I have a confession. Im addicted to barbecue meats and the sauce must come correct or dont come at all. I have tried a lot of sauces in the past and these days, I am searching for ones without added sugar to lower my daily sugar intake. I came up with seven tasty selections.

So, lets kick off summer with my reviews and rankings of sugar-free BBQ sauces. I am featuring seven store-bought products that are available at major grocery chains or on Amazon and range in price from about $5 to $12.

Focusing mainly on original flavors to keep it simple, I ate a dollop of each from a spoon and evaluated each based on the smell, thickness and taste. I fancied all the condiments individually however, next to their competitors, however, some fell short with my assistant agreeing for the most part.

    Smoked Stuffed Bbq Poultry & Vegetables

    Ingredients

    • 4 medium red potatoes, chopped

    • 1 cup Lillies Mustard Barbecue sauce

    Directions

    Rinse inside and outside of poultry. Season inside with salt and pepper. Season outside with Lillies seasoning mix. Place garlic and all vegetables, except potatoes, into a bowl and drizzle with olive oil. Sprinkle vegetables with salt and pepper mix together. Stuff cavity of poultry with half of vegetable mixture. Place in a shallow baking dish. Mix potatoes with remaining vegetables. Place onto pieces of foil fold sides over and seal tightly, forming small cooking pockets. Poke a few holes top of pocket. Mound coals on one side of grill. Place poultry on side of grill without coals grill. Baste outside with barbecue sauce last 30 minutes of cooking. Grill for 3 hours until internal temperature of poultry reaches 175°F. After 2 hours, place foil pouch with potato-vegetable mixture on grill. Remove from grill with poultry.

    • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

    Directions

    Par boil sprouts for 5-7 minutes or fork tender. Rinse under cold water. Cut in half and layout on a paper towel to dry out.

    Roughly cube bacon and cook in a large skillet over medium-high heat until crispy. Remove and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.

    Serve immediately.

    The coast likes a thin vinegar sauce, a tomato-based sauce is mopped on in the north, and a thick ketchup mixture adorns smoked meat in the west, but a large majority smack dab in the center of state enjoy a sauce that’s uniquely their own: the mustard sauce.

    Only a recent convert to loving all-things-mustard, I had a hard time fathoming why anyone would choose to dress their cue in something so mustardy, but lately I’ve been siding with this concoction, which is born from a collision of German ancestry and American barbecue.

    This simple sauce starts with a mustard base, mixes some sweetness in with sugar, the vinegar gives it a barbecue tang, and just enough spices create a uniqueness between one sauce and another.

    Unlike my unbridled enthusiasm for North Carolina Vinegar Sauce , I’ve approached the mustard sauce more cautiously.

    To make Carolina-style barbeque sauce, combine apple cider vinegar, ketchup, brown sugar, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, red pepper flakes, salt and pepper in a small sauce pan. Bring the sauce mixture to rapid simmer over medium heat. Immediately reduce the heat to maintain a gentle simmer.
