Ingredients For Keto Low Carb Bbq Sauce

I must admit, this challenge was a bit daunting. Making homemade barbecue sauce can be a Big Deal. People have competitions for barbecue sauce recipes! And, different parts of the country all have different interpretations of what makes an excellent BBQ sauce.

As if that werent enough, this low carb blog is also all about recipes with ten ingredients or less. If youve ever looked at the ingredient list for a barbecue sauce, or tried to make your own using just about any recipe, you probably know this isnt the easiest promise to uphold. No matter how you like it, BBQ sauce has a ton of complex flavors!

It took a few experiments to get my low carb barbecue sauce recipe just right. Or at least good according to the family and friends I had as taste testers.

So whats in a keto BBQ sauce recipe? Not as much as youd think and thats the key.

There is no high fructose corn syrup, pointless chemicals, or crazy additives when you make this keto sauce at home. A healthy, low carb BBQ sauce can be made with only a dozen ingredients that you likely already have in your cabinets.

This low carb barbecue sauce is made with the following ingredients:

As with any recipe, you can tweak it to your tastes. Want a low carb BBQ sauce with just a bit more heat? No problem! Increase the cayenne by a pinch.

Alternasweets Sweet & Smokey Bbq Sauce

This BBQ sauce actually has two sweeteners in the form of stevia and erythritol, both of which are zero calories and carbs.

True to its name, it has a strong smokey flavor. Its 2g of carbs per tablespoon of sauce, which is fairly standard. In most instances, the carb content of these keto BBQ sauces comes from the crushed tomatoes, not any added sugars.

What Sugar Substitute Is Best

I have experimented with different low carb sugar substitutes, and can now say that Sukrin brown sugar is my favorite, especially for this BBQ sauce. The brown sugar substitute is soft and pack-able, and has that molasses flavor we all love. It does not have that strange erythritol flavor or make you mouth cool and numb. The brown sugar substitute measure 1:1, which makes it an easy replacement for sugar.

Last week I made the keto ketchup with monk fruit sweetener, which I really like too, but its lacking that depth of flavor that the brown sugar has.

How To Make Sugar Free Carolina Bbq Sauce

This fabulous mustard bbq sauce is so easy to make, theres simply no excuse not to. Here are my best tips for getting it right:

  • Yellow mustard: This is the base of the sauce, and you want just regular yellow mustard. Skip the Dijon or spicy brown mustard this time as they will change the unique flavor.
  • Brown sugar replacement: I like Swerve Brown for this, as its the closest in taste and texture to real brown sugar. You can use regular granulated Swerve or any granulated sweetener instead. You can add a teaspoon of molasses to get that brown sugar flavor .
  • Honey replacement: Replacing the honey is a bit more tricky. I used an allulose-based honey flavored syrup and it worked perfectly. However, I realize thats not available to everyone. My best suggestion is to use regular allulose or BochaSweet in order to keep the sauce from re-crystallizing as it cools.
  • Whisk the ingredients together. Just add in the vinegar, spices, and other ingredients and whisk to combine.
  • Bring to a simmer: I consulted quite a few different recipes, some of which were cooked and some of which were not. I found that by simmering it for 5 minutes or so, I got a thicker sauce and the sweeteners dissolved more easily.
  • Store in the fridge. This is a great make-ahead recipe. Nothing in it spoils easily so you can make a big batch and store in the fridge for several weeks. Because its a bit acidic, I recommend storing it in glass jars.
  • How simple is that?

    Storing Your Keto Bbq Sauce

So, this recipe will make 14servings of BBQ sauce – each serving is 2 tablespoons. And my favorite part about this recipe is doubling or tripling it, so I have some for the entire week!

And, honestly, it gets better as the days go on because when it is sitting, it gives all the flavors a chance to continue blending together, creating an even tastier sauce.

With that said, you can store your leftover sauce in the refrigerator in an airtight container – or resealable glass jar – for up to 2 weeks!

And trust me, there is nothing better than having this sugar free BBQ sauce sitting in your fridge ready to be used.

How To Thicken Keto Bbq Sauce

Step 3: Bring to a slow boil, then simmer on medium heat. The sauce will begin to reduce and thicken. All the flavors infuse together, making it incredibly bold and tangy. With only one net carb per serving, youll want to keep a batch of this sugar-free bbq sauce recipe handy in the refrigerator. You could add xanthan gum to thicken it more quickly, but it is unnecessary, and boiling it down makes it more flavorful.

How Do I Apply And Use A Mop Sauce When I Bbq

Keto Sugar Free BBQ Sauce recipe

First and foremost, dont put a cold mop sauce to smoking meats. It will not adhere well and can cool the meat as well. Apply the mop sauce with a mop brush, thin it out with some water, stock, or more apple cider vinegar and use a spray bottle for misting too. Mop the smoked meat lightly when needed throughout the cook as needed.

If you prefer a mop style sauce as a dipping sauce as well, it will still work great! Brush it over the meat and allow it to set for a few minutes over the heat. I also love to pair it with grilled crispy chicken wing quarters or just good old fashioned chicken wings.

Is Regular Barbecue Sauce Sugar Free

Sweet and Tangy Keto BBQ Sauce – Low Carb – No Added Sugar

No! Buying condiments in the supermarket and staying sugar free is a tricky business. Ready-made sauces are usually laden with added sugar, as well as large amounts of additives straight out of the chemistry textbook.

Sugar acts as a preservative. It extends the shelf life of products. It is cheap. It enhances taste. People love sugar because it triggers the release of dopamine in the reward centre of the brain. Eating sugar makes us want to eat more sugar.

All of this is GREAT for business – and bad for our health.

I don’t want to bang on about how evil food manufacturers are. They’re in it for the profit, not for charity. What we can do is read labels and make informed decisions about what we put into our bodies.

4 grams of sugar is equivalent to 1 teaspoon of table sugar. When you read that 100g of Heinz Sweet and Spicy Barbecue Sauce contains 34g of sugar, for example, you know what you’re in for.
