Ive heard people raving about this sauce and its finally available at Costco in Canada so yay for that!

    First things first. Ive youve never had Raos sauces, youre truly missing out. Yes, they are more expensive than regular big brand sauces, but the difference in taste and quality is absolutely incredible.

    To make your own Rao Marinara sauce you will need:

    • Four 28-ounce cans of whole tomatoes with basil, preferably from San Marzano
    • 1/2 cup of olive oil
    • 6 tablespoons chopped onion
    • 4 garlic cloves, peeled and minced
    • Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper
    • 12 fresh basil leaves, torn
    • Pinch of dried oregano

    Steps to follow:

  • Remove tomatoes from the can and place in a large bowl, reserving juices. Crush the tomatoes with your hands remove and discard the hardcore from the end of the stem, and any resistant layers and membranes set aside.
  • Place the oil in a large, non-reactive saucepan over medium-low heat. Add onion and cook until soft and just starting to brown about 3 minutes. Add garlic and cook until soft, about 30 seconds. Add tomatoes and reserved juices season with salt. Increase the heat and bring to a boil. Immediately reduce heat to low and simmer until slightly thickened, about 1 hour.
  • Add the basil, if using, the oregano, and season with pepper continue cooking 1 minute more. Remove from the fire and serve.

    Raos meatballs are the best meatballs I have ever tasted. They are simple but somehow magical at the same time. Its totally worth the effort to make these at home.

    The version floating around the internet is close I think except for two little details. The internet version has you make the meatballs 1 1/2 inches in diameter. And you only simmer the meatballs in the marinara for 15 minutes. In the restaurant, Raos meatballs are bigger. Way bigger.
