce

  • Measure the spices into a small bowl and whisk them together before adding it to the pan. This will ensure any hardened clumps are broken up.
  • Also, it is best to use a high side pot when boiling and simmering. This sauce really has a tendency to pop and spatter when it cooks!
  • Since barbecue sauce is really a regional and individual taste type of flavor, taste your sauce after it has simmered a bit. You can add more onion or garlic powder, sugar, vinegar or cayenne pepper to suit your particular taste, though I think this recipe has plenty of sweet taste.
  • If you like the sauce really thick, whisk in a teaspoon or two of cornstarch to the mix.
  • If Im not in a hurry, I like to let it simmer on very low for 15-20 minutes and really let the flavors meld.

Plus all living organisms whether plant-based or animal-derived contain some amount of sodium naturally. In the case of these ingredients, that means there are trace amounts that are present in the peppers and tomatoes. Though now we really are talking super insignificant amounts!

From the list, the true no sodium hot sauce brands are and Docs Salt-Free, Mr. Spice Salt-Free, Homesweet Homegrown, and then a staple in our kitchens which is Brother Bru Brus Original African Hot Pepper .

How To Make Low Sodium Spaghetti Sauce

Healthy BBQ Sauce Recipe | How To Make Low Calorie Low Carb BBQ Sauce

First start browning the beef and chop up the ground beef finely as it cooks. While that is initially cooking chop up the onion and add to the beef when its almost finished. I like to chop up my onion finely for this sauce and using this Slap Chopper from Amazon makes it quick and easy. Then while those both finish cooking you can measure out the rest of the ingredients. I personally like to let the hamburger and onion really brown up it will soften when simmering in the sauce later. Then add the garlic in for about the last minute of cooking. Both things I think add even more flavor.

Then, add the tomato sauce, tomato paste, seasonings, and sugar and bring the mixture to a light boil for a minute. Be careful of bubbling splatters! Add water, cover pot and turn heat down to a low simmer for 30 minutes or longer, to really bring out the flavor. The longer you simmer it, the more the flavors will blend together and intensify. Also the longer it simmers the thicker it will be. If it gets to thick just add a little more water.
