    it doesnt really matter. It just needs a bit of liquid to get it pulled together as a batter. The juice theyre marinated in has lots of flavour. I believe the ones I used were a mix of oil and vinegar.

  • you can try! We just have never tried. The chickpea flour is a good flavour, thicker binder, and gives it that colour. BUT if you do try let us know. I suspect it would work.

  • Im not too sure. I worry that the bread crumbs would get soggy. Then they would fall apart in the fryer. You could make the mixture and refrigerate it but the dredging, battering, and frying should all be done at the same time I think

  • I just made these and they were amazing! Since going vegan the only thing Ive been missing is seafood. The texture of these was exactly the same as fish, and the taste was very close! I served them with a chili sauce as I am not a fan of horseradish.

    Why This Recipe Works

    Mayonnaise is made with eggs but there are several vegan versions available in stores now. They are usually made with oil so to make this oil free I chose a different creamy base.

    Here I used an unsweetened dairy-free yogurt as my creamy base and added flavors to make it more like mayonnaise. It is not as thick as typical tartar sauce but still full of flavor.

    The combination of herbs and pickles makes this creamy condiment the perfect dip full of flavor and the yogurt makes it a healthier option!

    If you’re not oil-free, feel free to use your favorite vegan mayo instead. This is one of my favorite vegan mayos.

    • Vegan Mayo – this is the base of the tartar sauce. You can find many vegan varieties at your local store or you can easily make your own in about 5 minutes!
    • Relish – this is simply chopped up pickles. I prefer pickle relish, but you can also use sweet relish. If you don’t have relish, you can dice pickles very small.
    • Lemon Juice – a small squeeze of fresh lemon juice is optional, yet adds a ton of flavor to the tartar sauce. You can also use bottled lemon juice if you don’t have fresh.
    • Dill – fresh dill is optional but adds a lot to homemade tartar sauce and I highly recommend it! You can use dried dill too if you don’t have fresh.
