Shelf Pesto Vs Refrigerated

Pesto Pasta Recipe | How to Make Basil Pesto Pasta | Spaghetti with Pesto | Creamy Pasta Sauce

You may have noticed that you can buy pesto from the fridge or the shelf sections of the supermarket.

Typically the refrigerated pesto will be fresher, and this will translate into a better-tasting condiment with fewer preservatives. However, this can come at a slight premium for the price you pay for fresh goods.

The shelf-bought pesto that you can usually find next to jarred pasta sauces is generally cheaper and almost as tasty. Off the shelf, glass jar pesto will last longer once opened and stored in the fridge.

You can use a homemade shelf or refrigerated shop-bought pesto the same as each other. Typically homemade recipes wont last as long as leftovers, but the cooking process is the same.

How Do You Use Pesto In A Jar

You can eat pesto straight from the jar, but Gremaud prefers to use it to heighten the flavor of pasta dishes, meats or even fresh bread. I love to use pesto as a topping for many dishes, he explains. Its very versatile. Creamy pesto pasta is the simplest way to use the condiment to make a meal.

Barilla Pesto With Basil & Rocket 190g

Ready for a little story?

Back in my college days, I didnt think I could cook.

I once accidentally put a tablespoon of salt in a batch of homemade cookies.

The recipe called for a teaspoon. Whoops.

You can imagine they didnt taste very good.

Because of this, I convinced myself that I just didnt know what I was doing and should stay far away from the kitchen.

I think there is a little life lesson in there we sometimes buy into lies about ourselves that just arent true.

At any rate I took a break from cooking for awhile.

Thankfully, I decided to give it another go in the kitchen.

Im so glad I did because cooking is truly a passion for me.

After my brief hiatus, I went back to spending a lot of time in the kitchen and started experimenting recipes.

Im proud to be partnering with Barilla.

Easy recipes like the delicious Creamy Pesto Chicken Pasta Im sharing with you today.

Its the perfect hearty recipe for any young adult to make quickly during a busy night of studying.

Creamy Pesto Pasta Recipe

This recipe is for one of my favorite pasta dishes ever: Creamy Pesto Pasta. Our daughter requests this recipe often. I think she has good taste! Its quick and easy to throw together in no time. Make your own fresh basil pesto or buy it already prepared. Once the pesto is made this Creamy Pesto Pasta Recipe is so very quick, and perfect for any night of the week.

This pasta recipe calls for a basic fresh basil pesto. And look! There just so happens to be one right here: Basic Basil Pesto Recipe. In addition to the pesto, youll need extra virgin olive oil, heavy cream and a pasta of your choice.

Once youve made the fresh pesto:

  • In a saute pan heat approximately 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat.
  • Add the pesto and mix into the oil. Be sure to stir often as the pesto warms.
  • When the pesto is warmed and just a little bubbly, slowly stream in about 1/4 c. heavy cream as you whisk lightly. If you want to add more cream, go for it. You can always add some pasta water to thin out the sauce, if needed. Here I added about 3 tablespoons.
  • Turn down the heat and continue to stir to incorporate the cream and pesto. Dont forget to salt and pepper to taste.

Add the drained pasta to the sauce tossing to cover every nook and cranny with the fresh pesto goodness. I used a 16 oz. box of butterfly/bowtie pasta which I tend to prefer for this pesto pasta dish because it grabs onto the sauce so well , but you may certainly use whatever tickles your fancy.

Basic Pesto Sauce Recipe

The classic pesto recipe that follows is adapted from one that’s offered by Rutgers University.

Ingredients:

Directions:

  • Rinse the fresh basil under cool water. Pat dry and set aside.
  • Place the pine nuts on a baking sheet in the oven and toast for a minute or so until lightly browned.
  • Put the basil, garlic, nuts and Parmesan cheese in a food processor. Add olive oil and pulse until the mixture is a well-blended paste.
  • Other recipes call for larger cheese quantities, such as 1/2 cup. You may also use Romano cheese instead of Parmesan.

Healthy recipes with pesto might involve serving the condiment over whole-grain pasta instead of pasta made with white flour. The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health suggests serving pesto over fresh chopped tomatoes.

If you’re feeling creative or just want a change of pace, try our recipes for Vegan Pesto, Kale Pesto and Pesto Hummus, which serve up delicious variations on this well-loved condiment.

Other Ways To Make And Serve Pesto Calabrese

Pesto Pasta Recipe | How to Make Basil Pesto Pasta

Pesto Calabrese is known as a red pesto. However, although I havent tried it, this can be made in a green version too. Just use green capsicums, green tomatoes and green peperoncino. You can also prepare a good quantity of this sauce and freeze it in small portions, so you have it ready for other meals.

This pesto is also fabulous as a dip or on bruschetta or even with meat or cheese. So, if you make enough you can try serving it in different ways to see which you like best. Whichever way you serve it Im sure it will become a firm favourite!

    Pasta Salad With Pesto

Zesty pesto, green peas, pine nuts, and mozzarella pearls make a flavorful and pretty pasta salad.

Though pasta salad is a staple at every summer cookout, most of them are pretty horrible. The usual formula cooked pasta, raw vegetables, and tangy salad dressing just doesnt work well. The key to making a delicious pasta salad is to replace the sharp salad dressing with a flavorful sauce, and to use cooked vegetables instead of raw.

This is my favorite pasta salad of the moment. Zesty pesto, mellowed and thickened with a little mayonnaise, makes a lovely sauce. I go all-out green by adding sweet peas to both the pesto sauce and the pasta. Toasted pine nuts add flavor and crunch. And, finally, mozzarella pearls and fresh basil jazz the whole dish up.

Go ahead and make all of the components of the salad a day ahead of time, if youd like. Just keep everything separate and toss together right before serving.

    Can You Freeze Pesto Sauce

You can absolutely freeze homemade pesto! This recipe makes a large batch of fresh pesto so it is great to plan on freezing at least half the recipe. After making the fresh basil pesto recipe pour it into an ice cube tray- in 1 ½ tablespoon portions. You can keep the cubes in the freezer for up to 6 months.

    Barilla Creamy Genovese Pesto

Barilla Creamy Genovese Pesto Sauce is made with high-quality ingredients like Italian basil and fresh grated Italian cheese, giving it a delicious creamy texture. I love traditional pesto so much, but the Creamy Genovese Pesto is such a fun twist on classic pesto sauce and it can make your pesto dishes next level.

The creamy and smooth texture of the Creamy Genovese Pesto is just so incredibly versatile. Its an amazing option for stirring into pasta and grains, but the creaminess also makes it feel like a treat you could eat with a spoon. Its now been established as a pantry staple around here, perfect for weekday nights when were running low on time, as well as dips for parties and snacks.

As delicious as their Barillas sauces are, I also love that Barilla minimizes the handling of ingredients in order to preserve the natural color of basil and the fresh aroma of Italian cheese. They rapidly prepare their recipe in as little as three hours from the start of ingredient preparation to the tightening of the lid, ensuring your pesto will be fresh and delicious.

What Is The Difference Between Red Pesto And Green One

Barilla® Rustic Basil Pesto Sauce and Spread 6 oz

As mentioned, pesto is traditionally a green sauce with lots of olive oil, basil, and pine nuts, among other ingredients. Red pesto is made using similar ingredients with the addition of sun-dried tomatoes or grilled red bell peppers.

When cooking, you can use red and green pesto interchangeably. The type you choose will depend on your taste.

Some people prefer green pesto for its unique taste compared to most tomato-based Italian sauces. However, some people choose the red one because it is packed with flavor.

My Overall Impression Of This Product

This creamy pesto is perhaps the best jarred pesto sauce that Ive ever tasted! You can use it right out of the jar to add to recipes and have dinner on the table in no time. The sauce is very flavorful and isnt as oily as some varieties of jarred pesto.

The consistency was very creamy and the taste was so good! If youre a pesto fan, youll love Barilla Creamy Genovese Pesto.

Unlike other types of pesto, pesto Calabrese is made with some cooked ingredients. The onion, red bell peppers and tomatoes need to be cooked before you blend them with the cheeses. I have seen some recipes in which they suggest blending all the ingredients raw and then cooking the sauce for 10 minutes in a small saucepan. But I prefer to do it as in this recipe.

Other Ways To Use Pesto From A Jar

You can use this herby, garlic-y puréed sauce to perk up just about anything.

    • Use it on a pizza base. Substitute tomato marinara sauce for green or red pesto and add your toppings as usual.
    • Add in salad dressings.
    • Toast topper. Add a dollop on top of your egg or mushrooms on toast for a hit of strong flavor.
    • Perk up your meat. Pesto packs a punch of flavor so you can add it to beef stew, roast beef, or chicken when the other flavors in the dish are lacking.

    Creamy Genovese Pesto Two Ways

We tried the Barilla Creamy Genovese Pesto two different ways, and both were huge hits here.

As a dip: For an easy and quick snack or appetizer, simply pair pesto with veggies, pita bread, or crackers. Its incredibly delicious, and takes almost no time since pesto doesnt even need to be heated first. My kiddos devoured the pesto with crackers, and now its one of their go-to after school snacks that they can make on their own.

Another spin on the Creamy Genovese dip would be to serve with fresh baked bread. Simply cut the top of the fresh bread into squares, leaving the bottom crust intact. Rip off chunks of bread and dip into the creamy pesto and you have the perfect appetizer or after dinner snack. If youre feeling extra, just add some cheese to the bread and everyone will be talking about it for weeks. I promise. Check out our pull-apart cheesy bread recipe for inspiration, As a pasta topping: for our second pesto meal, we went with a traditional pesto pasta. We used cooked Barilla ziti noodles and added chicken, sweet peppers, and then the Barilla Creamy Genovese Pesto. We then topped the pasta with cheese and watched it get devoured. It was so delicious, and so incredibly easy to make. Im keeping this in my back pocket for quick meals when were running from event to event.

Getting back into a routine as school starts this fall can be a challenge. There never seem to be enough hours in the day, but that doesnt mean that supper has to suffer. This creamy pesto chicken pasta is quick to make and best of all only requires one pan.

Work. School. Homework. Meetings. Chores. Bedtimes.

Some nights, it seems like I dont have time to eat supper, let alone make it!

My family loves a good, quick pasta dish and this one is sure to please. It has a secret ingredient that youre really going to love: Barilla Pronto pasta.

The old saying that a watched pot never boils is especially true when youve got somewhere to be soon, right? This pasta cooks in ten minutes with no waiting for water to boil and no draining. Barilla Pronto comes in half-cut spaghetti, rotini, and my familys favorite: Penne.

If youve ever tried a one-pot recipe with regular pasta and it turned out mushy, this is the solution. The pasta holds its shape and comes out with the texture you expect pasta to have.

I picked up both the Barilla Pronto Penne and some Barilla pesto sauce at Walmart. You can find both on the pasta aisle, but I had to visit a second Walmart to find them, so dont get discouraged. Pesto is usually on the top shelf. Heres what to look for:

    Ive already grabbed two boxes.
