In a large pot, combine Campbells® Cream of Mushroom Soup,Swanson®50% Less Beef Broth,sour cream, Worcestershire, mustard, nutmeg and black pepper.
Whisk in the Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce and flour. Cook, stirring constantly for about 2-3 minutes. Whisk in the cream of mushroom soup, milk, sour cream, salt and pepper. Lower the heat to a simmer and cook for a few minutes, stirring often.

My mother who is Swedish hates when I make this quick dish but all the girls at work love it and always ask me to make it. I don’t tell them how quick it is. Sometimes I do make my own meatballs and then throw them into the crock pot for this very quick and delicious dish.

Frozen Meatballs – Yes you could of course make your own but that kind of defeats the whole purpose of this recipe being easy. I have to put a shoutout to the best frozen meatballs ever here and those are the Costco ones. They sell a giant bag of Italian style meatballs that are so delicious. The membership alone is worth it just for those meatballs. Or just pick up a bag from the grocery store. Any kind of frozen meatball works here Italian style, homestyle, etc.
Beef Broth – I have tested the recipe with full salt beef broth and it was too much salt when combined with the condensed soup and gravy packet. Use the 50% reduced sodium beef broth. But of course, as always, use regular beef broth if that’s what you prefer.
Cream of Mushroom Soup – I don’t even like mushrooms but I love this ingredient in these meatballs. The whole point of Swedish meatballs is that creamy gravy sauce and the cream of mushroom soup adds creaminess and rich flavor with the mushrooms.
Brown Gravy Packet – Adds tons of flavor with just one packet.

Garlic Powder
Evaporated Milk – I wanted to add some type of creamy element. Sour cream is the usual ingredient in a Swedish meatballs recipe but I find that it makes the sauce chunky with bits of sour cream instead of smooth. The evaporated makes the sauce so smooth and creamy.

How Do You Make Gravy For Swedish Meatballs
Instructions In a medium sized bowl combine ground beef,panko,parsley,allspice,nutmeg,onion,garlic powder,pepper,salt and egg. Roll into 12 large meatballs or 20 small meatballs. Add 4 Tablespoons butter and flour to skillet and whisk until it turns brown. Add the meatballs back to the skillet and simmer for another 12 minutes.

Homemade Vs Frozen Meatballs
Another things that you can obviously make homemade are the meatballs. But again, very time consuming. And you can buy ones that are frozen that taste great. I have learned there are a lot of bad frozen meatballs. My go-to brand is Sams Choice.
You can of course absolutely make your own and I have a go-to recipe if you want to take time to do that. Get my meatball recipe here. Just keep in mind to use a blend of pork and beef, and instead of Italian spices, use allspice and nutmeg for that true Swedish meatball flavor and texture.
How This Recipe Came About
So, I should begin by stating that this is very close to the traditional dish that you would order off a menu in Sweden. Yes, I am for real.
Traditional Swedish meatballs are almost always a combination of meats, mainly beef and pork, and are served up in a delicious creamy gravy. The gravy, or sauce, is kind of like something between brown gravy and that which youd find in the American South, a creamy white gravy.
Swedish meatballs in sauce are also commonly served with a side of lingonberry jam, a condiment that tastes an awful lot like cranberry sauce.

My grandmother was actually from Sweden, so I have a great basis for her own Swedish Meatball Recipe, and I remember fondly sitting in her kitchen eating them. Today, I swapped out her homemade meatballs and made a copycat version using frozen meatballs. Easy and delicious. But if you want a great homemade Swedish meatball, feel free to replace them.

Can I Add Fresh Mushrooms
I though youd never ask. I also love mushrooms. Especially in Swedish meatballs! We are using cream of mushroom soup as a base but you can add extra fresh copped mushrooms too if youd like.
I feel bad for people who havent discovered their love for them but sadly, its true. There are people who dont enjoy them so you can leave them out completely if you must. The sauce still has a lot of flavor without them.
If you think you can get away with it though, try chopping them up really tiny and adding them in. Most people that dont like mushrooms, are weirded out by the texture. So if theyre tiny, sometimes you can slip them in. I wont say anything if you dont. ?

What To Serve With Swedish Meatballs
Once the meatballs are done baking, I like to pour my gravy mixture into a crockpot and then let the meatballs simmer for a few hours in the sauce. If you are in a hurry, you can serve immediately too. I serve over noodles with rolls and salad for my family and everyone loves it. You can also make some roasted veggies to serve with Swedish Meatballs, as well.

My husband is of Norse heritage – a Danish father, and Swedish mother. When they were still among us, his mom would make a buffet of all the classic stuff-Swedish Meatballs,Swedish Potato Sausage, “Brunabuner”rice pudding with lingenberries,limpa bread caraway cheese…on and on,for Christmas Eve dinner.
