Is Tzatziki Sauce Healthier Than Hummus
In addition to tzatziki sauce, hummus is another dip youve probably seen a lot in the Mediterranean foods aisle or read about in cookbooks or have eaten often with chicken, beef, pork, and just about everything that you can eat this tzatziki with.
But which one is more nutritious? Well, tzatziki has protein from the Greek yogurt, but so does hummus from its chickpea base.
Hummus also contains tahini, olive oil, and lemon juice, all of which have health benefits like fiber, heart-healthy fat, and a lower risk of stroke and heart disease.
On the other hand, tzatziki contains less calories, and fat. It also provides heart-healthy benefits from the garlic.
Basically, they are both very healthy options! If youre going for purely less calories, then tzatziki would be the best pick. But otherwise, they are just about equally healthy for you, and, even healthier when you make them for yourself rather than going for the store-bought brand.

Can You Freeze Tzatziki Sauce
Yes, you definitely can freeze home-made best tzatziki sauce recipe by following a few simple steps.
I wont promise you with outstanding & extremely fresh results but, it will survive the freezer test for 2 months when you do the following:
- Place the left over tzatziki in a freezer safe plastic air tight container.
- Wrap it all up with cling film & put it in a freeze safe bag. If possible suck out all the air. This method will keep the yogurt very fresh.
- Label the package & store it in your freezer.
Sometimes, when you thaw frozen tzatziki the cucumbers in the sauce might loose some of the crunch factor & the sauce might have some amount of the liquid floating on the top.
After thawing stir the sauce gently to mix in that extra water or you may even drain it.
We love drizzling it with a few drops of extra virgin olive oil & garnish it with few more fresh chopped dill. It brings back so much life to the freezer sauce.

Like other sauces weve enjoyed before, this too can be stored. Because this Tzatziki sauce recipe is made with fresh ingredients, it is best served as soon as you make it. But if you made your sauce ahead of time you may want to place it in an airtight container and refrigerate.
The mixture will last for about 3 4 days. You might see a bit of liquid separating from the Tzatziki every time you plan to use it but dont worry, its just the lemon juice and whey separated from the whole mixture. Easily mix the sauce again and youll restore it good as new.

What To Serve It With:
The recipe people generally think of when they see tzatziki is falafel or a gyro. I mean, when you dine at a Greek or Mediterranean restaurant, you’re pretty much guaranteed to enjoy this sauce.
But Tzatziki sauce is incredibly versatile. The consistency is more similar to a dip, in my opinion. I’ve used tzatziki sauce with:
- All kinds of meat including beef, lamb, pork, chicken and seafood. It is seriously fantastic when served with any of these.
- Chips, vegetable sticks, and warm pita bread. It makes a great dip that is much healthier than so many other options out there.
- Baked potato topping. Skip the sour cream and replace it with tzatiki for extra protein.
- On top of burgers and sandwiches. This is where that garlic punch really stands out.

A Few Important Tips For Best Results
1- To make tzatziki, start by grating the cucumber in your food processor with a pinch of kosher salt. I like to use English seedless cucumbers that have been at least partially peeled. Make sure that you drain the cucumbers very well over a mesh sieve. You can do this step ahead of time, or if you’re in a rush, it’s helpful to place the grated cucumber in a clean kitchen cloth or a heavy napkin and squeeze all the liquid out.
2- I like to mix my actual tztaziki sauce by hand in a large bowl. First, combine the garlic with white vinegar, extra virgin olive oil, and a pinch more salt. Add the drained cucumber. Finally, stir in the strained yogurt Make sure to stir until everything is well combined.
3- For best taste and texture, cover tztaziki sauce tightly and refrigerate for a couple of hours before use.
4- If you’re not sure you can handle this much garlic, start with half the amount of garlic the first time you try it.
5- To change things up, feel free to stir in a little bit of fresh dill or mint

Mix in the sour cream, vinegar, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, dill, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and pepper. You can serve it immediately, but I prefer to allow the tzatziki to sit in the refrigerator for a few hours for the flavors to blend. Serve chilled or at room temperature.
What Can I Use Instead Of Tzatziki
However here are a few possible substitutions:
- Greek yogurt/sour cream. I have made this recipe with all these ingredients from fat free to full fat, and it always turns out amazing.

Fresh Dill Or Dried Dill Weed
We love dill in our home, so this tzatziki sauce recipe uses plenty of fresh dill. But, unfortunately, there are times that my grocery store is out of fresh dill. In this case, I will turn to dried dill weed, which I keep in our pantry. If you use dried dill weed , youll want to use half of the amount I have listed in the recipe at the end of this post. Of course, you can always add more, but I would only add half and determine after tasting if you would like to add more.

Low-Carb Diet / Low-Glycemic Diet / South Beach Diet Suggestions:This recipe would be suitable for any phase of the South Beach Diet and most other low-carb eating plans. Yogurt is a dairy product where the South Beach Diet recommends always choosing non-fat or low-fat, but Tzatziki is a condiment, and you wont be eating enormous amounts of it so I would probably use full-fat yogurt for best flavor.
