What Is Chipotle Pepper In Adobo Sauce

As I said, Chipotle peppers in adobo are the key to this homemade sauce.

Chipotle chilies are ripe red jalapeno peppers that have been dried and smoked. They have a medium heat and a beautiful fruity smoky flavor.

And the adobo sauce is a savory concoction made with onion, tomato, vinegar, and spices.

When combined they make a flavorful sauce. Its a smooth sauce thats a little sweet and tangy. This sauce is easily available in any grocery store.

But if you leave in small cities or if its not available, here are some of the substitutions you can try.

  • Tabasco Chipotle hot sauce
  • Tomato paste, Smoked paprika, and Cayenne pepper
  • Or you can make your own with tomato ketchup, vinegar, chipotle powder, cumin, oregano, garlic powder, and salt.

On top of chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, we also used mayonnaise, sour cream, sweetener, vinegar, and some spices.

Tips Tricks And Modifications

The only true non negotiable ingredient is the chipotle peppers in adobo sauce. I mean its a no brainer that if you substituted this ingredient for anything else it wouldnt be a Southwest Chipotle Sauce anymore! But here are a few other modifications if needed.

  • Use vegan mayo: I actually used a vegan mayo the first time I made this because it was all I had on hand. It tasted exactly the same as the non vegan version.
  • Use dairy free yogurt or sour cream: Im personally not sure how this would taste if substituted for the vegan alternative. However, I imagine it would taste pretty similar as long as you dont opt for something with a strong coconut flavour.
  • Substitute dried parsley for basil: Using basil will alter the end flavour slightly. But it wont make too much of a difference. If you dont have basil either, just skip it all together.
  • Whatever you do, dont use fresh parsley! It will change the flavour, texture and consistency of the sauce. Also, it wont be as shelf stable as if you used dried parsley. Its better to just skip the parsley all together than use fresh.
  • Use a good blender for the best consistency. I recommend theNutri Ninja Bullet.

While I havent had this exact recipe I can vouch for this being a 1000x better than Subway chipotle. Its basically a variation on a pub sauce that Ive made using canned chipotles. Im sure the chipotle powder is just as good.

As of a result, after inspecting the sauce that I ordered to go one day, I realized it had specks of dried herbs in it like a bottle of ranch dressing. That gave me the clue that it had to be ranch with chipotle peppers and sure enough, it took off from there. I tried and tried, added sour cream, more mayo tossed, and started again until it tasted just like the Southwest Chipotle sauce that I had right beside me to compare!

    Is Chipotle Southwest Sauce Spicy

The southwest chipotle sauce at Subway is indeed a spicy sauce. It contains chipotle peppers, which are as spicy as most peppers are.

This is what gives the sauce most of its deliciously smokey flavor with that added kick of heat at the end. Though the southwest chipotle sauce is not overly spicy.

Most Subway fans say that the sauce is spicy but not overly spicy like some sauces. It will burn a little and add heat to your sandwich, but it is not too spicy or enough to make your mouth burn.

It is a medium spicy sauce that most people can enjoy even if they are not a fan of extreme heat. It is just spicy enough for the spice lovers but mild enough that most people can enjoy its unique flavor.
