Is Hot Sauce Safe During Pregnancy

Hot Sauce Recipe and Salt Discussion

As with many foods, hot sauce has not specifically been studied in pregnant women sufficiently. While there is no reason to suspect its dangerous to the developing baby, no one can say for sure.

As far as science knows today, when mothers consume above-average amounts of hot and spicy foods while they are pregnant, there is no increased risk of birth defects, autism, or other unusual physical/mental developments.

This unknown status may be alarming but it is common, as most foods and dietary supplements fall under this same pregnancy classification.

Weve previously discussed how condiments can single-handedly sabotage a meals nutritional value. Is hot sauce one such condiment?

After my heart transplant, and going on anti-rejection medications, I found that my taste-buds had changed a bit, and that I needed more of a flavor to really taste it in a dish. I needed more heat, more sour, or more garlic. After a few months, when my body adjusted and my taste-buds came back a bit towards normal. I found I still liked the higher amounts of heat. It is a flavor component that I added to many dishes. I poured it on eggs, rice, soups, and so on.

What To Look For In A Store

When buying a pasta sauce Ive got a few must-haves, otherwise the sauce just doesnt make it into the shopping cart. The points I list below are pretty important and will assure you that what you are buying is healthy and tastes good.

Aim for sauces with the following

Limited ingredients: In my opinion, youve got to be able to pronounce the ingredients you see on the label. No unpronounceable stuff, and no sketchy ingredients like fillers and coloring. The fewer ingredients, the better. And keep it simple! Tomatoes and a few spices will do.

No added sugar: Youd be surprised at some of the hidden sugars in tomato sauces on the grocery store shelf. Some of the ingredients you may not even recognize as sugar, like cane juice crystals, rice syrup, and maltodextrin.

Clean ingredients: If there are added ingredients, theyve got to be clean and healthy. Sometimes a good pasta sauce will have a little olive oil added for example, and thats okay. Its when you get inflammatory oils or oils that are hydrogenated added to the sauce that youve got to take a second look. Learn more about oils here, to be informed.

Other nutritional factors: Watch the sodium content. The recommended intake of sodium per day in adults is 2300mg. But some jarred pasta sauces can have as much as 500mg per ½ cup serving! Keep an eye on the fat content in the sauce you buy.

Healthy Reasons To Love Tabasco Sauce

    Hot Sauce Louisiana Nutrition Facts

    Hey there, hot stuff!

On Wednesday, the folks at Tabasco offered HealthySelf a virtual tour of their Avery Island, La., headquarters, where they have been brewing and bottling their iconic hot sauce since the 1860s.

Throughout the hour-long tour, we were impressed by the healthy perks hidden in that slim red bottle. Here are 5 good-for-you reasons to hit the sauce:

  • It’s pure. Tabasco has zero calories, zero salt and zero artificial sketchiness. That beautiful color isn’t dye — it’s the true color of the peppers, which the Avery Island hot sauce engineers match against a wooden dowel to make sure they’re the perfect shade of ripe red. The only ingredients: Aged pepper mash, distilled vinegar and a touch of Avery Island salt.

  • It’s not packed with salt. One bottle of Tabasco is less than 2 percent salt. Not all hot sauces are this low in sodium, so read your labels!

  • It helps stoke your metabolism. Some studies have shown that capsaicin, the compound that gives chili peppers their spicy kick, creates enough heat to raise your body temperature, which helps you burn more calories — approximately an 8 percent bump — immediately following a meal.

  • It keeps you satisfied. In one study, subjects who had hot sauce with an appetizer consumed about 200 fewer calories when the main course came around, compared to subjects who didn’t have any capsaicin.
