Sweet and Tangy Keto BBQ Sauce – Low Carb – No Added Sugar

When dieting, it is best to limit carbohydrates to 20g per day, and ideally, you should aim to keep this amount below 30 grams. However, if you are looking to lose weight, it is better to eat less carbs every day. When you do eat carbs, you should consume them as protein, with fat filling up the remainder. Depending on the type of food you ate, you may have to cut back on the amount of total carbs you consume, but the results will be worth it.

To maximize the benefits of the keto diet, you should eat more fat-rich foods. These are generally higher in saturated fat than those found in other food groups, and therefore contain more sugar than is recommended. High-fat food sources are often associated with contaminants and hormones, so it is advisable to buy products from organic sources. You should also try to eat as much produce as possible that is local and organic. The Environmental Working Group provides a list of the least-contaminated foods and the ones that should be avoided.

While many people might think that avoiding processed meats is difficult, this isnt true. Some are high in carbohydrates but low in vitamins and minerals. You should also avoid breads made from flour, which are often highly processed. Moreover, try to eat more seafood and shellfish instead, as they contain significant amounts of carbohydrates. To keep your body healthy, it is important to maintain a proper mindset, which is essential to follow the ketogenic diet.

What Sugar Substitute Is Best

I have experimented with different low carb sugar substitutes, and can now say that Sukrin brown sugar is my favorite, especially for this BBQ sauce. The brown sugar substitute is soft and pack-able, and has that molasses flavor we all love. It does not have that strange erythritol flavor or make you mouth cool and numb. The brown sugar substitute measure 1:1, which makes it an easy replacement for sugar.

Last week I made the keto ketchup with monk fruit sweetener, which I really like too, but its lacking that depth of flavor that the brown sugar has.

How To Make Sugar

Once you gather all of the ingredients, sugar-free bbq sauce is a one-pot recipe that requires about 10 minutes of cook time.

To make Keto BBQ sauce:

  • Gather all the ingredients and put them into a small pot
  • Whisk the ingredients together until they are smooth
  • Heat the BBQ sauce on medium-low for 8 to 10 minutes
  • The BBQ sauce will thicken as it cooks and again once it cools.

    Recipe Ideas Using This Sauce

Use this barbecue sauce as you would the traditional kind. Here are just a couple of ideas to get you started:

Which Type Of Sweetener Should I Use

KETO Q BBQ Sauce â Nerdy Brothers

You need brown granular sweetener when making sugar-free bbq sauce. It melts easily and helps bring out a smokey/charred flavor in the BBQ sauce.

You can typically order this online if you are not able to find it in stores. However, feel free to use whatever sweetener you prefer. You can learn more about different sweeteners by reading through my Ultimate Guide To Low-Carb Sweeteners.

TOP TIP: As with ALL recipes here, ALWAYS taste your batter BEFORE cooking to ensure you have added enough sweetener to suit YOUR tastebuds. Read the Ultimate Guide To Low-Carb Sweeteners.

    Keto Bbq Sauce Ingredients

The ingredients for this sugar free bbq sauce are all keto-friendly. You are more than likely to have all of them at home right now. Here is just a little about some of the key ingredients, what I use, brand and why.

I use Grove Avocado Oil for flavour. Any extra virgin olive oil can be used if preferred.

There is a link to my sugar free ketchup that is used in the recipe however, any sugar free or reduced sugar shop-bought ketchup/tomato sauce can be used.

The yellow mustardis the American-type you use on a hotdog not powdered mustard.

I use 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar in this recipe it does add a good amount of tanginess to the sauce and helps to cut the sweetness and fat when used on ribs etc. You can reduce the amount if preferred, but this sauce is perfectly balanced to me.

Sugar-free Worcerstershire is available in specialty stores. Honestly, it is there for more of a traditional flavour in barbecue sauce. I have used gluten-free tamari many times and love the sauce as is, so choose what you would prefer. To be honest though, if you use the tamari, coconut aminos or even gluten free soy sauce with the ingredients in this keto bbq sauce you will not notice any difference.

I use Sukrin Gold granular sweetener in this recipe. To me it is important to use a gold/brown sweetener to get a more caramel brown barbecue sauce flavour. Other brands that would suit are Natvia or SoNourished.

How Long Does Homemade Bbq Sauce Last

This sauce will stay good in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks. You can also freeze the sauce! To do so, freeze the sauce in an airtight container. If using mason jars, just be sure to leave an inch of space at the top of the jar to allow for expansion.

To defrost frozen bbq sauce, place the frozen sauce in the refrigerator for 24 hours. You can use the sauce cold from the refrigerator or reheat it in a saucepan on the stove, depending on how you’re going to use it in a recipe.

Can I Eat Bbq On Keto

According to the tenets of a ketogenic or keto diet, increasing fat intake while excluding carbohydrates causes the body to go into ketosis, a state of burning more fat than sugar. With keto, it eliminates those sugar cravings, said Mary Alexander, a keto enthusiast from Rockwall. Barbecue is totally keto.

Can you eat dry rub ribs on Keto? You can most certainly eat ribs made with the dry rub in this recipe because it is keto friendly. If you were looking to get dry rub ribs at a restaurant, you would need to ask if there was any sugar in the dry rub they have used to make their ribs.

Keto BBQ Sauce – No Ketchup/ No Sweetener

You can certainly use fresh garlic and onion in this recipe, but we don’t like to for a few reasons. Number one, it will definitely increase the carb count in the bbq sauce to use fresh onion and garlic.

Secondly, when we are making a quick sugar free barbecue sauce, we like to stick with dry spices and seasonings so that it can mix easier into the sauce without creating any chunks. You could also work through this by blending your sauce when everything is all cooked, and then straining it to get out any lumps. We don’t like to take this extra step most of the time, personally.

I so love to have homemade, healthy mixes and condiments in my kitchen.

Low Carb No Sugar Homemade BBQ Sauce is easy and guess what! It tastes just like BBQ sauce!

I have tried quite a few BBQ sauce recipes and have often been disappointed. That is, until I tried this one.

I was encouraged when it smelled so much like the real thing as it cooked but I didnt want to be too hopeful. It turns out that the hope was well founded.

THIS is the recipe I have been looking for!

I found it here and made a few changes.

Instead of using whole garlic and onion, I use powder. It is lower carb and easier, not to mention we wouldnt want the chunks in our sauce.

So many recipes say No Sugar but what they really mean is no white sugar and they add honey, maple syrup, or artificial sugar.

Even the healthy versions have sugar of some kind added and that is not low carb.

This recipe REALLY has NO SUGAR . You wont get away from that in a bbq sauce made with tomatoes, unfortunately.

The tomatoes will add about 1 gram of sugars to each Tablespoon of bbq sauce.

Dont ask me how, but the added sugar is not needed in this recipe. You can thank me lateror now, that is fine.

And the best part about that is that it is still wonderful BBQ sauce!

    Cooking And Serving Tips

    Sugarless BBQ Sauce

Here are a few other things to know about making your own BBQ sauce like a pro:

    • Make sure to stir frequently, about once every 10 to 15 minutes, while the BBQ sauce is cooking. This will help better incorporate the flavors and ensure that the sauce is evenly cooked throughout.
    • Let the sauce cool before transferring to a storage container. A mason jar is a good option. Whatever you use, make sure it’s airtight. You can store your sauce in the refrigerator for up to a week.

In my keto bbq sauce recipe, there are just 12 calories per serving and ZERO grams of sugar.

Ingredients For Easy Keto Bbq Sauce

Nothing super obscure on this ingredient list heres everything youll need:

    • Tomato Paste to start, youll need 1 can of tomato paste. This will be the base of our BBQ sauce.
    • Monk Fruit Sweetener the star of the keto show: a cup of monk fruit sweetener. Monk fruit sweetener has virtually no aftertaste, and is a really great, natural zero-sugar option.
    • Apple Cider Vinegar a ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar gives a punch of acidity to help counter the sweetness of the BBQ sauce.
    • Tamari a ¼ cup of tamari or soy sauce adds a saltiness, depth, and umami to the sauce that cant be replaced!
    • Ancho Chili Powder 1 tablespoon of ancho chili powder adds a deep smokiness to the sauce .
    • Sea Salt + Ground Black Pepper a ¼ teaspoon of salt and a ½ teaspoon of ground black pepper really round everything out!

This fabulous mustard bbq sauce is so easy to make, theres simply no excuse not to. Here are my best tips for getting it right:

  • Yellow mustard: This is the base of the sauce, and you want just regular yellow mustard. Skip the Dijon or spicy brown mustard this time as they will change the unique flavor.
  • Brown sugar replacement: I like Swerve Brown for this, as its the closest in taste and texture to real brown sugar. You can use regular granulated Swerve or any granulated sweetener instead. You can add a teaspoon of molasses to get that brown sugar flavor .
  • Honey replacement: Replacing the honey is a bit more tricky. I used an allulose-based honey flavored syrup and it worked perfectly. However, I realize thats not available to everyone. My best suggestion is to use regular allulose or BochaSweet in order to keep the sauce from re-crystallizing as it cools.
  • Whisk the ingredients together. Just add in the vinegar, spices, and other ingredients and whisk to combine.
  • Bring to a simmer: I consulted quite a few different recipes, some of which were cooked and some of which were not. I found that by simmering it for 5 minutes or so, I got a thicker sauce and the sweeteners dissolved more easily.
  • Store in the fridge. This is a great make-ahead recipe. Nothing in it spoils easily so you can make a big batch and store in the fridge for several weeks. Because its a bit acidic, I recommend storing it in glass jars.
  • How simple is that?

    • The longer you simmer the sauce, the thicker it will be. If youd prefer a thinner sauce, add extra water to it.
    • Taste the barbecue sauce before you remove it from the heat. If it is too tangy, add a little extra sweetener. If it isnt salty enough, add a dash more salt.
    • For a spicy kick, add some cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes. Alternatively, you can even stir through some hot sauce or buffalo sauce after it has thickened up.

    • Add your favorite spices: If you like things a little spicy, feel free to add in some chili powder or cayenne pepper to taste. Or, if you prefer a sweeter sauce, add a tablespoon or two more of your favorite sugar substitute.
    • Substitute the chipotle powder for smoked paprika for a milder less spicy option.
    • Add 1/4 teaspoon of cumin powder for an extra smokey flavor.
    • Like a tangier sauce? Add a couple more tablespoons of apple cider vinegar or red wine vinegar. This will also give you a thinner sauce for those who dont want a thicker sauce.

    Bbq Sauce Without Added Sugars

    Easy Homemade Sugar

QUESTION: How can I get that big sweet and spicy barbecue sauce taste without any sugar?

ANSWER: Use a natural low carb sweetener like erythritol, xylitol, stevia, monk fruit or a combination of any of the above. Many commercial barbecue sauces use liquid Sucralose to sweeten their products. If thats okay with you, look for EZ-Sweetz liquid drops, but avoid aspartame which changes chemical composition when it heats up and loses sweetness.

I use a low carb erythritol/stevia based sweetener. Erythritol has zero calories. The body doesnt process it so it leaves the body in the same chemical composition as it arrived. This means it contributes zero carbs to your dietary intake.
