How To Serve Mapo Tofu

I love cooking mapo tofu for a quick lunch or dinner and serving it over steamed rice. Sometimes I double the meat and sauce, so it will be enough to serve two people as a one-dish meal. I also like to add a handful of greens at the end of braising before adding the cornstarch, to create a more nutritious and balanced meal. Sometimes I also replace the ground pork with ground turkey to cut calories.

For special diets, you can make it less spicy and skip the rice so it will be paleo-friendly. You can also make it into a vegan dish by replacing the meat with mushrooms.

Yes, mapo tofu is such a versatile dish!

Seed Ranch Flavor Co Thai Green Hot Sauce

Here’s a great companion for a stir fry or rice bowl. This handmade hot sauce includes lemongrass, Thai ginger, cilantro, basil, Serrano peppers, and lime juice. Take the extra advice from Amazon reviewer Lodro: “After I tasted it I ordered a box and handed it out to friends as gifts for a month I can’t recommend it more highly.”

What Is Peanut Sauce

Peanut sauce is very popular in South East Asia and commonly used as dipping sauce for many dishes, such as skewered meat , spring rolls, gago-gado , and the list goes on! There’s so many different ways to make your own depending on your preference.

Our peanut sauce is made of garlic, chili sauce, sugar, peanut butter, soy sauce, sweet soy sauce, and sesame oil. The peanut butter we used is the Kraft Smooth Peanut Butter since we like a more uniform texture for the sauce. But you can also use the chunky peanut butter if you like peanut bits in your sauce.

Alvin’s Heat Up The Hot Sauce World

  • May 18, 2020

Hot sauce is a mainstay of Caribbean culture and cuisine, and there are dozens, if not hundreds, to choose from throughout the islands. For an authentic taste of the U.S. Virgin Islands, its hard to beat Alvins Hot Sauce, winner of 12 international awards and featured on Netflix.

Originally from Trinidad, Alvin Franklin moved to St. Croix at the age of 14. After graduating from Central High School, Franklin joined the U.S. military, where he did two tours in Iraq and Haiti over 28 years as a water treatment specialist. After leaving the military, he worked at the HOVENSA refinery for Nalco Water Company for 12 years. When the refinery closed, he had a choice to either move to Houston and continue doing the work he was doing or start his own business.

During his youth, Franklin grew up developing my own brand by watching his stepfather make his special sauce. Over the years, Franklin refined his recipes and after winning an award for his spicy blend, he decided to get his business license and get serious about the sauce.

Because he could not get enough scotch bonnet peppers on St. Croix, he set up production in Trinidad and has the product shipped to the Virgin Islands. Alvins Hot Sauce can be found in major restaurants and supermarkets on St. Croix, St. John, St. Thomas, Tortola and now on .

Its going to be in the U.S. in a big way. Everyone should taste this, Franklin said.

Just like any new business owner, there was a learning curve.

The Inspiration Behind The Spicy Peanut Sauce Noodles

We first tasted peanut butter noodles back when we were living in Shanghai. We instantly fell in love and have always been craving it ever since we moved back to Canada. It’s sweet, salty, spicy, savoury, and rich in texture. And since these noodles are served cold, it’s also so so refreshing. It’s so good, of course we couldn’t resist making our own recipe for it! Plus, it’s so easy to make and can easily be adaptable with any pantry-stable ingredients.

Spicy Peanut Sauce Noodles

Spicy peanut sauce noodles is easily one of our go-to recipes. It’s easy, quick and packed with flavors. It can be eaten as a main dish, but can also be accompanied by other dishes, such as grilled skewered meat. In 25 minutes, you can get a delicious plate of nutty, creamy, chewy noodles.

Best Chili Sauce To Use

Two important ingredients that you might not find as easily in stores are the chili sauce and sweet soy sauce. We used the Indonesian ABC Original Chili Sauce and ABC Kecap Manis. We like the ABC chili sauce since it’s on the sweeter side and not too spicy. The ABC kecap manis is thick in consistency and adds sweetness and great darker color to the sauce. If you cannot find it in your local stores, you can order online or use another chili sauce of your liking and use regular sugar instead of the sweet sauce. Keep in mind each brand of chili sauce is different, and regular sugar doesn’t have the same sweetness level as sweet soy sauce, so the quantities would have to be adjusted accordingly. We also added extra chili oil from our favourite Lao Gan Ma Black Bean Chili Sauce for some extra spiciness!

Tips On Cooking With Sichuan Peppercorns

Sichuan peppercorn is a crucial ingredient and it really enhances the flavor of the dish.

Again, I highly recommend using a high quality fresh brand such as the ones from The Mala Market.

The most common approach is to fry the Sichuan peppercorns in the hot oil to infuse the flavor, then you remove the peppercorns so you wont accidentally chew on it and feel numb for 10 minutes. Once fried, Sichuan peppercorns will become much milder. You can grind it up and use it to garnish your dish later, to add more flavor if you prefer.

Alternatively, you can use ground up fresh Sichuan peppercorn. I recently got the Sichuan peppercorn grinder from The Mala Market and really enjoyed it. Instead of using whole peppercorn, you can grind a small amount and add it during the cooking or at the end to add flavor. If you have this product on hand, you can add 1/4 teaspoon ground Sichuan peppercorn at the time you add the ground pork. This is such a fast and easy way to use Sichuan peppercorn.

When you use super fresh Sichuan peppercorn, the flavor is super pungent and you might not need to use a lot. For example, if you just purchased a bag from The Mala market, you probably only need about half of the amount indicated in this recipe. The longer you store the Sichuan peppercorns, for example, a few months to a year, they will gradually lose fragrance and you will need to use more.

    Can You Recommend A Gluten

    Alvin Diec graphic design

Doubanjiang usually contains fermented wheat, which is not gluten-free. Unfortunately I hadnt found a great tasting gluten-free doubanjiang at the time of writing this post.

There is a Japanese brand doubanjiang thats gluten-free and I see it quite often at Asian markets and . Compared to the Chinese brand, this one is quite salty and has less fermented taste. If you decide to use this one for your mapo tofu, you should reduce the amount so your dish wont end up too spicy and salty.

First Memories Of Hot Sauce And Spicy Foods

As far back as a child growing up, I have loved spicy foods. My brothers and I would always come together to make mango chow, which is green mangoes thinly sliced, mixed with fresh hot peppers, salt, black pepper, fresh garlic etc. The love for that recipe sparked my passion for a tasty hot sauce up to this present day.

The exciting feedback throughout the years of making the hot sauce at home for my family, became a necessity in every meal. My family and I have been hooked ever since.

Growing Alvin’s Hot Pepper Sauces was a culmination of events over the years. Lessons Learned Along The Way

Tortang Giniling with Alvin Cailan | At Home With Us

Transitioning from making your own batches to producing for a company requires patience with yourself. Doing proper research including looking at competitors and the demand of your product can protect you from making major mistakes in the beginning.

In addition, making decisions on the planning and selection of your co-packing is crucial to succeeding early on in your company. I suggest always planning ahead for your next move. For example, having a social media presence is a critical strategic move to expand the audience and growth of your company. And having different strategies like sampling, entering competitions and packaging is also imperative. Lastly, surrounding yourself with people who share your passion, including the relationships when acquiring reliable sources for your ingredients is truly important.

My sauce has a complex flavor, considering you have the sensation of heat from the fresh hot peppers but also its savory when settled onto your palette. First wave of introduction to your taste buds of course is the necessary heat but theres an equal enjoyment of the delicious taste through the spices of the Caribbean. If your meal is lacking the flavor it deserves, Alvins Hot Sauce will enhance it.

What Type Of Tofu To Use For Mapo Tofu

There is no correct answer to this, and you should choose what works best for you.

Some Chinese restaurants, including many in China, prefer to use soft or silken tofu to make this dish. It creates a very silky tofu texture that melts in your mouth. This method does require some experience in handling tofu, so you wont break apart the very delicate silken tofu while cutting and cooking.

On the other hand, you can also use extra firm, firm or medium tofu for this dish. These types of tofu are much easier to handle. Plus, once you braise it in the rich spicy sauce, it absorbs a lot of flavor and tastes great.

    Secret Aardvark Habanero Hot Sauce

Billed as a Tex-Mex and Caribbean hybrid, this sauce has a base of habaneros and roasted tomatoes, but the flavor is rounded out with mustard, turmeric, “spices,” and…I don’t know…magic? Advocates of the Aardvark say it goes well with anything: burgers, eggs, pizza, etc. Suzanne on Amazon called it “Incredible! Really yummy, smokey, with a hint of citrus flavor.” Made in Portland, Oregon, it’s become nearly as ubiquitous on restaurant tables there as ketchup.
